What about the salinity impact of that Wet skim you just did? You were removing salt water, and ATO fresh water. I understand that through regular skimming that should not be an issue, but in that case, it was a substancial salt water removal and adding Fresh. I'm curious about this one...

@ExopMan4 жыл бұрын
I could maybe see this being worthwhile on a very high nutrient/heavy fish tank but generally don't see it as being practical imo. That reservoir is going to get disgusting and smaller systems won't like the associated salinity changes. Also adding more components that can fail.

Hi Jake. You might have mentioned it in the previous video, but i somehow missed it.. U do have salt water in the top off reservoir, right? I have a DIY 15ltr waste tank that my skimmer fills. I used a 3 pin plug that I placed on the top of the tanks and have wired to my apex. When the waste shorts the terminals it sets an alarm and trips off the skimmer.

Always enjoy your videos Jake. This solution is for procrastinators though. You still have to get the junk out but this time there is much more. Plus the smell that stays longer in your sump. I love the DIY gravity fed ATO btw.
@iczerone20004 жыл бұрын
Always good to see a updated video from RB. As I suspected, you would use a pump to pump out the nasties from the ATO chamber to a drain. However, in my opinion. I would have just kept the float switch on the protein skimmer and just go buy a long silicone tubing and directly plumbed it into the drain. That would save me an extra ATO external tank for another system and just use the ATO chamber. But that's just me.

Can the holes be drilled in the lid to keep the warranty? peristaltic pump would get clogged if its smaller tubing and real thick skimate. Also highly recommend the apex for this. what i do is take a float valve and install it on a 5 gallon bucket, then the bucket can just be taken to the sink and dumped out. another thing is if that skimmer is putting off so much you plan on emptying that daily then your salinity is gonna be all over the place. another reason to have apex on there to monitor salinity, definitely if it was someone running a reef tank. And the apex could automatically run a pump to empty it, could even have an auto cleaning function in there where it cycles water through it a few times and a wavemaker stirs it around.
@undergroundreefs65234 жыл бұрын
and if you wanted to get crazy could automatically correct your salinity with apex as well.

Wet skimming has no real advantage on dry skimming. I had a similar method, however, I only collected the poo on a 5gal bucket outside the sump. I also had a calc hydroxide reactor which compensated my loss in salinity and I think it's not your case so you'd better watch out.
@danceresort4 жыл бұрын
Get an Apex, hook the switch up to the Apex, tell that to then turn a pump on to empty the Skimmer cup and send you an alert. Far better solution.

This one I don’t get.... the waste collector by definition should be easy to disconnect and take away to empty and clean, whereas the ATO is likely never going to need cleaning. So the waste colector should be a stand alone reservoir that can be moved while the ATO can be a fixed part of the sump 🤔

Totally agree. You need some automated system to replace what you skim if its that large a volume. Been thinking about something similar, but did not implement it because of the drop in salinity. Some sort of peristaltic pump pair perhaps.
