@@TheRealTanSeeker my girlfriend still has one, we went away a few months ago on a trip and I really wanted to take the ND but she wasn't sure we would fit enough luggage. I drove the Z a lot, and other than passing power, I found myself wishing we took the ND instead, especially when we got to some twisty country roads. I told her that the next trip we go on we are taking the mx5. I reckon we would have had enough room in the back for a week away if we were creative with packing.

@@Jake-im2lv thanks for sharing. I had a 370Z and I miss the power but I also know I get the most fun from low-speed chuckability rather than power. Have any of you driven a first gen 86 or BRZ? I have been looking at them but am worried the power will be unsatisfying. Not just the power figure, they are a bit notorious for having an dead spot in their torque-curve too. I've always been curious about the ND as well, although they are quite rare & overpriced in my area, its unlikely I'll buy one, at least not this time around

From a prospective of a glider pilot (being flown over 7 hrs and over 1000 km in a tiny cabin), mx-5 ND is spacious and luxuriously comfortable. Driving long distances in the Miata is not a problem but a pleasure, tranquillising, simply puts a smile on one's face. A happy owner of an ND.

I drove my first Miata in 2022. It was new and it was mine. This is how it happened. My wife bought a Mazda CX-5. When I dropped her off at the dealership, I passed by the new MX-5 they had on the showroom floor. I had never seen one or at least noticed one before. I briefly sat in it, then went on my way. Back home, my 60's MGB-GT was due for a new engine. Given the choice between replacing the MG's engine or a brand-new car with a similar driveline, I chose the latter. I went back to the dealer and bought the same MX-5 that I previously sat in. My first impressions: It's not slow! How could anyone say a car that can traverse the quarter mile in the mid fourteens is slow? It carves through the corners on mountain roads. It stops fast. It feels light... and its tight inside. The ND's sound and navigation systems are good. The gearbox is crisp and direct, as is all the other driver inputs. One last thing... it gets gas mileage that's comparable to a motorcycle.

This is my "real world" dream car. I particularly like the RF. If anyone would like to swap one for a wife, I'm keen to negotiate. She's a '70 model that hasn't done much hard work. Still in good condition for the age but has a discernible whine which I haven't been able to diagnose or repair but it's been like this since new, so shouldn't be a problem. Starts up easily, and will go all day long. Runs on premium or E 100. Slight problem with her shifting gears unexpectedly, but I'm sure that this is a software issue that could be easily resolved with medication. Cannot engage reverse, but I believe that this is a common problem with this model. Changes direction with virtually no input at all. Handbrake functions perfectly. Thermostat needs replacing as she runs hot and cold. Ideal for an enthusiast or masochist.

The Miata is like Goldilocks' bed. It's not too much, it's not too little, it's just right. A beginner can drive it, an intermediate can drive it, and an absolute beast of a driver can drive it. All while having fun. Sometimes horsepower and speed ISN'T the answer. Sometimes it's the quick curves in the mountains that put someone into their calm but achieving "Zen" mode that matters. THAT is the Miata. The Miata lets you get in your personal mental "zone" and stay there, no matter your level of driving skill.

After 23 years of owning MX-5's (20 years in an NA and three years in our ND2), I have to say that your commentary was spot on. We had a BMW Z4 for six years between our two MX-5, and I have to say that the ND2 combines the fun and tossability of the NA with the power and creature comforts of the Z4. Rather the best of two worlds.

Where I'm different from most drivers, I would take a hard top--and seldom if ever drive it with the top down. Conversation--what conversation with the top down? Music? What music with the top down? Wonderful spring scent in the air?--but most of the time you will be breathing in exhaust from autos and commercial rigs. Security? What security with any soft top--they cut there way in. On and on, and on and on, I'll take a hard top every time.

I've never driven an ND (would absolutely love to!) but I did own a 1989 1.6L original mx-5 maybe 10+ years ago, and it was without question one of the most cherished cars I've owned. By the time I sold the car it was a bit over 20 years old and had just over 170,000km on the clock, so there were a few issues that had come up. The paint was faded on some of the plastic parts (bumpers, mirrors, etc), the zipper on the rear window (plastic on the NA6 model) was starting to get sticky, the plastic window itself was starting to get fuzzy and hard to see through. These are all ultimately pretty small things, but I was a uni student at the time working 2-3 days a week, so even a $600 or $700 repair would have been a struggle for me to save money for. I really loved that car though for so many reasons. Firstly, life is just very different when you're driving roofless. You hear everything, smell everything - you reallly feel so much more connected to the world around you - vs most cars where while driving you just feel like you're in yoru own little bubble. Secondly, even if the car wasn't quick, it was so much fun. You the fact that you could floor it and rev it out to redline every time wihtout actually going over the speed limit was a hoot, and you could put your foot down around corners and let the rear end come out a little without any real threat of the car spinning or losing contol - communciation through the car was amazing so you immediately felt when it was breaking traction and could make an adjustment isntantly. And it was just so controllable at the limit. The steeering was great , the gearshift was great, because of the light weight the braking was great. Thirdly, maintence. Minimal electrical systems so there wasnt all that much that could go wrong. Brakes were small so they were cheap to replace. Tyres were modest sized so they were cheap to replace. It never used more then about 8L/100km no matter how hard I drove it. Ever since I sold the car 10+ years ago I've never stopped toying with the idea of buying another one, I really did love it that much. The only other car that left as much of an impression on my was my Alfa 147 GTA. I've put on some weight now so fitting inside an mx5 isnt as easy as it once was...but as a pure weekend i may still consider an ND. Honestly I think I would even be fine with a 1.5L model, becuase with these cars its never been about speed, and even that little rev happy 1.5 is still singificantly quicker then my NA6 model was (and that was quick enough be fun).

I had a 2020 MX-5 Club as a fun weekend car for two years. Really loved it, but I decided to sell it to get a new experience. Bought a 2022 Camaro 2SS 1LE, which is also a great car. So glad I got to have a V8 (with a manual) before they disappear, but as mentioned in this video, I find the car way more capable than I can use most of the time. Where I live, there are mostly tight back roads where I don't get a chance to let the Camaro stretch her legs. The MX-5, by comparison, was something I could really enjoy at any speed, and was a lot better suited to the back roads around where I live. I'm seriously considering putting in trading out of the Camaro next spring (car will be put away in the winter so only a few more months of driving) and getting back into another MX-5 just because it was more fun, more of the time.

I've put at least 80k miles on each, except the '23, the 4th MX-5, it was totaled in a collision. I've since bought another '23, same Platinum w/Terracotta Napa Leather seats. Presently, I've got about 3,200 miles on it. Not a moment's trouble out of the 4 previous MX-5's. I use Mobil One synthetic oil, and have it changed every 6K miles and the transmission oil changed at 60K miles. I am not a practical man, never was. I started sportscar life back in 1964 with a new MGB, then another new 1966 MGB. Fun is driving through the Appalachian Mountains, but don't try it in the winter. By the way; Good review.

Great video. I live in the uk and I bought a NC kendo model (retractable hard top) in 2011. Brand new. It’s done 40k miles and touch wood never missed a beat. Hardly cost me a penny. Bad things. It could be faster and after a long journey it’s not the most comfortable. But it’s a lovely looking car. The ND is nicer. And it’s just great fun to drive. Totally different car with the top down. At some point I will be in the market for a new (to me) car and a 12 month old ND will be on the shortlist.

I have a 2022 GT similar to the model tested and it is a joyful car. As they say a quick car, not necessarily a fast car. It is so much fun, and practical enough for road trips with small bags or soft luggage. Interestingly the car in the video has black badging as opposed to the standard chrome badges...also a non-standard aerial -great review!

Another known problem with the Mx5 ND, is that when the windscreen is replaced, the clips for the windscreen trim panels break, which if not fixed correctly, means that whilst driving the panels around the windscreen can fly off… so definitely something to look out for when you’re getting a windscreen replaced (speaking from experience)

Now on the performance front. These are quite a bit quicker than an 86 (1st Gen). They’re not much slower than a Golf GTI, couple of tenths in actual tests. Not only that, it is way better, more tractable performance. Launch a GTI and you get dud-dud-dud-dud with the terrible traction control. These things you can launch perfectly every time. Between the light weight and the factory LSD they just rocket away. They are PLENTY quick and WAY more rewarding. They also sacrifice stupid and pointless 0-100 figures by having close, short gearing. Which is way more beneficial in the real world and you can take better advantage of the relatively low power it has. Around bends etc the MX5 leaves a Golf for dead. It’s not even a comparison. It’s like comparing a Windows 7 gaming computer to an iPhone.

Alright, last comment on the MX5. It’s a truly special car, but I couldn’t live with it. The closest thing I’ve come to a practical and comfortable version of it is the BMW 130i. Road tests and performance figures can’t explain the small nuances of these cars. It’s a shame the 125i and 130i were overshadowed by the 135i by all the pointless 0-100 times and reviews etc. the 125i and moreso 130i were fantastic purists cars that have a lot in common with the little Mazda. They’re revvier, in the case of the 130i have shorter gearing and fun factor cranked up. But because there’s always the ‘faster’ version these get forgotten. Much like the 1.5 in the MX5. That was designed to be the purist version. It had an engine that way far more designed and tuned for the MX5 and quite a bit less weight. Actually that was the key to being less heavy than than NC, the 2.0 being actually pretty close to the NC which was also 2lt. The original ND 2.0 was a bit lazy and not the most exciting engine. The 1.5 was revvy and fizzy and for the spirit of the car is actually the better choice. The 2.0 was much improved in the later update, but the 1.5 is almost completely forgotten about OR thought of as just the cheap entry point for people who want an MX5 but don’t really care about performance. The 130i is an absolute hoot for someone who wants an MX5-like car but needs something more practical. Sure a Golf with a DSG is probably going to be faster, but the unquantifiable aspect that makes these things amazing simply can’t be conveyed on paper or a video.
@Inspherespace
@Inspherespace Жыл бұрын
Spot on, but you do need to do some mods to the 130i to make it handle like it should but you are right, 0-100km times don't mean much, straight line speed/acceleration gets boring quickly and, unless you're a pro driver you won't have the skills or gonads to exploit a high powered car on the road or track for that matter, corners are where the fun is at and being able to exploit the cars potential without having to always be in a HPDE or needing the computers/nannies to compensate for your lack of skill..

MX-5s are much cheaper now than they used to be in Australia when bought new. The Roadster is cheaper in nominal terms now (2024) than it was in 2010 let alone in real terms (adjusted for inflation). That is incredible for a car like this that is actually made in Japan and not China or Thailand etc. Mazda seem to be the one car maker that has resisted enshittification and still offers good vehicles at a relatively sensible price.

I can only agree with virtually all of your points. I own a 2016 Recaro Sport - which I have owned since Aug 2018 - since then it's been my only car, used daily for commute, fun, holidays etc etc and I am not changing it any time soon. They are brilliant cars, not the fastest but FUN FUN FUN even on the daily commute to work,it's the only car I've ever takemn for a drive 'just because'. In the 5 years I've had the car I've had No reliablity issues/breakdowns, and the only real slighgt annoyances are the bloodhy cup holders, they are rubbish, and the infotainment can be quite slow to boot up. Apart from that a great little car that is pratical enough - for me- to use daily. Oh and roof down, I'm in the UK and even in winter the roof is down if it's over 6 degrees C and not raining :-). BUY ONE you won't regret it.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the automatic version; you dismiss it far too quickly. While test-driving the automatic recently just out of curiosity, I was completely & utterly blown away by how good it was. When in “Drive” you can pop the shift lever a titch over to the left, taking it out of full auto mode into a manual control, and then simply blip the lever forward & backward (with a tiny throw) to shift up & down. The paddle shifters are also there as another shifting option too! It was so shockingly good, I bought it over the manual! The automatic is much more relaxing during those (many) times when you want to just cruise and enjoy your coffee, or when you’re dealing with city traffic. Have you actually tried one, or just regurgitating the tired old yarn about how it has to be a manual?

If you notice my icon, yes that is an MGF. I compete in track days and hillclimbs. What do I have to beat at these meetings? A bloody MX5 or a Lotus Elise. One of the drivers of an MX5 let me drive his at Mt Cotton HIllclimb. When I got the car back to the pits (I was 2 seconds slower than the MG, but not my car) he asked what I thought of the car. My answer, I got the wrong car I should have got one of these. Great video, but now a lot of people now know what a great car they are. They are easy to drive and you can get in them and drive quickly immediately. No bad handling, very neutral with a bit of understeer. The MGF and MGTF with its mid-engine is a harder car to learn to drive quickly. They have a switch that says oversteer on or off. That switch is always on.

I have an mgf as well that I'll be selling eventually. The hydragas was shot in mine and I put on the satur coilover kit. Its still way too rough on the roads where I live even with adjustments made to try and make it softer. I do think the F sounds a lot better though with the intake and exhaust on it. I also had to do a head gasket in the first 3 months of ownership on the F lol
@murrieteacher
@murrieteacher Жыл бұрын
@@Jake-im2lv I understand about the rough ride as I had race suspension setup. The F was still a daily and I recently sold mine with (wait for it) 213,000klms on the clock to work on my faster 2002 MGTF 160. The MGF was so harsh you could pick when you went over road paint. I have had to soften the MGTF to get it to handle. That K series engine really does sound good though with a Mk7 exhaust and the inlet down by the air intake on the side of the car. I really should have bought an Elise.

@@murrieteacher yeah that's where I routed my cold air intake as well. Even cats eye reflectors on the road feel rough to go over lol. I should have got a TF with soft ride kit but didn't realise it would be that bad in the F lol. Being so light probably doesn't help with that

Had one for a while. Had wanted an MX5 for ages. Had to sell it due to simply not fitting in it. Yes, I could get surprisingly comfortable even though I’m 6’2” like AK. When I test drove it it was amazing. Sublime little cars. BUT - When you’re tall and actually live with one, that driving position is good, but you can’t actually adjust your body basically at all. Like I couldn’t get my knees up past the steering wheel and centre console. So you can’t adjust anything really. I have joint issues and that made things worse, but you’d be surprised at how annoying it actually is that you literally cannot move.
