This is a testament to Ben's trust in his team to see this instrument through to completion while he dealt with other personal matters. Well done, Ben and the Crimson Gutair staff!!

I really enjoy watching the crimson builds. I’m glad some of the materials chosen are marmite to a few viewers, it creates discussion and pushes those to think for themselves at what other possible options they would try on their own projects. It’s great to see a team effort on this and I look forward to many more.

For me it’s a split verdict when it comes to the finished instrument… Some things are truely what defines a custom shop instrument and some things are not. The arrangement (choice?) of tuners and the back plate (fitting and screws) are not. When some parts ”fails”, the whole instrument is ”dragged down” to a lesser level. It’s a pity, since it started out very promising. Also the scraped heel (glue removed) should have been shellaqued to obtain the same colour/tone, before being oiled. It sounds nice and ”narly” though

One question: What's your opinion of pine for building guitars? You seem to be a bit on the fence...
@Patbwoy5 ай бұрын
I once build a T-style out of knotty pine, which looked absolutely gorgeous. However, because pine is so soft, I pore-filled it with epoxy, which gave it considerably more strength. Still sounded fine :) Pine is so soft, if you look at it too sharply, you'll dent it.

It’s not Crimson’s finest hour…. The finish looks like furniture, and those tuners look really bad. I’m surprised no one thought about how the tuners would fit on that headstock design…

Applying the penetrating oil after the shellac... Is there any specific reason it was done in that order, not the other way 'round? If someone had applied beeswax to a guitar, could they then apply the penetrating oil over it? I thought the wax/shellac would create a non-porous kind of layer on the surface of the wood..? 🤔
@steveeason22075 ай бұрын
What's the purpose of the shellac coat before the finishing oil? I use the penetrating and high build oils a lot but never used shellac first.

Hi guy's . The thing that attracted me to your channel in the first place was the immense WEIRDNESS such as fantastically intricate inlays or designs from somewhere other than Earth that Ben was doing a few years ago. I would like to see more of that kind of thing. Or perhaps, you could just go ahead and build one of the designs I gave you the rights to. Something that's not just "The Same Old Tired Gibson or Fender thing."
@zubeystinzen5405 ай бұрын
It's a well put together axe but that pine needs many many coats of finish to toughen it up and the back of that headstock looks out of sorts with those blocky machine heads, perhaps the next one will be made of balsa wood 😂 someone would be having nightmares 😂

Penetrating oil on shellac?
@iandodd78285 ай бұрын
That was my thought, too. By putting down the shellac first and letting it cure, he has created a seal coat which will preventing the “penetrating” oil from, well, penetrating. Kind of defeats the purpose.

instead of drilling the second hole you couldve just strip the plastic mantle of the wiring to just before they enter the hole , and if that isnt enough take the earthscreen of the wiring too and twist all three pickup wirings together intoo a single loom , it be tight but it should fit realy like the two tone top and the way you shaped it btw

@NicoViergever5 ай бұрын
Never a fan of the bridges Gibson uses. The tune-o-matic bridge and especially the wrap around bridge are, I believe, inferior to the Fender-style individual saddle bridges. Also I would go for a different wiring. The Gibson 4 knobs with a three-way switch is suboptimal for a three pickup guitar. The fact that Gibson set standards doesn't mean they are good standards and you have to follow them. Especially not for an independent company like yours.
@JoeThornhill5 ай бұрын
I've looked at that wiring for a while now and I still don't get how that tone is master, when it looks like it only really connects to the middle P90 and blend pot. That's another thing. Why not just have 3 volumes? The knobs aren't in a contemporary line or anything, but still. Why have a blend pot when you could have a volume? Or 3 tone and 1 master volume?
@jonhaynie19875 ай бұрын
I like the wood and finish. Not a fan of the hardware. This wood wants something a bit more thoughtful. I also don't understand the fascination with a backplate attached with magnets. Are guitarists really getting into their wiring that often? Just use screws! (Use pretty screws if it makes you feel better.)
@TheJeffcurran5 ай бұрын
I've been waiting quite a while for this. I love the way it turned out. The P90s were a great choice. The only thing that I don't like is the neck joint. I think that the body should have better contour into the neck heel. But that's visual. Unless I play it I wouldn't know how it feels. All in all though, what a cool guitar. Nice work guys.

At least we didnt have to watch Ben posturing, I enjoy the films but, especially Bens offerings have too much padding and there is often too long between episodes, the hand tools only travel guitar, Ive lost the will to live waiting for that to get finished….I hate the control cavity cover method, it looks cheap and nasty on a “premium” instrument

Oh guys! I absolutely LOVE this instrument! What a joy to see it finally completed and SO beautifully! Although the redwood looks great, I think I would (if I made it myself and I would love to have a go at this build!) I would prefer a darker wood (maybe block inlays as well[?]) 100% agree with placing the output jack on the side of the lower bout, not where it’s usually shoved on an SG and where it really gets-in-the-way! Great to see/hear the guitar and look forward to your future projects! Big up to all concerned! 🥰🥰🥰🍷🍷🍷🎸🎸🎸☕️☕️☕️

Loved every part of this build... Except watching ben pound solder into the fretboard... Not abit of me for sure, i guess its hard to keep things original though. My GOD the grace kelly fretboard was nice. Maybe some of that sweet old redwood would have been nicer than solder in the fretboard. Ive enjoyed the journey of Ben's builds though and and sad to see them coming to an end :'(

I much prefer these ‘full build’ videos to the ‘shorts’ that seem to have dominated recently. The only problem with this video is that it’s been way way too long since the start of the build and I’d forgotten all about the guitar. Nice build although I’d have preferred a colour on the pine and the tuners look crammed in on the back of the headstock. Can’t help thinking there must have been a neater option - open backs?? But very nice nevertheless

I’m so old I remember those days back in the late 1970s when ‘neck relief’ was an almost unheard of phrase - especially in the world of electric set up. ALL magazine reviews would talk about an absolutely flat neck along the scale was absolutely essential, and a good review was 100% dependant on that. There were no ‘vintage’ models, let alone reviews of old guitars. It is a totally different world now.
@scottlevine50305 ай бұрын
To my mind a perfectly flat neck is still the goal. Relief is for when you can't get it flat and right

It's pretty cool, right? The only thing I would've done differently is put the oil on before the shellac. You get a deeper color that way. I know they were using the shellac as a sealer and the oil as a varnish, but they can easily be reversed for a different effect.

recently I painted the Pickup cavities of my guitar with shielding paint and the guitar is silent. there is no shielding in the control cavity. this luthier did not shield the pickup cavities, only the control cavity, and I question just how effective that will be.
