Comedian Rudy Ray Moore transitioned 11 years ago this month. The film biography, Dolemite Is My Name (starring Eddie Murphy), is currently playing in select theaters and will be released globally via Netflix on October 25, 2019. We at Reelblack are putting our weight on it tonight in celebration and remembrance.
The dominance of Black radio was instrumental in the success of Black Film in the 1970s (and also the 1990s). Hit singles by popular artists like James Brow, Issac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield were in heavy rotation up to a month prior to a film's opening. Studios bought ad time with with custom-made radio spots designed to capture the imagination of young moviegoers.
