I always loved Buttons...........He was way ahead of everyone's moves. He had a feel of the ocean that was unique to him. Even the star surfers like Shaun Thompson, in my opinion, could not touch him. Buttons did NOT get the recognition he truly deserved nor the countless victories he should have acquired in competition. He was an innovator of the sport. LONG LIVE BUTTONS!!!!!!

Something very magical about how Buttons surfed. I hope he found peace in the end. His surfing brought joy to many...

I can tell you that he did. With the help of his friends (DaHui) he found much piece of mind and happiness 2010 and on! He cleaned up his world. Got in maybe the best physical shape of his life at 52 . Married an incredible woman (Hiriata)had a lovely new daughter. Got very involved with the community and GIVING BACK thru access Surf and his Surf School! Ventured back to Costa Rica and spread the kind of Aloha that only Buttons could! . Getting to know him in his later years , if only for a moment , I can tell you that the man had attained Real REDMPTION and Spiritual PEACE! ~~~~~Aloha

Growing up surfing, I always heard the best surfers say that the best surfer in the world is the one having the most fun. By this measure , Buttons was the best. Even beyond having the most fun in the water , he was years ahead of everyone else by the maneuvers he was pulling off. So much Aloha wrapped up in one person inspires us all.

Mark Lidell is the most gracious dude. It's so great to see, since I grew up in Pearl City (birthplace of T&C) during that entire era. Saw them in the water all the time, they were the lords. Lidell's surfing was featured in lots of films during that period-- he and Buttons were pretty much the central figures in Many Classic Moments and they pulled it off, they were great--but I don't remember much dialogue.

1974 at Uluwatu Buttons Before he drove 16 year old you could see even on a skate board he just shredded .Really friendly fun to be around . Loved to party which I think as he got older was a problem . But when ever we hung out either at Ulus or Pipe little at Sandy beach it was always fun he only knew me as “ skate board” it’s sad he’s gone so early .

Hung out with him 1 summer, 80s ,outrageously funny and cool, told me to call him da solo popolo, which was only pro surfer at the time! Jeff S I surfed with you! USD, scali. Matk westside oahu.

As a young kid 11 yrs old in 1975, I graduated to Kaisers after working my way up the reefs from Queens to Pops, to Threes. Way out of my comfort zone, on a head high , light trades, packed Late August afternoon. The lineup was filled with All the locals. A set loomed and riding a tanker , was Buttons , He set himself up perfectly . And stuffed himself into a machine like tube so casually, and came right out. It was amazing. I didn't catch any waves. I just watched and learned . I'll never forget his smile , the vibe in the water was just pure aloha.

*_”Buttons had everything thrown at him. He was a classic example of too much, too soon, too young.”_* Absolutely correct & true about all sports, which physically or mentally kills a lot of athletes. Definitely the best & most talented surfer ever, far better than Kelly in terms of raw talent - remember, he’s doing all of this on a single fin.
