To me, the greatest part of this movie is that when Kyle Reese was wondering what Sarah was thinking of at that exact moment the picture was taken. Turns out she was thinking of Kyle. Lovers lost beyond time.

She reveals to John through time-captured cellophane that Kyle is his dad. "Otherwise, you could never be." Plus, the fact that John knew this from the time he reviewed those tapes that Kyle was his dad, but he'd have to send hime to his death, alone and naked. One day, I hope we NEVER discover time-travel because everyone's shit would get all fucked up. It would make 2022 look like a carnival.

@@jjkhawaiian time travel exists, but it only displaces you in time, not in space. and earth is rotating at tremendous speed. plus it orbits the sun at tremendous speed. AND the sun rotates around the galaxy at an even faster speed, and the galaxy itself is hurtling through space towards the andromeda galaxy. so when you go back in time an hour, you end up dying in the vacuum of space, because, again, it only displaces you in time, not in space. to where the planet was, in the universe to where it is going is radically different when you factor in all these variables.

"Never a dull moment" is right, this movie works as a sci-fi thriller, as an action movie, as a zombie horror movie, as a dark romance with themes of fate and loss and choice... it's just SO GOOD. The amount of care and detail that went into this is pretty extraordinary to read about (and their early thoughts on casting the Terminator are well worth looking up, trust me.) I think my favorite detail is that Arnold modeled the Terminator's gaze on security cameras. Every time he looks at something, his eyes rotate, lock on, and then his head swivels to match his gaze so he never loses the target. It's so subtle but drives home the robotic deliberateness he does so well.

Yeah I first watched this at a really formative age about 13 & that was a great poignant ending including the little Mexican kid who says "There's a storm coming" pointing at the clouds & weather. Sarah says "I know" solemnly ...not talking about weather! This movie had the similar effect on me as The Matrix which inspired me to watch this one even though it was old.- they really had a powerful effect on me. Now I'm 32 & movies no longer thrill like they do when you're in your teens...which is a bummer. 😁

That jump and yell at the lizard. 😄 I've always loved Sarah's character development. She went from care free innocent, to damsel in distress, to actively fighting. And most importantly, it all felt natural. The character didnt do over the top stuff that she shouldn't know how to do. And Arnold... The man knew how to pull off menacing. Then there is Michael Biehn. The guy did so much in the 80s and 90s. Very underrated.

I love Sarah Connor, she is such a great main character. Movies today show female heroes as magical beings who can do no wrong, and one is more boring than the next (because they can have no real development, if they already start out perfect). Sarah is a waitress who has her day ruined by a ball of ice cream, but she gets thrown into this impossible situation and learns to rise to the occasion. THAT is a character that the audience can sympathize with.

But, it's fame became and instant cult classic for fantasy and comic book hero movies. It was R-Rated and very occultic and pre-medieval warfare, so you lost families and most ladies, unless they're with their boyfriend/spouse or like those kinds of movies. I liked both Conan movies. But, nothing comes close to the Terminator series. I'd place Predator above Conan, too, but that's a close second.

"I'll Be Back." The first time Arnold used his now signature phrase. ... ... ... Kyle used to wonder what Sarah was thinking about in that photo. At the end of the movie, when the photo was taken, she was thinking of him. The ending has been altered from the original theatrical release. In the original, when she drives towards the storm, the scene fades back to the Terminator, it's red eye lit.

"There literally has not been one dull moment in this movie." Exactly! lol Your reactions encapsulate why this film holds up so well almost 40 years later. Everyone involved, starting with James Cameron, really put their hearts into this film. The main 3 actors Schwarzenegger, Hamilton, and Biehn as T-800, Sarah, and Kyle were exceptional and even the minor characters like Sarah's friends and the cops and the psychiatrist felt completely real and lived in. You saw how Schwarzenegger walked like a robot/cyborg early on before knowing he was one, then realized he looked more robotic in appearance right after he got burned. The movie cleverly and slowly reveals his robotic nature as the movie wears on. It's fast paced action, yet somehow manages to give important plot details and exposition that doesn't slow the film. Not once did it feel like this film cheated or skimped on the viewer. And it was a very low budget of only 6 million dollars, which was peanuts even way back then. Low budget, high execution. EDIT: I'm going to be the dissenting vote and say that I don't think T2 is better than this. It is what it is, but I've always preferred T1. I had problems with T2, but had no such issues with T1.
@ashokupad
@ashokupad Жыл бұрын
Oh, without a doubt the original is best. T2 is a lot of fun, but is also a distinctly "Hollywood" film. The humor is less natural, as exemplified by the obvious use of one-liners. It was also a poor choice to make the Terminator "loveable".

T1 and T2 were great movies. I enjoyed T3 as well for what it was. T4 how ever they tried too hard and started messing it up and it just fell apart there. Back in the early 90s when T2 came out, I always wished for them to make a T3 that ended the trilogy with the nuclear war taking place. Then if they wanted to start another trilogy then have it fully set in the future between judgement day and the day that Kyle is sent back and the war is won. That would have completed the whole series creating a perfect loop back to the first movie.

It's great that young people today can still watch 'important' films from the past and get why they were so popular. Obviously there is 'baggage' associated with many of these films that come in the form of prequels and sequels which aren't a secret, but It's good to understand the source material so one can make up their own minds about the value of media that follows the originals.

The 80's was all about action, sex scenes, stye, music, cool one liners, gore, violence... Studios often pursued at least an MA or R rating and the video box and movie posters wore it like a badge of honour. All the kids at school would brag about all the stuff they got to see over the weekend like Terminator, Predator, Robocop, Cyborg, Conan, Mad Max, Aliens, Rambo etc. I remember going around to my friend's house for play time and his mum had let him rent out this absolute pile of filth. One minute there were boobies everywhere and the next, people were getting limbs chopped off left, right and centre. My mum then picked me up and asked what we got up to LOL. It is kind of the opposite direction that films are going in these days. They're all chasing family friendly ratings and cutting out all of the visceral, exciting and realistic stuff. Don't get me wrong though, there are great movies of all kinds of genres from this era - but these were the ones the boys used to boast about seeing the most. People went nuts over horror too. I really pity the kids these days, as all they seem to have to watch is reruns of PG rated Marvel films that Disney churns out. Its like they're tapped out of imagination. The 80s was a really cool time to be growing up - so much happening on top of a backdrop of war and famine in a lot of places and the cold war. The Japanese were on the ascendancy and buying up everything, and this plays out in a lot of futuristic stuff like Blade Runner, Back to the Future 2 and Robocop. One thing I notice with younger audiences is that they often don't get the context of the time or the background themes and messages that some of the films are putting out. I often forget how many movies from the 80s stood the test of time and are there for another generation to discover.

Mr D: [Edited] And studios weren't afraid to try out stuff and give talented writers and directors a chance. And mixing genres was fairly usual. Like The Terminator was sci fi horror, the same as Alien/Aliens. But, it's so cool to see Michael Myers in the character of The Terminator. Even the part where he burned after the truck was blown up was almost exactly like Myers stumbling, falling, and burning at the end of Halloween II. So fun to see that reference as a Halloween nerd. Carpenter did the right thing using Myers as one of the templates for the villain. haha

Even the game industry is doing the same thing. Just look at Tomb Raider games every game since the original her bust has gotten smaller. Its just like the game Terminator Resistance, that was a great game and they put in two optional sex cut scenes in that was very Terminator like and felt like it was heavily inspired style wise from this movie. But the developers were told last minute to censor the cut scenes. Its sad cause I do not believe we will ever go back to those days where movies sought the R rating and games sought the sex appeal. Too many people ignorantly think you cant have nudity or sex and do it tastefully. All one has to do is look at this movie there was nudity but it went with the story and tied everything up with a nice bow. It wasnt thrown in just for the sake of having it.

The only sequel worth watching is "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" (1991). The rest of the Terminator films are garbage. Agree with the last two comments that I prefer Terminator 1 to the sequel (even tho the sequel is still good). I find the sequel to be a little more of a family movie trying to appeal to all audiences, kind of a big blockbuster popcorn movie with some cheesy one liners and tropes, whereas the first was more original and smarter in my opinion. T1 is one of a handful of movies I could throw on anytime, anywhere and it just makes me happy (even tho it's dark and a horror if that makes sense lol)

I will do anything you ask... If you are suffering as much as I am, please, tell me." Or... "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth." And finally, we musn't forget this last gem... "I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them.
