Yes YOU have good ears. I am fortunate enough to own this set of CD, a most powerful, scintillating, thoroughly convincing, compelling authoritative interpretation of Robert Schumann's great 4 Symphonies, nothing comes this close. This historical recording have set a shining, if not everlasting highest standard for Schumann Symphonies. Every pieces are breathtakingly conducted to a perfection, an imaging of the scores are just so wonderful. Great milestone in the interpretation of Schumann's score which dwarfed all other maestros of his time. Listen to the majestic finale of Symphony No.2 when trumpets shout out triumphantly pointing towards the heaven accompanied by most grand beatings of the timpani, it is a tear-jerker. Bravo Maestro thank you so much for your great Music, may you rest in Heaven.

It was my great good fortune to have met and worked with Maestro Sawallisch at EMI. Invariably courteous and smiling, he was a gentleman, unassuming and, despite his international stature and reputation, a man without attitude. A man to respect. This shines through the remarkable recordings he made, of which the Schumann set is simply a delight, illustrating the musicality and understanding he brought to the podium. With many thanks for sharing this.

I’ve never heard Schumann, with his huge enthusiasm and over-abundance of orchestral ideas, so finely executed by any orchestra. Sawallisch interprets Schumann in Schumann’s way, adhering strictly to the interestingly scrupulous dynamic markings for different parts in the symphonies, creating a sonically masterful experience!!

A personal view: I would rather hear a symphony by Schumann than his contemporaries on account of the pure joy of music making, the startling originality, and the spontaneous warmth of feeling that shines out. I admire and love the Brahms symphonies, but you are always aware of the work that went into them. Their impeccable good taste can become tiresome. Not so with Schumann.

1/2/3/4 are equally superior as like Brahms 1/2/3/4 and are very beautifully romantic. Swellfish's recordings of 1/2/3/4 may be the first class for several centuries till end of Classical music (?) because of clarities, straight forward interpretations, abundant romanticism inside, and passion for Spirits of Rhine.

Yes the Karajan is a classic set. It divides opinion though. He is pretty much persona non grata these days. His conducting style & aesthetic approach to music being irrelevant. It's astonishing. And deeply ignorant. He was indulged & over recorded - but there are amongst his 200 or so a significant number of high quality recordings which have stood the test of time.
