FREE excerpt from the NEW Master Class: Stefan explains the importance of working with nature, rather than against it. By attracting more "beneficial" insects to your property, you will spend less time trapping/eliminating "pests".

What’s particularly lovely about putting down a piece of wood for beetle protection is that their favorite prey - slugs and snails - consider the wood as their own favorite hiding place.

I completely agree with you. I even feel bad when I have to spray the new growth on my apple trees with deer deterrent spray because I know it interrupts the ladybug and aphid cycle a bit. Unfortunately I can’t afford to install a 10’ fence so I have to protect my new growth.

another awesome message from my fav growing guru! the problem with us human beings is that we have to have it all. we want ALL of our harvest for us. we do not want to share and allow a balanced ecosystem. 20% of my orchard is there to support nature. 80% is for me. i do not have to check for aphids in my orchard. i have many residents who keep them in check. as soon as we spray, even "organic ones", then we disrupt the balance and cause huge problems for the future. it is better to loose 80% of your crop for a couple of years and allow your location to build natural resilience than spend decades and a lot of money fighting a loosing battle. my orchard has seen no herbicides or pesticides since i purchased the property in early 80's.

I have a pepper plant that I'm overwintering. I put it outside to water it and I came back later and it had like 5 Syrphid flies on it. Turns out it had aphids. But I was surprised by how fast it was found by the flies. Nature is awesome.

Although antlion larvae look similar to ladybug larvae, these are not the same. Antlion adults look similar to damselflies, not ladybugs. Amtlions are called thus because they make a cone-shaped hole in the sand and make mini landslides to catch ants and other small insects, they're actually pretty cool insects.

I thought oj no I have to deal w this aphid infestation problem on my strawberries. Went back the next day saw some lace wings. Then felt guilty on using an insecticide. Came back to the natural process of the lacewings taking care of the problem.

We have trouble with bald faced hornets in our 2 apple trees. We had an exterminator try to track their nest but they said it seems to be off our property. We can't go near our apple trees in the summer(center of our half acre). We have tons of veggies, herbs, fruit, etc and it's dangerous to move around our yard. 🤷

All good for freindly creatures.. am happy to have them. BUT There's a bit of problem with Wood Lice. They voraciously eat the greens on plants but as far as i know, nothing can stop them. They reproduce in enormous numbers. Well beyond birds appetites. Is there a non chemical solution?

Woodlice are a strange one, they shouldn't REALLY be eating healthy green plants, they are a clean-up operator in the forest, they primarily eat decaying plant matter so it's odd if they attack healthy plants. It's true of a lot of pests that when they attack crops it's possible that the plants aren't as healthy as you think and are under some kind of stress. That and a monocrop approach to growing that encourages a concentration of a particular insect in an area. I would investigate those two possibilities.

Ahh. thank you!! BRILLIANT! As you said, Monocrop!! 🙂 I have a massively sprawled bed of Strawberries which is where they (Wood Lice) are concentrated. I had not removed 'dead' lines from previous seasons so it was very dense as you can imagine. However, the fresh leaves always have holes in them. Is there another larvae i am missing? As far as i can taste and witness, the Strawberry plants (Sovereign variety) are in exceptional health and growth. Excepting the holes in fresh leaves and the fruits.. 😢@@thehillsidegardener3961

Anyone else love spiders! What spiders eat aphids? Aphids are sneaky and damaging. How do i really stop spider mites?
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 5 ай бұрын
Don’t spray to kill them, there are predatory mites that control them well but will be killed off if you spray poisons.
