Inadvertent stress is something we want to minimize when training our dogs, as excessive stress has the same impact on dogs as it does on us. Now, stress is everywhere, but we don’t want to create it unintentionally and don’t want our dogs to endure anxiety if we can avoid it. We’re looking at how we can set up our training to prevent our dogs from stressing out.
In the episode you'll hear:
• How dogs can stress low or high and what that stress looks like.
• That our human mechanics can reduce anxiety for dogs.
• About practicing without your dog and how that will help minimize stress.
• Why videoing will improve your training sessions and help your dog.
• How I set up my training area and include stations.
• That transitions are the gaps between the training, and we want them seamless.
• What an efficient training session is and how to minimize your dog's repetitions.
• About the importance of using Balance Breaks in your training sessions.
• An answer to a listener's question about using food when training heeling.

You mentioned shaping a head position for competition heeling. I'd love to see more specific details on that. The majority of competition heeling videos I've seen all use food or toy lures to get head position.

I have been doing targeting with my dog and works great. I can put my hand out, no verbal cue and he will touch with his nose. Using fly swatter now for nose touch and also paw touch for a longer distance “crawl”. My question is - do you have a verbal cue to distinguish between wanting the dog to paw vs nose touch the target ie fly swatter. I want to teach some other “tricks” but I can tell that I am not clear enough with my dog - he isn’t sure whether to touch with nose or paw. As you say “clarity is kindness” 😁😉

I'm new to your channel, and loving it! Yes please, it would be extremely helpful to see a full episode on how you shape behavior without luring. (I see this video was posted 11 months ago. Maybe you've already done a follow-up episode on step-by-step shaping of commands without food luring? Is it already available somewhere?)

How would you crate train a young dog, 22 and 21 months that I got at the same time and only comfortable in the crate if they can see their other friend in the other crate. I know about littermate syndrome even if they’re not related. They are a month apart. If I only put one of the two in a crate, they get destructive or bark or cry but if they see each other from each others crates, they’re fine. Right now, when I go somewhere, the three younger but bigger dogs stay outside while my little one stays inside. I have a fully fenced in yard.

I would love a video on shaping, I would rather use shaping to luring but my dog seems to get very confused and starts to offer random behaviours when I ask for a certain one, I know it’s probably something wrong with my mechanics but I don’t know what to do.

Have you done a podcast on 'pet safe wireless dog collar? I have no idea what this is, but I know it can't be good. This is not anywhere near your realm of education, but so many people I see on fb pages are asking for recommendations. Plus, sadly, I have a friend who uses one, but has it down to just saying 'beep' and the dog stops barking. Thank you.

What are some balance break activities that bring more focus for the dog? My dog loves to tug, so this is what we do most of the time, but he tends to be super aroused and sometimes I feel like we need balance breaks that don't bring that arousal level even higher. Does she have a podcast or resource on this? TIA

We live on a golf course and Abby thinks that everyone that drives or walks by is in her yard and she barks at them incessantly. How do I stop this behavior without rewarding it? We are currently working on HS the Dog and Crate Games - which she loves. Abby is a 17 month old Toy Aussie and the barking started this year. Last year she was perfectly happy to be out and watch the people, the ducks, and the geese. I love your videos and can’t watch them fast enough. You are hilarious and I am gaining a whole new perspective on training. Thank you so much for all the time and dedication. 🫶

I love this and I love all your KZbin’s you’re a wonderful trainer I know you have another dog, Border Collie that’s probably two years-old a black one are you not working her any more? I don’t see many videos with the black Border Collie in there anymore. I hope this is not a personal question I like the black one and I like this one also but I am a border collie owner and just wondered if you were still training the black one Hope okay to ask.
