Hi there, I am a master's food science student and i was thinking of doing a thesis on beer science based on the current trend or a problem in the beer industry. Brewing Viking it would be very helpful if could pitch in some ideas that i could consider for my thesis. It would be great if i could get some suggestions from brew experts like you. Cheers!

Brewing Viking is it posiible to fine beer after fermentation with Agar? I have searched and searched but there is no real consensus on this. As a vegan gelatin is out of the question and I wondered if this would have the same effect? If you could provide an expert opinion on why it might or might not work I would be really grateful - regards Robbie.

Please see the video on fining with gelatin, and check the comment section. I don't think it will work well to fine with gelatin, due to the wrong charge. However, you are currently commenting on a video that has the two things that will work great for you as a vegan: PVPP and Silica. Another option is filtration.

Thankyou so much, I am not sure if we can get these products in the UK, I will check it out though. I stand corrected, I can get Polyclar 730, the PVPP and silica gel mix. Sound really great :D Thanks so much :D

Hi BV, sorry to hassle you again, I used Polyclar 730 yesterday, followed the directions, mixed 5g in 200 ml of freshly boiled water for about 15min , added to chilled wort which had fermented for about two weeks, waited 24 hrs and then filtered through a 5 micron and a 1 micron filter. I don't really see a great difference though. The directions specified that Polyclar should be used and then 2 hours later finings added. Do you think its critical to add finings or shall the Polyclar gravitate to the bottom by itself? Any help most appreciated?

I am surprised that you don't see a difference after using Polyclar 730. Polyclar 730 can be used at a rate of 5g to 25g per 25 liters. You didn't mention how much you were trying to clear, but figuring you have a 5 gal (19 liter) finished product, then you are at the lower end of the range. Perhaps a higher amount would give you a better result. At the higher end of the range, you would use 1g per liter. Don't forget that Polyclar is used to increase colloidal stability and reduce chill haze. If it is not chill haze you are after removing then this is not your product. If you are using a 1 micron ABSOLUTE filter, then there is not settling time needed, as you would catch 100% of the Polyclar. If you have a cheaper filter then consider upgrading it.
