Never has the tension of this symphony erupted with such violence as under Mravinsky's direction. The theme of fate resounds relentlessly with each occurrence. You must hear the pizzicatos in the third movement, where the strings transform into a sort of fantastical balalaika. The Symphonies No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64, and No. 6 in B minor "Pathétique," Op. 74, performed by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Yevgeny Mravinsky in 1960, have been the absolute pinnacle of Tchaikovsky's discography for over thirty years. It seems that Yevgeny Mravinsky, who was the conductor and the soul of the Leningrad Philharmonic for nearly fifty years, was the custodian of the Tchaikovsky tradition. Born in 1903 in Saint Petersburg, Tchaikovsky's own city, this music was almost part of his very being, to the point where he seemed to have fully identified with it. It is said that perfection is not of this world. The wise man who formulated this brilliant precept clearly did not know these three symphonies by Mravinsky. Whether one listens to these works with the score in hand or immerses oneself in darkness, eyes closed, standing (trying not to conduct along) or sitting (trying to stay seated), alone or with friends, one is struck by a powerful truth: this is everything Tchaikovsky wrote, and nothing he did not write. A summit. -- For your information, KZbin, in addition to compressing the audio file, has reduced the dynamic impact of our mastering by 46%. Mravinsky e la Filarmonica di Leningrado sono sempre assolutamente fantastici !!!

Mravinsky's interpretations of Tchaikovsky's Symphonies 4, 5, 6 are definite, indeed. A conductor who actually paid attention to subtle, detailed dynamics markings indicated in Tchaikovsky's scores, who didn't demand every bar to played with constant espressivo and banal melodrama as it is often played, and who certainly understood what "Allegro con fuoco" meant in finale of 4th Symphony.

I know that the 5th and 6th symphonies are commonly referred to as his best symphonies, and maybe they are, but this one is my absolute favorite of his 👏

Yes, the reason we offer this edition is that it's possible to compare its sound quality with that of DG or MELODYA. For this, uncompressed, non-standardized sound is preferable: we recommend Qobuz or our website. classicalmusicreference.com/ // www.qobuz.com/

I have them.Mavrinsky was a great conductor.Fate is Tchaicovsky leit-motif as in Francesca de Rimini, the Second piano concerto, particularly the first movement and the sixth symphony, his testament.

Great performance, lot's of distortions in the last movement

Yes, the fourth is the least well-recorded of the last three, with some saturation on the brass. But nothing too shocking, the interpretation is so exceptional that this technical aspect is no more than a detail.

I've opened this guy's "product" in a waveform editor. They just boost the amplitude (volume) beyond the original recording dynamic range, thus crashing the natural peak response. The result is the same recording only louder and compressed

You've got it all wrong. Do you have a Qobuz subscription?
I think you exaggerated in the bass in this remastered.

I recommend a Qobuz subscription cutt.ly/EebZIodj. If you don't have a Qobuz account, then listen on KZbin Music cutt.ly/YebZO2dE, it's always better than here.
