It's nice to see young people care about preserving the history of Holyoke or any city or state for that matter! Salute!

Finally! Someone who gets it! The city's past needs to be preserved. I grew up in Holyoke when the mill buildings were still being used for manufacture. Save them- what's left of them . And save the train station too.

Holyoke is a great city, just like in Greenfield, the middle class abandoned downtown long ego, and all the factories left. A lot of people from Puerto Rico moved there in the 70's a think. And the city was heavily promoted as a section 8 haven for people who did not want to move to New York. So down town is not invested in, but the outskirts are pretty nice. The holyoke people often go to Northampton a near by college, artsy town to hang out. There's a great flea market in south hadley along a scenic route that goes into Amherst. There is also Mr. Tom reservation, if you go, try going to the very top summit, the reservation guards close the road access to the top so you have to walk. The summit used to be a hotel with horse stables, and the whole thing burned down, the hotel foundation is still there, and it's pretty eerie like someone is watching you. Love Holyoke....

Nice video. It would be wonderful to save these historic buildings. It would be a shame to have them only in photographs.

Last week I came to Holyoke for the first time and I can honestly say that I was shocked by the condition of Main Street with tons of abandoned houses that were boarded up. Everything looked so drab and sad and as I was driving down the mostly empty streets to get to the highway, I thought that this town would make a great setting for an apocalyptic movie. Instead of waiting for the owners of these buildings to finally take responsibility, why not tear the area down and develop a beautiful park with walkways, ponds, play grounds, picnic area, etc? This would be something all residents could enjoy. I do think that the city has a lot of potential and I do hope for the sake of the residents that something will be done soon.

I would love to buy all the abandoned buildings and for sale buildings and rebuild Holyoke.

If you could 'reclaim' the buildings and 'keep' them for the city with the lazy landlords out of the picture, it would be more of an inducement to help out these buildings. If you could take space, rent free, and be creative with it, it would really be an incentive. If you could get skilled industry types to come and live rent free in exchange for expertise and skills, it would really be different and a way to get a small town and it's people working again. Holyoke could be a 'reality show'.

Holyoke (Hol-yoke, not Ho-ly-oke) was once the most prosperous city on the East Coast. It, because of its canal system and energy generation, produced some of the finest paper and textiles in North America, and arguably, the world. It was planned as an industrial city, and it excelled. But, as industry matured, Holyoke was left behind, because it couldn't adapt to change.

Dude it’s not the Puerto Rican’s fault. They moved in when the conditions were already poor.
