Kei cars like these, are better engineered and built than basically any merc, bmw or audi, and in 30 years it'll still be be running. TONS of keicars in New Zealand thanks to our Liberal grey import scene. I'd buy either of them. Try and get my hands on a Mugen N-Box hehe.

I recently purchased a 2019 Spacia Gear as a “temporary car” while my century was on its way from Japan to Sydney. Within 2 days, it was obvious we were going to keep both cars. The Spacia is the happiest little car we’ve ever owned. Everyone smiles when it’s around. My family love it. It’s incredibly practical, and fun in silly ways. I used to drive a 911, and this gets 10x more attention and questions that the Porsche. My kid has named it “Bob” and my wife, who gives exactly zero shits about cars, legitimately has grown attached to it. Buy one!

I own an N-Box in Sydney; great as a daily driver around the city. There's so much room in these that I ended up importing a bed frame/kit built specifically for the N-Box from Japan and go car camping every month or so. Just a tip that if anyone should import these keis that they should always get the turbo version, the difference between an NA and a turbo variant is literally day and night.

i've driven some underpowered slow 4 cylinder cars/trucks from japan in my time but i gotta say my 2013 nbox custom wagon is faster than those. i live in japan and purchased my nbox with 70,000 km for 6k usd. for them? I see so many nboxes on the japan mainland but here in okinawa they're less common. One thing i notice with kei cars here is that they like to flip over in crashes. we have roads that are paved with coral mixed into the road tar and when it rains it gets quite slppery and i see a lot of accients

@@YoureNowOnTV The frame I got was from MGR Customs in Japan; they make bed kits/frames for quite a few cars (not limited to keis). The good thing is the entire thing can be assembled in 10-15minutes, and requires no drilling or taking apart anything. Its very sturdy and fits perfectly around the interior edges, and comes with padding protection for the foot of the frame so it won't damage the car interior. The only down side is that importing the thing is quite expensive as its bulky and has a bit of weight to it (frame is all metal and boards are thick)

I just came back from Japan after a 4 week vacation. The first thing I noticed when I got back here to Tasmania was all the huge cars on our roads. Why? Kei cars nail it ! We need to put pressure on Honda and Suzuki to import these so people can get off the SUV band wagon. SUV's your time is up, Kei cars, welcome to Australia!. I sat in the back of two Kei cars and the experience was awesome. I was smiling so much and laughing that my Japanese friends thought I was loopy. Again, Suzuki and Honda (And Subaru and all the other Kei car manufacutrers) BRING THESE TO AUSTRALIA !!!! PLEASE !!!!

I bought a 2019 Spacia hybrid AWD with just under 30,000ks on it a few weeks ago and have done almost 2000kms in it in that time. I'm constantly surprised at just how good it is. It's my daily. It has replaced a large 4 door sedan and a Suzuki Carry van and does as good or better than both. I've taken it from Sydney to Gerringong NSW a couple of times and it went up steep Mount Ousley at the 80kph limit on cruise control without even trying. My only gripes are the cruise control can only be bumped up to 107kph at most which can be fun on the 110kph freeway in the mornings, and it does move around a bit in crosswinds being a tall lightweight box. Other than that it's actually a blast to drive and the power button actually works. I love the way it looks, the way it drives, I just love it! 10/10 would buy again.

We used to have Kei cars in Australia. They sadly usually got panned by idiot journalists who couldn’t see the practicality and joy in them. They were ridiculously misunderstood. Had a few Mira TRXX builds and absolutely loved them. Some of the best vehicles I’ve ever experienced. Currently, only the Ignis and Jimny are close relatives to fully imported Kei cars here. Both are wider body than the actual Kei versions and have 1.2 and 1.5 NA engines respectively. Kei cars have always been a bit bonkers and I’m all for us fully embracing them! "Journalists" covering the auto industry, if they work for outlets that rely on auto manufacturer advertising, are compromised. There's more money usually to be made in more expensive models. Banging the drum for vehicles not sold in the market or at the low end of the market doesn't make the automakers all that happy. Even if they sell that kind of vehicle. In the US, many auto "Journalists" don't even own cars. They get loaners from the makers. They will continue to get loaners from the makers as long as they keep the makers happy. Also, toss in model reveals. Many times at nice places with nice accommodations for a few days. With good food.

I actually sort of own that. I have an Opel Agila which is just a Suzuki Wagon R+ that Opel licensed and changed basically just front grill and engine. And that Suzuki Wagon R+ I hear is based on some Kei car. It is a little bit wider and longer and has 1.0 or 1.2l engine. Mine is the 1.2 and it is a tiny rocket that takes all the stresses of narrow roads with incompetent SUV drivers on them or parking in a city and turns it into fun. I can't even cound how many times I had a bigger car behind me slam on the brakes because I comfortably went at speed through a gap they didn't want to risk or how many times several cars in front of me pass up on a possible parking spot as being too tight and I just drive into it nose first. My car is 22 years old and I have no idea what to replace it with when I eventually have to. There are no left-hand-drive Kei cars for us in Europe.

Having been the proud owner of a Suzuki Alto 1.0 and a Honda Brio 1.2 sedan, i must say they are both FANTASTIC cars. Neither gave me a single day's problems in the 100k odd kms ive driven each. So i know the reliability of each brand. And with the south african fuel price now at ZAR26 per litre, these Kei cars would simply be awesome.

G'Day Adam, I'd like to personally thank you for this review as it helped me make the leap to buy one beautiful Suzuki Spacia Custom XS. I've only had it a few days but I'm already head over heels for it, the practicality, headspace, versatility and fuel savings are astronomical, Insurance is cheap, Tires are cheap, Brakes are probably cheap (haven't looked into that yet) and the hybrid which I have holds 100 up the hills between central coast and sydney! I appreciate you and what you do!

The "Kei car" was made to unique standards to be able to navigate Japan's narrow roads and serve as the nation's means of transport. The width, length, and height of the car are all set, and the engine displacement is set at 660cc... and the "tax" is low so that the car can be used as the nation's means of transport. There are family cars, trucks for carrying luggage, and even two-seater convertibles. What if there was a "HONDA S660"? Try taking one for a ride. ...From Japan

A few years ago I visited the Suzuki Plaza in Hamamatsu, Japan. They had a Suzuki Spacia as a show model where you could actually sit in and even though I'm 1,9m tall, there was indeed room to spare for both my legs and head. I also really liked those electrically operated passenger sliding doors and the cargo space with the rear seats down was truly impressive. I'm really tempted to import one of those, but since I live in the Netherlands where we drive on the right, preparing it to pass MOT might require some work as the direction of the headlight beam needs to be adjusted.

This was a bloody awesome 20 minute video. I smiled along with the presenter! This sort of car is all I ever need. Currently I run a 2011 Ford Fiesta Diesel and we cut 250.000km so far, and I love it. If only Suzuki or Honda would start selling these regularly overseas, I would jump on it in no time. I have been looking at the Suziki Ignis and that is probably what I will go for. It is mainly my doggy mover - got two dog girls - and occasional road trip to see my folks, which is about 650km one way. At 57 years now, the next car will be my last probably. The EU regulators can stick their ridiculously overpriced and over sized E-Cars where the sun never shines. I want a fun and practical little petrol runner - with air con - can’t live without it no more 😂 Thanks for the video. The big grinning your face and the enthusiasm made my day! I still have no idea why the Japanese manufacturers don't import Kei vehicles into the UK officially. Our cramped congested roads and sky-high insurance costs are basically the ideal market for these cars to eat up the small car segment with their great feature for price ratio and heaps of character, versatility and variety. It's the same story with the big vans. Alphards and Elgrands are really popular here with large families and as private taxis. They're really missing a beat by not just converting the speedo to read in MPH, adding 5-10% to their reasonable prices and then shipping them here and having them in dealerships. Even past that, manufacturers with bases here could just make these cars locally and skip the cost/exchange rate nonsense.

Suzuki Hustler owner in Japan. Same engine as the Spacia (also the Caterham uses the same turbo 660cc) it will too comfortably cruise at 140kph, speed limits on highways is somewhere between 80-100kph, the 4wd turbo will do 5l per 100km when driven on the highway and maybe 6 around town. The luxury features are basically Mercedes S-class from the 1980s 90s (?) as this segment is incredibly competitive. Mine has all the toys for it's model year - cruise control, descent control, slippy start, hill hold, 360 camera, ABS, ESC, stop start hybrid, etcetera - just too much to mention - bought with 3km on the tachometer as "used" for about JPY1300000 (AUD 13,500) The only issue you might find is that the gear lever surround can impinge on your knee depending on your shape.

I would absolutely buy either one of these. I've had a fascination with Kei cars since I was like 13 years old and read an article about them in Automobile Magazine (or Road and Track, I forget) that featured a photo of a Pajero Mini next to a full-sized Chevy Blazer, making it look laughably tiny. I envy you in Australia for being able to import these pretty much brand new because we have to wait 25 years to legally run one in the US. But that doesn't mean I haven't been perusing local classified ads for a Pajero Mini or Sambar van just for funsies. :) Oh and BTW I absolutely guffawed at Kevin Spacia.

For example, said importer currently has listed a 3 year old hybrid Jazz (Fit) for $40,000! It may be that that dealer is only making a modest mark up due to associated import costs, or are the margins maybe less modest? Would be great to hear you guys explain, as you do outstanding research for all your videos.

Hi there! Our cars may seem pricier, but that's because we invest in high-quality vehicles from the start, rather than buying and refurbishing cheaper higher mileage, or damaged ones. We also offer a 3-year/60,000km warranty and fixed-price servicing. This includes the risk of importing and guaranteeing the cars, so we need a margin to cover our costs and wages. If you prefer a more economical option through import brokering, we can assist with that too, finding a car within your budget. However, please note that despite our best efforts, you'll bear the risk if any issues arise after it arrives, and the process takes about 3-4 months from purchase to hitting the road. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!

As Re Driven do such excellent reporting using research and fact based information, I would really appreciate their input on this. As for me the prices seem too high to justify, but I'm also prepared to be proven wrong. Your stock is all immaculately presented, and well photographed, it's a credit to the team there at GG. @@MrWilliam.Stewart thank you for your well wishes! We decided to have a dedicated showroom and cars in stock because we're bringing in new cars that haven't been in Australia before. This gives people a chance to test drive and see them in person, which can be important for those new to buying grey imports. It also saves time compared to the 3-4 month wait for imports. Financing is easier too since the cars are already at a dealership. Many people also love the physical aspect of checking out the cars in person, haggling on the price, and getting that firm handshake of a good purchase! Running a dealership is costly, and buying good cars is even pricier. That's why our floor stock is usually more expensive than imports. However, some customers who used our import process later felt they should have just bought from our stock. By the time an imported car goes through all the steps, the price difference is often smaller than expected, considering all the extra hassle. If you would like to know more about the import dealership industry or just about us in general, feel free to send us an email at info@go-garage.com.au!
