It's based on a true story at the Calgary Olympics. Same one that had Eddie the Eagle. After that Olympics they changed the rules to keep amateurs out. Shame since they're all supposed to be amateurs. People rooted more for them than the professional armatures. They knew they couldn't win but wanted to just be able to compete and represent, what the Olympics was originally about. The antithesis of that mentality was the Atlanta games.

Since these 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Jamaica always has a team participating to the Bobsleigh event at each Winter Olympics. And they are a respected nation in this sport since these '88 Olympic Games, because they often perform decently. In Jamaica it has become a tradition and a pride, to have a Bobsleigh team. Nowadays they even have several teams (4-man, but also 2-man, and they have a women's team since 2018). *They usually have excellent/powerful pushers, thanks to the quality (and number) of great sprint runners the country produces... Jamaica is so great at sprint running that there obviously isn't a spot for everyone in Track & Field sprint races at the Olympics... Therefore, the same way many US basketball players go to play overseas or many Brazilian soccer players go to play in Europe, there always are Jamaican runners who choose Bobsleigh from the get go, because you have way more chances to end up participating to the Olympics that way 👍✨✨ PS : Agreed, this movie has a lot of heart 💛🖤💚

It's very important for a country to have a sport they all support, preferably also a national team which represents the country well, both on and off the "field". Norway has cross-country skiing, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia has Rugby, Germany (and most countries) have football and so on and so on.

"A gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it." -Irv Blitzer, portrayed by John Candy in "Cool Runnings. The crash didn't happen for the reasons shown in the film, but it did happen. They used real footage of it in the film. One of team members later said he "felt a bump" when they tipped, but did not realize they had turned over until he started to smell his helmet (which was fiberglass) friction-burning on the ice, "which is something that stays with you for many years afterward."

Cool Runnings is a great movie. It's also interesting from a movie making perspective in that it's a comedy cast with almost totally unknown actors, except for one of the all-time comedy greats, John Candy, and _his_ role is one of the only ones that is (mostly) not played for laughs. Ironically, this very funny movie is one of the best examples of John Candy's _serious_ acting chops.

Disney originally envisioned the cast with Denzel Washington as Derice Bannock, Eddie Murphy as Sanka Coffie, Wesley Snipes as Yul Brenner, and Marlon Wayans as Junior Bevil. Also, 20:55... yeah, Calgary's a cowboy town. A number of westerns were shot around here, actually, most notably (IMO) Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, shot around the Calgary area (and in Drumheller, actually).

I was an exchange student for a year at University of Saskatchewan from 2008 to 2009 and one day we had -51°C. I did not go outside that day! As I'm used to walk everywhere in my home country, I also walked to the dorms one night from the bar, thinking that it's only a 15-minute walk and it shouldn't be a problem. It was -46 degrees that day and in hindsight it was pretty foolish of me. On a lighter note, I also remember when we started getting warmer weather by early March, and I felt great that Spring is finally coming... but it was still around -25 to -30 degrees. Nowadays these temperatures don't scream "warm weather!" to me, but back then after that horrible winter it felt amazing.

I was nine years old when this movie came out and I had so much trouble comprehending the ending. Firstly because this movie was marketed so hard as a goofy comedy and I went into it with similar expectations as you guys, but more importantly I didn't understand how they could make movie about people who lost AND that all the people were still applauding them. My aunt had to explain it to me and I was still very unsatisfied for days. So this movie became somewhat of a cultural awakening in multiple ways for me. Not only did I learn more about a lot of cultural and environmental differences and hardships, but also about defeating stereotypes and standing up for yourself, aswell as that winning isn't everything. Especially the last part was super hard to understand as a german kid from a very small town. Our "Leistungsgesellschaft" (Meritocracy) is so hardcoded into parenting that I just couldn't understand the idea of not getting punished for failing. Thats something that just didn't exist in my world.

One of my favorite movies from my childhood! Glad to see somebody reacting to it! FYI, much of the bobsled footage is actual footage of the Jamaican team from 1988, including the crash. Also, throughout the movie, the Jamaicans are ridiculed as outsiders, especially by the team from East Germany. But in real life, all the other teams demonstrated proper respect and sportsmanship to the Jamaicans. One team even lent them a backup sled so they could compete.

Great movie, but it was heavily Disneyfied. For starters, the four man bobsled team had very anglo-saxon names: Dudley, Chris, Michael, Devon. Also, the European teams (yes, the Germans too) were nice to them and were excited to see a new country added to the winter olympics. I understand the change was to help with the "underdog" aspect common in sports movies, but I still find it cool that the other teams didn't care about color irl And as others have mentioned, that footage of the bobsled crashing was real and it is incredibly gnarly to look at. First time I saw it, I could have sworn their necks were broken. John Candy is fucking awesome btw 🇨🇦

I like the fact that there is a Jamaica Cup. This is awarded to the highest placed team from a country without a bobsled track. There are only 12 countries with competition tracks at the moment, so this means there can be a some competition for this cup.

The Jamaican Bobsled Team, finished last, Eddie the "Eagle" the greatest and only Ski Jumper to ever come out of Great Britain, who was also known as "the flying sack of potatoes" finished last, and Prince Albert of Monaco, whose teams were also-rans is the 2 and 4 man Bobsled, were all great underdog stories at 88 Olympics in Calgary. So Calgary which has a proud western heritage is also home to the Calgary Stampede, the most prestigious rodeo on earth. Many classic Western Movies, like Unforgiven, Open Range, Little Big Man and TV Show like Hell on Wheels and Lonesome Dove were shot in and around Calgary. The Ranchman's Bar that was featured in this movie is notorious for sometimes going full Double Deuce, the bar with the band behind the chicken wire, portrayed in the movie Road House.

The reason they had a country western bar in Calgary, is because Calgary is full of real cowboys like a more northern Wyoming or Montana, I actually think that it's right over the border

Another John Candy movie I think that you guys should watch, is Canadian Bacon. And as a big guy myself, us big guys can be a lot faster than some people think, it’s just that we are fast over short distances. 15:36 Where I’m from, -25 is a tropical heat wave at times.

@TBR Scmitt - If you enjoyed this Movie, as you should because it is such a marvelous tale of believing in yourself to fulfill your dreams, whatever they might be, you should check out 'Eddie the Eagle', which is another Underdog story about an English ski Jumper, featuring Hugh Jackman as the coach and Taron Egerton (More known for playing Eggsy in the Kingsmen Movies ) as Eddy. A much recommended movie.

Just prior to the 88 Winter Olympics there were TV commercials. beer I think where the caption was The Jamaican Bobsled Team Training someone on a beach. walks over to a large Ice Cooler to get a beer opens the door and there's 4 men in Jamaican colors Freezing in there, one hands a beer to the person. He closes the door this is best of my recollection there might be clips of these commercials also we all thought they were a joke until the Olympics

Cool Runnings is based off a true story, the plot is mostly fiction but there is real footage of Jamaica's first bobsled team, this also happened the same year as another unlikely Winter Olympics story; Eddie the Eagle, which there's also a movie about with Hugh Jackman and Taron Edgerton
