I saw Ethan salas apart of the deal. If you can somehow put Yoshida in this deal and cut Bogaerts aav down in the middle part of the deal to 20m and the end down to 15, so something like 60-70m assumed by padres, and you get Salas back, that is kind of win win. You get your righty infielder with versatility, a leader, speaks multiple languages, and is headed to have his number retired. I’m kind of in. I could see his ops jumping 100 points or so coming back to Boston

Surprisingly this potential deal makes some sense provided the Padres want to eat a significant part of Xander Bogaerts' current contract ($25.45 million per year expiring after the 2033 season) ... Having San Diego pay half his contract ($12.73 million per year) over these next four seasons and then be willing to eat 75% of it ($19.09 million per year) over the remaining five years would seem more feasible to me considering Bogaerts will be 36 years old after the 2028 season ... This "upside down" contract dilemma San Diego currently is facing with Bogaerts' deal should be a "wake up" reminder to "Red Sox Nation" why you don't make a long term financial commitment to a 30 year old ballplayer who is aging past his prime ... The idea of this actually has me hyped! I wanted them to pin a C on Xander's jersey before he left, so having him back would be incredible. He's in my all-time top three as well. I am not going to get my hopes up due to the money side, but damn would it be nice to bring Xander home. Seeing he and Raffy back together..... warms my heart haha. He could totally be a huge benefit to the young guns too, and then just like you said, let him be a utility guy in the later part of his contract assuming he doesn't have a long term resurgence at Fenway. If the Padres are looking to shed salary, Breslow needs to ask about Tatis Suarez and maybe then half ofX man's salary. Sox send Yoshi Abreu Rafaela and Grissom. Sox lineup Duran Tatis Devers Xander Casas Story Wong Anthony Campbell. Sox can even ask for another SP like Cease. It would be ridiculous but it does solve a ton of holes in Boston. The issue, Sox will need to eventually make room for Mayer.... does this Move Bogey to 3B and Casas finally is traded?

If Sox paid next four years, Padres split two years and Padres picked four full years. Xander's performance went down, elimination of the shift. But it doesn't work. Not with Meyer and Campbell this year and next. Personally, looking at the opening day line up, I don't see Campbell and Anthony on the starting nine. He could fill in a 2nd base, he would be good in the clubhouse and it’s a decent deal at half contract but it’s a real gamble in terms of production. Gotta think big. We have two or more very good 2nd base prospect and a very good Right fielder (Wilyer). Trade one 2nd baseman and Wilyer for Tatis, Bogaerts and Suarez,. Sox have a lot of depth pieces in their pitching so we could work something out do that the Padres shed salary and get back the positional pieces they lose at the same time. If you can somehow package Massa in this - we are done.

How about the Padres even just eat a third of the deal? that still leaves the deal at 15.6 mil/year and as you mentioned in the later years that will look like a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the deals in the MLB. Good analysis, but I think the big issue is whether Xander is actually an "impact bat" anymore. If it's all PETCO, why hasn't that park hurt Machado or Arraez or Profar or Higashioka or Solano or Peralta? I'm not sure any amount of money justifies the possibility of a guy with a sub-700 OPS taking up a roster spot for 9 years.
