REDS The Official History of The Cincinnati Reds | 1987 | MLB | Full
Reds is a complete visual history of the Cincinnati Reds from the 1800's to the present. It follows the club from its days as baseball's first professional team through the great teams of 1919, 1939, 1940, 1961 and, of course, the Big Red Machine of the 70's. From George Wright to Edd Rousin, from Ernie Lombardi to Ted Kluszewski, from Pete Rose through today's stars, they're all in Reds, the official authorized history of baseball oldest team.

Brian Downs here; I have discovered through more research that the family story of the Red Stockings being " born " at John Soetje's cigar shop is a bit nebulous. Matthew Yorston , a druggist, in the early 1860's, started what is considered to be as the first organized baseball team in Cincinnati ( the Live Oaks, or perhaps at first the Buckeyes). It appears that he did this prior to Mr. Soetje's arrival on the scene, but the two either shared the same building at Chestnut and Central Avenues ( Yorston having a drug store for a very long time ), of the were next door neighbors. I believe it was the same building- a very old building even in the 1860's. Mr. Yorston and the Live Oaks are never mentioned directly with the Red Stockings (who arrived on that scene a couple years later). I see no mention , that is, that the Live Oaks morphed into the Red Stockings over a few years time.Yorston never played for the Red Stockings and is never associated with them. In fact the Red Stockings played the Live Oaks at least once. Folks tend to embellish and not have the hard facts, and my great-grandfather saying that the Reds were born in " this building " ( his cigar shop ) is not correct, but the fact that the Live Oaks most likely were started there is still significant. I have read that the meeting to form the Red Stockins as the first paid team happened at a specifical address in a Mr. Tilden's law office ( he played for them too). Some of the better Live Oaks players jumped ship to the Red Stockings , so the connection is there if not muddy. It is still a very cool story with some proof here and there, especially for my family. I didn't intend to fabricate anything- I just researched it more and will continue to do so. BDD 3-11-2018

Wow, this was pretty damn good, and doesn't flinch away from talking about the lean epochs. Then it closes right on the cusp of Rose's downfall, glad this documentary didn't have to deal with it, ending on a happy note. Then the other figure at the end, Schott... yikes, if they only knew then what we know now. However, I would have loved to have seen Browning's perfect game, and the 1990 championship team, with Pinella at the helm and those three ridiculously effective relievers, Charlton, Myers and Dibble.

The meeting in which the Cincinnati Reds ( not the exact name in 1869 ) were formed as the first paid team was held at my great-grandfather's cigar shop in downtown Cincinnati, in 1869. John Soetje was his name. I have documentation and the entire story, but a gentleman from New York brought the game, in effect, to Cincinnati and evidently taught the game to folks there. He was a pharmacist, and rented a back room in John Soetje's cigar shop. Local baseball people met there and formed the Reds as the first professional baseball team.

Brian Downs here; I have, through more research, found that my story is more an exaggeration than fact. The Red Stockings were actually formed at a lawyer's office at 17 and a half 3rd Street. This is documented in a book ( " Baseball in Cincinnati " by a man named Erardi- a son or grandson of one of the original Red Stockings players). The Soetje connection is more a matter of Matthew Yorston, a long time druggist , bringing the game to Cincinnati and teaching it to others. He formed, in the early 1860's , what is considered the first organized baseball team to Cincinnati ( not " Town Ball " ) called the Live Oaks. He evidently shared the same building on Central Avenue with John Soetje, ( that is verified by ancient Cincinnati Business directory addresses ),but the Live Oaks actually played the Red Stockings and were rivals. In fact, the Live Oaks were a team prior to John Sotje's arrival on the scene. Mr. Yorston is very detialed book reference above and the fact that Yorston is not connected to the Red Stockings leaves my family story a bit dicey ir not totally untrue. It is still a neat story for us, however.

Why, John Morris? The fact is that, yes, Cincy was the first place where a fully pro team was fielded. But..also the fact is that MLB NATIONAL MUSEUM historians only claim the N.A.PBP( the first N.A.), AND THE N.L., PLAYERS LEAGUE, AMER. ASSN., A.L., and FED. LEAGUE as the only full MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL BASEBALL loops. The league the Red Stockings were in 1869 was not a MAJOR LEAGUE, neither were the Red Stockings. As a matter of fact, after a suspension of one season in 1870 that team moved to BOSTON in 1871, eventually becoming the BRAVES..now in Atlanta. So, MLB owes a historical tip of the hat to Cincy for creating fully pro teams, but owes no favor to the REDS for beginning MLB, and MLB was corrected by the MUSEUM for the MLB 100 TH. YEAR MLB(FACELESS KILLEBREW BATTING SILHOUETTE) CELEBRATORY PATCH IN 1969, that should have celebrated ONLY- PRO BASEBALL's 100th, NOT MLB's. By the way, isn't it enough that you get to open EVERY SEASON AT HOME? No one else gets to do that..sheesh.
@robertsprouse9282
@robertsprouse9282 5 жыл бұрын
@Jim McCracken, good for them. It still does not answer my question. I will give you the "first in above the table, full squad pro baseball city" tag. But, its the Braves(1869 as a pro team out of CINCY) that are considered the oldest MLB team with the CUBS one year younger(1870 established in the old NABBPL, shutting down 1871-73, because of the renowned CHICAGO FIRE, re- joining the NEW LEAGUE THE NAPBB in 1874. Not only that, but MLB is running around now with 150 year MLB patches on their sleeves, when its a fact that MajorLB did not start until 1903 when the A.L. and N.L. decided to stop stealing each other's players and came to a legal agreement(in 2000. the formal league organizations were dissolved and "LEAGUE" just became a name of nostalgia, as MLB'S A.L. AND N.L. LEGALLY BECAME JUST ONE ENTITY). But, I digress. I mean MLB can retroactively go back and treat records and teams before 1903, go back to 1869 and pretend that what came before was MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, but that's only because the teams before 1961 and in the A.L.'s case before the A.L. in 1901, all started before 1900. Further, not every league that operated back then was retroactively viewed as MLB- see the PLAYERS LEAGUE 1890's, and THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BASE BALL PLAYERS league. Its true that retroactively, MLB considers the NATIONAL ASSN. OF PROFESSIONAL BASE BALL PLAYERS(N.A.. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION for short 1871-1875, not to be confused with the former name for the governing body of MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL-now called MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL LLC)Major League Baseball, only because the CHICAGO WHITE STOCKINGS also officially called CHICAGO PROFESSIONAL BASE BALL CLUB(eventually CUBS)AND THE BOSTON RED STOCKINGS(ATLANTA BRAVES)began there. And, the defunct 1880's&90's AMERICAN ASSOC. in addition to the NAT. LEAGUE OF PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL CLUBS 1876-NOW(NAT. LEAGUE OF TODAY) are considered MAJOR LEAGUE retroactively, and the AMER. LEAGUE OF PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL CLUBS(AMER. LEAGUE)in 1901&1902, is considered MLB, although, the forerunner to the A.L. the WESTERN LEAGUE IN 1899&1900 is not considered MAJOR LEAGUE. All that is true, but MLB does not consider the 1913 FEDERAL LEAGUE AS MAJOR, BUT rather as INDEPENDENT MINOR, NOR THE 1914&'15 FEDERAL LEAGUE as MAJOR despite many MLB players participating in it during those last two years(heck, WRIGLEY FIELD[the Fed. LEAGUE's Chicago Whales ballpark] came out of it). So, my point is as it was originally: first in openly full squad pro baseball, not first in MLB=Cincy. So, why should you always get the first games? Pro baseball history is not necessarily tied back into MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL regardless of what MLB says, but also because of what they say only in regards to records and nickname franchises beginning, even if not in the same city. Its what was going on at the time back then that counts.. My point has still not been refuted. To celebrate MLB history, the Braves could get the opener every year. Cincy can celebrate openly full squad, pro baseball with a parade, or in addition to the Braves all teams today that existed in 1903 can celebrate MLB with alternating honors each year for first MLB games, and that includes CINCY. Yep..

John Morris is right. Robert Sprouse is wrong. The tradition has been established over time. The Reds hosted the first game for DECADES through almost the entire 20th Century into the 21st Century. Just because the Lions were the first to do Thanksgiving games, doesn't mean that the Cowboys aren't similarly worthy. Both teams through decades and decades of hosting games on Thanksgiving Day have established a tradition. Traditions are built over years, decades, centuries. Cincinnati's rich tradition of hosting the Opener is forged via DECADES of leading the way into the season.

Unfortunately that isn't the issue. No one can deny he played hard, no one can deny his talent, or his accomplishments as a player. He was very aware that gambling would disqualify him from the HoF, and he chose to do it anyway, in clear violation of the standards set by the Commissioner of MLB. It's sad, it's unfortunate, it's even tragic. Our emotions scream "Say it ain't so, Pete". But it's not about emotion. He willingly chose to do wrong, and these are the consequences of his actions.

No he shouldn’t. His play he most definitely should have been but he’s a scumbag and did 1 of the only few things that can get your banned from Baseball and for life. Which he also signed & agreed to so he most definitely should have thought about that before being a cheating turd. Or @ least before signing The Papers. Sheesh You can believe what you want but there’s no way a scumbag that big wasn’t betting against his team. Oh btw , I own an Road Grey V-Neck Conception jersey as well as an Home White V-Neck ROSE 14 jersey. So I’m just stating facts. 1869 team had nothing to do with the history of the Cincinnati Reds. Be like trying to trace the history of the yankees through the giants to 1883. Its just 2 teams born in the same city but they had nothing to do with each other. The 1871 Boston Red Stockings have more in connection with the 1869 Red Stockings than the modern Reds do.
