Bayard Rustin's contribution to the Civil Rights movement have been buried and overlooked for decades. He was one of the most effective strategist and organizers who worked with MLK. I wish we were able tap into the foresight he had then because it is sorely needed now.

This man’s been arrested more than once for being caught in the act with other men (public lewdness) out in public. Where did he come from all of sudden? What was his background?? Who decided to make him relevant to the cause at that time?? I strongly believe he was a PLANT/INFILTRATE placed in that position by the Z****ST. I appreciate this brother's contribution, he and Malcolm X differed on our progress forward. Malcolm taught us that the Democrats and the Republicans were two sides of the same coin, some paid attention and a large majority of us listened to Mr Rustin and started trying to win and progress through the polls, it took us until 2023 to start seeing with our eyes and hearing with our ears, we have no party, we have no friends in politics, we vote, we wait to see if anything different happens for us and it don't and it gets worse, so a large majority will now vote for the couch. NO REPARATIONS NO VOTE.

Vote for what? If we don’t see our advocates of our agenda on the ballot, then we’re engaging in an exercise to empower others. H Rap talked about this, the futility of voting for candidates we don’t know, who were put in front of us and we’re told “make a choice.”

Protests don’t do anything these days. That stopped during the civil rights era and the civil rights era was as productive as it was because we actually had an economic base. We now do not have an economic base due to integration so these days protests are ways to vent, that’s it.
@MSILBB
@MSILBB 6 ай бұрын
I also meant to add that your economic base is what controls your political landscape, which was the other person’s point. Many people think sheer voting will solve our issues and it won’t. Politics functions the same from the local to federal, money driven. Now of course you can vote on some measures but other than that, as a whole and how we need our issues solved on a federal basis, voting without having any sort of leverage is useless.

Despite their being very intelligent people everyone has their own strengths/roles. Rustin was a strategist, and Baldwin was a gifted communicator. Their private lives weren’t relevant to their public work. What both men did with their respective talents was valuable to the project at large. Would you scold a hammer for not being a paintbrush when building or repairing a house? I invite you to adjust your view. Methods of activism vary from inspiration, information (and provocation of thought), instruction of initiative (and other actions). One should activate what they are best at to harness focus. A jack of all trades is a master of none. A movement needs masters.

@@cestladope You just submitted to me a very inane loquacious rant. My position speaks for itself; Rustin was more of an activist than Baldwin. Some say he was an agent, but that doesn't negate his activism in Harlem, nor does his Quacker religion. Baldwin was extremely articulate, but by now, we should know that articulation does not transform conditions. Observe the Civil Rights Leaders, Pastors, Political Pundits etc. The rhetoric is sweet sounding, but sour in reality. Finally, I was not a fan of either one of them, but my 60s activism impelled me , via observation, to credit Rustin for the work that he did in Harlem, and with the March on Washington. Cease with the rhetorical rant.

Baldwin was most certainly an activist who put his life on the line for the movement and spoke up for blacks anywhere and everywhere he went and whenever he was questioned. Baldwin was most certainly a high force for progress and had a high impact during the civil rights era. Rustin did take his advocacy for the civil rights movement to another level by being a high level strategist and architect of civil rights movement and even wrote for Dr. King some very powerful speeches! His involvement transcended Baldwins in that regard...however...Baldwins influence on literature poetry and the Icon he became in amongst academics and scholars...made him a larger than life image and visual example for blacks..especially youths...that gave them the motivation to succeed in education and literature! Once all the smoke cleared, the net impact that both of these men had were identical. With Baldwin being the visual force of Nature and Ruston behind the scenes force of nature
