Brahms's oft-quoted reverence for his musical heritage was something of a two-edged sword for the composer. In an age that strove constantly for heightened dramatic expression through opera and descriptive music, he stuck firmly to the well-tried Classical genres of the symphony and the concerto, and to chamber music. His counterpoint was enriched by his knowledge of Bach, his formal practices founded upon those of Beethoven. And yet when in 1853 Schumann declared him to be 'He that should come' (by which he meant Beethoven's successor), this placed upon Brahms a public burden which intensified his private belief that he was unworthy to fill the great man's shoes. Though it seems likely that Brahms composed over 100 chamber works, a mere two dozen survived his ruthless self-criticism to attest to his mastery in this most intimate and exacting of genres.

The first sonata seems like a foreshadowing of the tragic events that occur soon thereafter in her life.. I almost started to cry. A little comfort comes in the second movement. The final movement is the triumph over tragedy. It reminds me so much of the Tchaikovsky Piano Trio that I requested to be played at my memorial. (I'm 80 years old) I didn't know until later that it was in fact composed for the funeral of Nicholai Rubenstein, the pianist brother of Anton Rubenstein. The third movement of the second sonata is equally heroic. What a superb recording of these masterpieces.

So much virtuosity, so much artistry, such an amazing communication between the two! How tragic that they only had 18 months of married life before the hammer fell. I can only feel immense gratitude for the truly wonderful music they recorded together before that happened.
