Appreciate you sharing this history with us. I don't recall ever watching his artistry but recently learned that he was both actor and director.

I have much respect for Spencer Williams . . . there is more to this man than "Andy" !!!

Great to see this Al Christie film, long-neglected early film comedy director and producer. Christie made these for Paramount, but only from 1928-1929.

Man, I've been saying this for years: *Wendell Pierce* should do something on the life and times of *Spencer Williams*.

Creswell Formey Thanks, Bro. Part of the problem, I think, is many folks link the great *Spencer Williams* with "Amos 'n Andy". Years ago, I used to go to the *Museum of TV & Radio* and watch episode after episode. ✊

Tailor-Made Media Yeah, man. A lot of folk don’t realize he was quite the prolific director and writer before “Amos ‘n’ Andy.” And yeah, A&A is a SERIOUS guilty pleasure of mine; don’t tell nobody, but I own about 12 episodes on DVD. 😂

Al Christie was my great great Uncle. I don't thinkmany of the Christie brothers' films remain. This one is from Paramount. The Christie's produced hundreds of comedy shorts, white and black. Al,Christie hired Spencer Williams Jr. first as a sound man, then as he realized his talents, gave him free reign to write the dialogue for these films, direct black shorts etc.

My grandfather was an immigrant from Russia. His best buddy in Connecticut was black. My grandfather hung out at black bars because he thought that blacks were more fun.

Were these movies made for the enjoyment of African-Americans or as a variety of the minstrel show? The actors' talent shines through the low budget and it was probably refreshing at the time to see African-Americans on the screen not working as some sort of servant. Octavus Roy Cohen, who was white, specialized in stories that gave (mostly) white readers of the Saturday Evening Post an excursion into stereotypical black life. The link below leads to an article on Florian Slappey, one of his characters who was a detective in Harlem. (N-bomb alert) www.thrillingdetective.com/slappey.html

These Christie shorts were designed to show off the talents ofThe Lafayette Players, an all black acting troupe. Distributed by Paramount Pictures, they were targeted to general audiences, but yes, Cohen and Spencer Williams definitely bring this to a higher/non stereotypical level.
