This isn't exactly a horror movie, Jen, it's more of a horror comedy, but thanks for doing this movie! 😄 Death Becomes Her came out at the dawn of the CGI era of the 90s, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1993.

Fun Fact: The cinematography for Death Becomes her was done by long time John Carpenter collaborator Dean Cundy, who also worked on Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, Halloween II, The Thing, and Big Trouble In Little China, along with previous Robert Zemeckis films like Romancing The Stone, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and the Back To The Future trilogy.

This was always one of Bruce Willis's best roles. Totally against type, playing a weak, scared man, nothing like Die Hard or any other movie he's done before or since. He actually acted in this and did a fantastic job.

Fun fact: Ernest had another love interest in the film called Toni (played by Tracey Ullman) who was a bartender in the film. After the makers decided to change the ending all of her scenes were deleted. After Ernest lands in the swimmingpool the potionbottle is still intact and he takes it with him to Toni who then stages Ernest's death. You can still see some of her scenes in the original theatrical trailer including other deleted scenes. There was a so much cut from this film. The ending had the two devious ladies looking pretty, sitting at a terrace in Switzerland being bored while Helen suggests other places to go. Then we see Ernest and Toni also there... in the park. They are old... and we see Ernest covering Toni's old hand with his still young hand. Madeline (Not knowing its Ernest and Toni) comments on how pathetically old those two look and Helen says yeah.. but her face tells us differently. It was considered too poignant for such a funny movie. I am very glad they changed it to the funny funeral ending but I would still love to see it. At the end there was a Psycho type shot with skulls superimposed over Madeline and Helen's faces. More than 30 scenes were cut... big ones... one in particular had Meryl all frozen after spending a whole night in the freezer after Ernest falls asleep on the couch. The maid discovers her when she comes in to work and Ernest makes up some bs story about some Swedish beauty treatment she's trying. He sends the maid home, drags Madeline up the stairs and promises her he will make her his masterpiece. Parts of this scene can be seen in the original Theatrical Trailer.

Death Becomes Her was shot entirely in Los Angeles, Jen. The Greystone Mansion served as Ernest's funeral home, and the Ebell of Los Angeles was the location of Helen's book party. The exterior of Madeline and Ernest's mansion is located at 1125 Oak Grove Avenue in San Marino, but the interior was a set built on a soundstage. The final scene where Helen and Madeline tumble down a set of stairs outside a chapel was filmed at Mount St. Mary's University in Brentwood.

Love this movie! It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, beating out ALIEN 3 and Batman Returns. The CGI looks really good by today's standards and without it, we wouldn't have JURASSIC PARK. The film received mixed reviews but became a box office hit, making over $150 million dollars against a $55 million dollar budget. It's now Considered a cult classic.

I don't think I've seen this since it first came out, but it's been lots of fun revisiting it and seeing all the cast play against type. And if you're going to do horror comedy, you need to go waaaay over the top to make it work. My yardstick for that is Theatre of Blood - which I think you'd like - but this one has a lot of goofy charm.

Speaking of Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, if you've never seen _Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?_ it's definitely one to put on the list. It's a psychological thriller with horror overtones. Bette Davis's performance is particularly disturbing. Goldie Hawn worked with Ingrid Bergman in _Cactus Flower_ and later with Bergman's daughter, Isabella Rossellini. BTW, _Cactus Flower_ (1969) is a delightful romantic farce, and Hawn's Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Love this movie! I remember at the time, Oprah did an interview with Goldie and Meryl during filming. I had the impression that Goldie was the funny actress and Meryl the serious actress at the time. That interview had me in stitches, Meryl(!) was sooo funny that Oprah lost it, and she even made a (lovelingly) joke about how boring Goldie was. And yes, Goldie said that she was a bit boring and that Meryl was the funny one. I totally re-branded Meryl in my mind after that. Ages: Streep 43, Hawn 47, Rossellini 40.

She tried getting Shakespeare, Max Factor and Abraham Lincoln to share their magic... but they all refused (implying she is much older than 71) and so she decided... to kill them.

I just watched the mortuary collection. Which was so excellent. And It’s pretty new but it has a nostalgic vibe! Although if you want a real old one try THE BABY from 1972. Which is bizarre but oddly compelling

A lot of people don't know this, but this film was originally conceived for an episode of the series Tales From the Crypt. Robert Zemeckis worked on that also.

I felt the effects quickly became the object of the film, like "Look what we can do!" The physical humor was interesting, broad but well done, I'd have like it better if it was toned down a bit. It's fine. I've suggested a more recent intentionally cheesy film before, "The Spirit" from 2008. The critics hated it because evidently they never read the source material by Will Eisner. The cast has Samuel L. Jackson as the villain The Octopus and Scarlett Johansson as Silken Floss with Eva Mendes as Sand Saref but in the lead role is Gabriel Macht. It's filmed like "The 300" or "Sin City". You'll like it.

Just seeing you watch the credits and discover who is in this was worth clicking on for! lol. My favorite line is when Goldie calls Meryl a bad actress, lol. Can you believe it that this and maybe The Devil Wears Prada are just about the only reaction videos I can find for a Meryl Streep movie? Not even "Sophie's Choice" which has "reaction video material" written all over it! (i know YOU'VE seen it, Jen!). Anyways, it was great seeing these guys play against type, especially Streep who, at the time, had been known for a string of heavy, dramatic, Oscar-nominated characters, most of whom spoke in various accents. "She Devil" and then this movie was a great attempt to branch out, even though neither movie was well-received at the time. Also happy for Goldie! She just kept working into the 1990s, good for her. She was 47 when this movie was released, which back then meant even more than it does now. (Meryl was 42. I always forget that Goldie was an Oscar winning actress and a huge TV star when Meryl was still at Yale Drama School!) Thanks for such a fun revisit, Jen, really enjoyed watching this with you!

The fake musical in the beginning (Songbird) is supposed to be an adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth, which is about (wait for it) an aging actress obsessed with getting old and being marginalized! It's so funny. I feel like this movie's time has come! The trailers at the time emphasized the effects more than the humor and comments on obsession with youth, so I always felt that's why it didn't make as much money as it should have!

I'm a little late but this movie was made in a weird time for Meryl Streep. In the first half of the 90s, she did several comic films as a response to audiences evidently getting tired of her relentlessly good acting. I think it was 1988's "A Cry in the Dark" that did people in - it was the one where she said, "A dingo ate my baby" in a perfect Australian accent. People were actually making fun of her accents and talent. Weird. So she did a number of comedies for a while in which she either died (this one, and "Defending Your Life") or was at least self-destructive ("Postcards from the Edge"). Oddly enough, it worked. By the later 90s, she could do dramas again. People forgave her for being good. Seems weird today, where she shows up at an awards show and people treat her like a goddess, but there was a time when people were annoyed by her talent and Oscar nominations.

In any case, the film's story is an original script and as for the musical it is supposed to be a musical version of a Tennessee Williams play, the "Sweet Bird of Youth", in which Madeline I'm guessing is supposed to portray Alexandra del Lago.

I love this movie but come to think about it why did Ernest get off so easy I mean to be honest he wasn't a good guy he was the one hopping from Woman to Woman that's pretty much the only criticism I have other than that I love this movie

I would say even Horror-Comedy is a stretch. More of a Comedy-Comedy with dark themes, a Black Comedy at most, in the same theme music as Beetlejuice or Serial Mom.
