Among the noteworthy works, we can mention the Hungarian Fantasy, the Totentanz, and, standing prominently in the foreground, the two concertos. The Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major was composed in 1839. It underwent significant revisions in 1849, so that both concertos, in their final versions, are contemporaneous. The intrinsic musical quality of this work is often considered superior to that of the previous concerto. Indeed, the fusion of the various sections into a single whole is much more advanced here. Similarly, the principle of thematic transformation is employed with greater mastery. As for the development - practically absent in the First Concerto - it takes on an important role and even allows for ingenious thematic superimpositions. It is the first theme, by far the most significant, that gives this concerto its captivating atmosphere, thanks to its delightful harmonic progressions and expressive melodic contour. This theme unfolds throughout the introduction in an admirably poetic environment, creating a sort of pleasant torpor. Suddenly, the theme of the first section bursts in, giving way to energetic and resolute accents. However, it reappears very softly a little further along, in the dreamy key of D-flat major. Towards the middle of the score, at the Allegro deciso, still in the same key, we find a clever superimposition of the main themes from the first section and the scherzo. This passage is brilliant, vigorous, and strikingly elegant. The penultimate section, Marziale un poco meno Allegro, features the return of the initial theme, transformed into a martial march, which is somewhat in poor taste. Fortunately, the poetic and dreamy atmosphere from the beginning quickly returns before yielding to a final Allegro animato, concluding this superb concerto with great brilliance. The Richter/Kondrashin team comes very close to offering us THE definitive version of the Piano Concerto No. 2. This is a free, open, and noble version in which Richter engages in an intense struggle to delve into the text at its deepest level. The orchestra displays strength and grandeur, triumphal yet capable of achieving remarkable cantabile. The sound of the remastered edition is fabulous.
