*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

I had two Quantum Pulse Baitcaster's reel's. I caught more fish on those 6 to 6 to 1 reel's. Than any other speed reel's. Sharp hooks and 30 pound braid. They won't get off. Never! Quantum for ever! Shawn.

Really good explanation but also if you can’t afford to have a bunch of rods and reels It also helps to keep it in the 6 range so that your reels are more versatile. You can fish any bait on that speed. A lot of times I’ll try to keep my rods in that same aspect but it’s a lot harder to do with them. So in my case I have a couple more rods than reels that I just swap the reel out. For example I fish a lot of night time tournaments in the summer and the fish go deep where I live and that slower presentation is key. Jig/Texas rig or shakey head so I put my jerk bait/topwater/spinnerbait rod down and pick up a rod I like to throw a Texas rig on.

Shimano makes an 8.5 with micro module gearing which has smaller teeth than a 6.8 and has more power too so it just depends on the reel🤷🏻‍♂️

I prefer a high gear ratio most all the time. If want the bait to move slower, I don't reel as fast. The point that torque is reduced for a reel is as gear ratio is increased is undeniable. I change out my handles to compensate for higher gear ratios by using a longer handle. Most handles on 6 or 7 ratio reels are 80 mm. I go up to 96mm on my XG reels and even 105mm for deep cranking. I get all the speed I want and the torque is there also. Basic physics.

As speed goes up torque goes down and as speed goes down torque goes up. Being a mechanic by trade this made total sense to me G. Trying to get 80,000 lbs moving with a higher gear ratio in the drivetrain is hard on everything, just like trying to take a high speed reel and get a 10 pounder moving out of a grass mat that's going to be like a Bill dance hook set and I'm in trouble case. Great job G-Man, keep up the good work.

Imho I think quality spinning reels are superior for single hook/soft plastic/heavy duty presentations. Reason 1, You have a more solid, ergonomic grip on a spinning rod. Your basically making a fist when you hold it. A baitcaster is more unstable because your hand is more open when you hold it. Reason 2, (good) spinning reels usually have longer handles, stronger/simpler gears, higher torque and better drag compared to a low profile baitcaster. There’s a reason why saltwater fisherman use heavy duty spinning reels to catch fish that would eat the biggest bass you’ve ever seen. Reason 3, they handle braided lines much better. Baitcasters require such heavy braid because of spool dig in. With spinning reels you can use a wider variety of lb tests.
@MF-Rell
@MF-Rell Жыл бұрын
I dunno bro. I've not had any issues with 15 to 40 lbs braid digging in. All mine are backed by braid except for my swim bait reel. My leaders are 10 to 25 yards 8lb to 21lb FC.

This is one time I disagree with '' G man ''. For froggin' and flippin' I fight the fish with the rod not the reel and only use the reel to take up line, so I love the fast reels. For cranking the big deep divers, naturally the slower reels give the power more than the fast ones.

All my reels are 6.3 or lower and it never made any sense to have a high gear ratio on a reel anyway. I was taught at a very young age that when you cast and your lure hits the water take up the slack and keep your line tight. This has always worked for me. Great explanation and thank you sir for everything that you have done for bass fishing!! :)

I had a 7.1 Abu Garcia I think it was several years ago. I never had a reel I disliked any more. Even a model A bomber was like pulling a toe sack through the water. All my bass reels are Chronarch 100-B's, BPV's and chronarch 50 MG's. I have several of them some still in the box. I think they range from 5.1 to 6.1 ratio.They do everything I need them to do. Listen to what this man is saying. Don't get caught up in whats hot and whats new. I'm 72 years old and used to catch bass on a Zebco 33 with a 5 1/2 ft. rod. Good tackle helps but it don't make you a smarter fisherman. Stay simple and stay focused and contented,

I’ve been trying to tell fishing buddy’s for years that this is the case. I’d rather use too low a ratio than too high. I have one 7:1 ratio Speed Spool because it was a gift. I used BB1NG’s back in the 90’s and was never overwhelmed by a big sally because of gear ratio (4.4:1). I learned to baitcast with an Ambassadeur 5000D (3:1 ratio). Sometimes we “improve” ourselves right out of catching fish. Once again, Gerald is the soothe sayer from Alabama.

This very good to learn at 16. Being brought up into bass fishing all I’ve ever seen is 8.5 and even 10.0 and how good it is to have those but I have older family members etc that have much slower reels and think that even my 7.3s are too fast. I’ve never understood why they found it weird but this helps a lot. This is something I just never would have learned.

Actual physics and math is not involved in your point of view. The gear ratio is only part of the equation. The spool duze matters greatly. 8.0 reels are very capable of turning fish. I edited to state the basic that I thought we all knew....the reel manages line. The rod casts the lure and works the fish, not the reel.

KVD likes his high speed reels. Everyone has an opinion. Maybe for GMan who if he only had one lure, a brown jig, torque is everything. For KVD and open water he wants fast to catch up to a fish that runs at the boat with a crankbait in his mouth or to take in the slack with a jerkbait. There is no absolute right answer.
