Not only did the sled crash actually happen, they used ACTUAL FOOTAGE of it in this movie. Fortunately, none of them were hurt.

"Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its bobsled time! Cool Runnings!" Fun Fact: The crash scene at the end of the movie, except for the close-up shots, was the real footage of the actual Jamaican bobsled team crash taken from the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. Historical Fact: Contrary to the story in movie, the Jamaican team was met with open arms by the international Bobsledding teams. One of the other teams even went so far as to lend the Jamaican team a back-up sled so they could qualify. The infamous crash wasn't due to a mechanical error, but more or less losing control of the sled at such a high speed. Sporting Fact: In the sport of bobsledding, adding weight to the sled is perfectly legal. In fact, sometimes it's a safety measure. Both two and four-man sleds have minimum and maximum weights. The weight of the sled is calculated as the total weight of the sled and its crew. If the fully loaded sled weighs less than the minimum, it is perfectly legal to add weight to make up the difference.

I think Irv’s talk basically meant that if you only see your self worth through the lens of how much you win, rather than by how much effort you put in, then losing feels fatal to you (or at least your self image). That’s how I viewed it. The shame should never be on failing at something, but on failing to give it everything you’ve got. If you’re content knowing you’ve left everything out on the field, then “you’re enough”.

I think the incident you were thinking of, where a bobsledder died, was actually the case of Nodar Kumaritashvili, who was an Olympic luger (not a bobsledder). During a practice run for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he flew off the track into a steel piller. He died instantly :(

While this film is highly fictionalized, the Jamaican Bobsled Team were celebrated as heroes here in Calgary for their performance during our Olympics. The same is true of the film "Eddie The Eagle" (unfortunately not filmed here) - Eddie is a huge celebrity here and frequently returns for personal appearances :) A friend of mine was an extra in this film, specifically in the crowd at the finish line when the Jamaicans carried their bobsled across the finish line. She tells me that a lot of her fellow extras had tears in their ears. Everything you said about setting the right example is on display here.

I loved this movie when I was younger. I've only ever skated once and I'm still paying for it Iol, my dad took me to a pond and before I even got to the ice I slipped on the ice under the snow, fell, and my foot went the wrong way and I tore ligaments, 30 some odd years later I still get pain in it. Needless to say, I don't ice skate lol.

I don't think the disqualification was about racism, the "embarrassment" was Irv and his former coach and a lot of people who were affected by his scandal were directly involved in making the decision to disqualifie them. Hence the speech "you can hate me but my boys did nothing wrong" showing them the collateral damage their hatred for Irv was creating and them reversing their decision.

That's the legendary John Candy who's been in so many movies my fingers would cramp trying to list them now. Ask that same question to your lovely wife and look at the expression of utter disbelief you'll get back. The ironic thing is that I know if you picked any of his movies you would totally enjoy them. Hi Dillon. I just thought that you would like to know that the scene where they find out that their coach cheated by putting weights in the front of the Bobsleigh is not actually illegal. If the entire team weigh less than the standard limit then you can legally add weights to the Bobsleigh to reach the correct weight so that all the teams weigh to same to make everyone equal with no advances or disadvantages. You will however be disqualified if you intentionally deceive the sport by adding more than the legal amount of weight.

I can’t help but feel this movie would be called “woke” by some, and “unwoke” by others in todays world. It’s a trope and Hollywood, but I t’s just a great feel good film, with a good message, and safe to show kids. Some other good films out there Invictus, Rudy, Miracle, 42, the list can go on…
