*Click to activate the English subtitles for the presentation* (00:00-04:55). For the English speakers (Google Translate): The choral (Lutheran hymn) has an important place in the work of Bach. ‘Cantor musices’, organist, responsible for composing a lot of music for worship, Bach devoted most of his creative activity to the service of the Reformed Church. Deeply believing, it was for him the natural expression of his faith. Now, the choir, which he had to illustrate and to make the assembly sing, is the fundamental spiritual exercise of the faithful and expresses all the great dogmas of religion. The chorale is therefore not for Bach a simple musical theme, but a means of expression always closely associated with a precise theological or devotional notion, whether or not the words are expressed. It is therefore to the extent that it conveys a liturgical text that the chorale is a basic element of Lutheran cult music, of Bach in particular. It thus appears as a genre, not as a codified musical form; and as such, it implies works of various forms. Sung in unison by the assembly, the choir is also, in polyphony, sung by the church choir. Hence the many harmonizations that have been achieved for this purpose, and gathered in collections. It was published in four volumes, from 1784 to 1787, all of the choirs harmonized by J. S. Bach. Out of 371 pieces from various sources, 186 are specifically four-part harmonizations intended for the choir (the others mainly coming from cantatas). Because of its spiritual weight for the faithful, the choir appears many times in cantatas and passions. It oversees the musical development by sectioning the story, by bringing in a reflection of a largely community nature; it is then generally harmonized in four parts and discreetly supported by the instruments, unless it is cited, preceded and surrounded by a melodic refrain, stated or in unison (choir of the "Watchman", cantata BWV 140) , or in four voices (choral Jesus that my joy remains, cantata 147). Or else it intervenes as a theme in a polyphonic choir (entrance choir of the Passion according to Saint Matthew). But it is above all on the organ that ‘the choir’ offers Bach the greatest possibilities for development. The liturgical organist indeed has to prelude, accompany, play interludes, comment on the choirs of the day. Hence these Choral Preludes, or more simply Chorals for organ, which set out the theme of the hymn by adorning and coating it with a commentary that paraphrases it and musically emphasizes its spiritual intentions, poetic images and religious symbols. This sound commentary takes many forms in Bach's organ work. The Cantor penetrates the meaning of the verb (the word of God) which it translates: under its pen the harmonies compose a pictorial language, easy to grasp: it describes using formulas, expressions, themes: complex system which he took from his predecessors, but developed to the point of creating, in his choirs, as in his cantatas for that matter, an idiom that belongs only to him.

"Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day!"

Johann Sebastian Bach did not devote his services to the Reformed Church. Bach was a life-long member of the Evangelical (read Lutheran) Church, and the congregations that he served as Cantor in were of the Confessional Lutheran variety. That Bach's personal convictions were Lutheran has been verified and, if you'd like further information on the subject, can be explored in the volume "J.S. Bach and Scripture: Glosses from the Calov Bible Commentary" Introduction, Annotations, and Editing by Robin A. Leaver. Thanks, though, for putting together this excellent video - it is really a great compilation! Cordially yours,

I grew up Catholic, so I've been aware of the organ for a long time, like 50 years. That being said, it's only of recent that I've begun to find a new fascination with this instrument. It's probably because of the size and power of the sound, but I was distracted by other things for a long time. I'm a rock musician from way back, so I love a good, loud building, but before strapping on a guitar, it's why I first played drums in the fife and drum corps; you could FEEL that thunderous sound reverberate through the building, even inside and out. But to tell you the truth, there is nothing like ten thousand pipes blasting the walls of some cathedral in London on a chill February morning before I head off to confront the world. A godsend. Ginormous! Amen.

Beautiful. As a pianist, I like to occasionally switch up the instruments that I listen to. While I also love listening to Haydn's symphonies, Beethoven's string quartets, Schubert's String quintet (amazing work, D956, check it out) nothing beats Bach's organ works to me. Not even his piano music is quite to this level if you ask me, and a reference recording this truly is!
@badhairdye2 жыл бұрын
Very nice, but Bach wrote no piano music. 'Clavier' was the term used for 'keyboard' in Bach's time, but Bach did not care for the then-contemporary piano, which developed only in the latter third of the 18th century. Much of his keyboard music, and Baroque keyboard works generally, are often played on piano, but, as you know, to do so requires a certain training if the artist intends to remain faithful to 18th century sound. Bach's organ works are rarely played on piano, however, as they require pedal obbligato which the piano (obviously) cannot manage.
Profound gratitude to Classical Music/ Reference Recording for providing this vast, immeasurable treasure trove of Bach's organ works. What better way to pay homage to the greatest composer of all time than with 9 glorious hours of his music? (Not to mention the 7+ hours in Part 1!). Keep the soundtracks coming! Subscribed.

Many thanks for this. I've been looking for collections of his organ works, starting from Teldeck and ending with Tom Koopman's organ recodrings on youtube, but the latter get being deleted here, so this looks like the most prominent organ collection, in one place now. Excellent organist, too. 10 hours of prayer and contemplation in parallel with work is always major relief. Hope this video doesn't get banned here like Koopman's recordings.

@@Piflaser I know Messiaen and Berg, both no doubt eminent composers. Neither do I think that every work must sound like Bach and Handel. That being said, I know of no two other composers who have exerted such a defining influence on the development of Western music. In Bach's case particularly, his influence has been immeasurable. Subsequent composers drew from his works and owe him an unpayable debt.

Beautiful interpretation, beautiful instrument and perfect registration. However at times the beat is not very steady, which somewhat distracts from the `infinity' of this music. Musical 'sentences' l;ack structure and become unclear: more subtlety on accentuation and phrasing would help to speak directly to the heart, which is what beautiful music should do.

When I lived in Des Moines, IA in 1985 the American Guild of Organists put on a "Bach-a-thon" to raise money for the Des Moines Interfaith Food Bank. It ran from 9 AM -9 PM Saturday, then 3 PM - 9 PM on Sunday. People paid $10 for a two-day hand stamp, The hourly concerts ran hourly from 00 to :50, leaving 10 minutes for change of artists and audience flow. A large amount of money was raised for the foodbank. Not all hours were organ performers. Some excellent Chamber Orchastras and Choirs performed and Sunday wrapped up with N astounding performance of the B-minor Mass.

Sorry, but there are no 'chorals' in Bach's music. 'Chorals' is not an English word. What you have called 'chorals' are called 'chorale preludes' in English. I suspect you have attempted to translate the French 'le choral' into English, but even in French the correct term is 'le chorale' or better, 'le chorale prelude,' not 'le choral' (whatever that is.) Nevertheless, it is a cultural boon that you have posted here most of Bach's chorale preludes, and we thank you.
