The reason why this scene still strikes me as one of the most thrilling and moving scenes I have ever seen in a film (even after 30 years) is not at all the politics of the October Revolution, but the fact that one has the sense of the excitement of actually being a participant in a major historical event, even as one's own life path and one's own close relationships are being transformed. This is brilliant film making.

Just noticed your comment on this Saturday night perusing music and stuff. This scene still moves me too after all these years. I'm a lifelong socialist, a republican socialist and a dedicated student of Marxism. I experienced the struggle for freedom in my country, Ireland, against British imperialism, and like many others I paid a price, but I was always inspired and guided by my core beliefs. The Internationale forever.

@Bombastic Very nice to hear from you in America. I always wanted to go there and see that country, but I can never do that now because I wouldn't be allowed enter. People like myself are automatically barred from entering the US and Canada, you know what I mean, the legacy of the northern conflict and legal matters. But I often thought in the spirit of that great October event, I could go to Mexico instead, pay homage to the San Patricio Battalion and then take my chances running across the Rio Grande, or maybe climb over that damn wall, or whatever. Well, not really but it's a nice thought though. I wish you well.
@mikki35623 жыл бұрын
@Bombastic Yes I think I know what you mean, things have changed in the past couple of decades. People here in Ireland are surprised at how little is paid in the US to those who are unemployed due to the pandemic. I hear it is a once off payment of fourteen hundred dollars, whereas here in Ireland everyone affected in that way are paid 350 euros a week, which is a little over 1684 dollars per month. Then most people qualify for free healthcare also, or subsidised private healthcare because there are no charges for hospitalisation. But don't get me wrong, there are still a lot of inequalities and issues, and anger. Let's hope we live to see the mighty US working class rise again and remove those responsible for creating the vast gulf of inequality in the US and the world.

The Leftist elite in Hollywood played _the Internationale_ 24/7 anyway. (many still do) They never needed to wait til the academy awards to do it. It was their great love and raison d'être. The only thing they would've absolutely never done is abandon their massively entitled lives and actually go live in Russia. Much easier to keep their precious hands clean and love it from their nice comfy chateaux in the hills above LA.

An inspiring and moving moment from one of my favourite films. The ideas expressed in the song have been around a very long time , and always will be, as long as one man is exploited by another. The Soviet Union failed for many reasons, but the events portrayed in the film show that we can win and learn from the experience of the first attempt of common people to rule and govern themselves.

Don't just wait for the revolution to come, it doesn't happen on its own. The people cause a revolution. Educate people, de-program the fascists and conservatives by debate, help those in need. The Western population is lead to belive this is the only alternative, unbridled, corrupt and immoral capitalism. Tell them there is another way, and show to other the better way by helping others. Kinda like the black panthers. Educate the uneducated, women, children and men, set up pantries to feed the hungry. You grow a movement via compassion, not only words. Stay strong comrades!

A great film, attempting to identify and to illustrate, like the French Revolution, the birth of a new idea that would benefit ordinary people, the masses. Rather over-passionate in places - but so is the continued capitalist pursuit of money, wealth and profit, which many people support, though they themselves will never be rich enough to become capitalists. Whatever the Soviet Union ultimately became, its birth was colossally important, its results stupendous and, like the French Revolution it gave a new impetus to the lives, the aspirations of working people, and how they viewed themselves under the heel of the money-men, the Tsarist autocrats, and the burden of serfdom. Those heels still exist, and they are no less oppressive to working people of all countries. Perhaps even more oppressive now, with a corrupt, evil self-serving banking system, than it was then. Long Live Socialism!

It was never communist. It was and still is socialist. Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. President Xi is upholding Marxism. Communism has never been achieved because it requires a socialist period. Socialism first, then communism. If you read and understand Marx's view of historical materialism you will understand. China never achieved bourgeois capitalism; the Western colonial powers prevented China from doing so. It was artificially held back into feudalism between warlords. Today, China has elements of capitalism because it never achieved capitalism. Capitalism, markets under control of the Communist Party allows China to advance through a "capitalist" period without the chaotic and exploitative effects.

The street scenes in this clip were all filmed in Helsinki, in the main square (Senaatintori) right by the government house and very close to the harbor.

Everybody here NEEDS to read the journal/autobiography that Warren Beatty based this film on: _10 Days That Shook The World!_ by John “Jack” Reed (the character Beatty plays in this film), and one of only 3 Americans given funeral rites and laid to rest at the Kremlin Wall. He was a journalist and a revolutionary, who happened to be the only American present in Russia when Lenin arrived at Finland Station and the Revolution kicked off. He ended up eventually participating in the Revolution himself, after Trotsky wrote him since kind of official pass giving him permission. After the Bolsheviki victory, he immediately raced back home to write in the briskets about what he’d just witnessed and experienced in Petrograd, before racing back to Russia to represent the US at the very first meetings of what would eventually become The 3rd International. Anyway, it’s a fascinating and exciting book, and since the film is largely based on it, I highly recommend it.
