My maternal grandmother lived in Willimansett, MA in 1929 and witnessed the Summit House fire from the third floor of her home.

I've been to the summit dozens of times and was aware that there had been a summit house, but never could have imagined how developed it was. Glad much has reverted back to its natural state. Thanks for this.

It's hard for people to imagine this nowadays but for brief period this area, with the summit houses on Mt. Tom and Mt. Holyoke (which still stands) was one of the biggest summer tourists areas in the country.

My father used to ski on Mt. Tom when I was a kid and I used to go to the Mountain Park Amusement park also nearby. There were also some state roads that ran up and through there from what I remember. Huge fossilized trees had sections that were cut out to make way for the road up the mountain. I was quite a beautiful area in the summer.

Sad the area is gone. Those days the class of the people and the way they dressed and the respect for one another back then and now nothing comes close to what the area was once. Springfield city of homes, and Holyoke now places to avoid.
