As a boy, I was in love with Sapphire (Ernestine Wade)... She was the only woman I remember from back then that had some 'BACK'... and much too pretty and young to be the Kingfish's wife, but they made it work, seamlessly!

Everyone should thank Bill Cosby for taking Amos and Andy off of the air and out of view of the public. Bill Cosby bought all of the film and production rights of the synthetic. He said it portrayed black people in a negative way. I think Bill Cosby has portrayed and shown black people in a negative way. I wonder if Bill Cosby ever thought of how much the people and viewing public loved watching the Amos and Andy show. It is truly missed. Today the Amos and Andy show is considered the first and best situation comedy ever written.

This show was a good comedy that also tried to introduce many examples of successful black folk's to the wider population. While the Kingfish and his schemes always failed. And the better values were upheld. But the NAACP and some other's wanted to be the one's that decided what was allowed. And CBS caved. In the 70's much more degrading black comedy became common.

@@douglasturner6153 Very much ahead of its time in this regard. You would think the “woke” crowd would have championed this show for having a 99% black cast, but it goes to show you they can’t be satisfied. They have to find fault in everything.

Because test that time prevalent attitudes existed and considered all were like King Fish. The program hilarious. Here in SF east bay 40 years ago people STILL complained. Requires sense of humor; an intellectual acumen; but it was the time when we “negros” were considered stupid. Many cast members spoke “the king’s English” impeccable.

The scene where Kingfish and the sales lady spoke in whispers was due to the television production codes back then, where the script writers had to be careful about the subject of women having babies, as words such as _pregnant_ could not be said on TV in that era.

So he has enough money to buy his wife an expensive fur coat and also is wealthy enough to pay a monthly fee to keep it in a climate-controlled storage facility, but can't afford to buy his wife a dress? What blows my mind more than anything is that even the first TV comedy shows, from the very inception of TeeVee actually used laughtracks or canned laughter, as they do to this very day. YT won't allow me to provide a link, but if you do a YT search for, TV comedy scenes with laughtracks removed, you'll find scenes from episodes of 'Friends' that are mindblowing without the canned laughter.

According to my research and reading, an episode can take about 10 days to complete. The brand new CBS studios had a 500 seat capacity for a staged audience. An episode would be shown to the audience, laughter recorded and then added back into the episode.
