How I have been refilling shocks for 40 years and saving quite a bit of money. One small mistake regarding the oil drained out, I should have said that it started life as 10 grade but ends up at about 5 or less, which is why the shock becomes pretty useless. Replace with new 10 grade to get back to original, ot thicker, 20 or 30 for increased damping and less body lean on corners.

Many shock absorbers are oil filled and then pressurized with nitrogen to keep the oil from aerating. Also, the best oil for a shock absorber is one that keeps viscosity in all temps. Otherwise you wind up with a shock that rides hard when it gets cold out.

Did this to a stock shock to an volvo 240. Went great! used 15/40 oil(alittle mix with 10/40 and liiittle old oil left in the shock). But, its rly "tardy" to pull out but when compressing it dosnt feel very stiff... Am gonna get another shockabsorber and compare, but it kinda feels "loose"... Anyhows, great vid! u used to work in a breakers yard and a colleague cut through a shock absorber with a stihl saw and it literally exploded. i was told by the owner that on certain cars it can be extremely dangerous but i guess this is just the oil filled ones as there is no pressure. gas ones can be anywhere from 100-300psi which could easily blow your hand apart - make sure they are oil!!!

I always grease up the end of my drill bit and have somebody hold my shopvac nozzle up to the drill hole to catch the swarf. I refill with ATF as it swells the seals and makes it last longer. The seals for the rod allow a thin film of oil to pump by and the shock will have less oil than new from the factory. I fill them up and remove the air and just top them off and never have a problem. I TIG weld a nut to the hole and use a screw with fiber washer to seal it for next time. I top mine off about once per year.

Hi Hensen, Interesting video. I have some shocks on an old 2CV (I think they are just oil shocks) I will drain them and measure the oil that comes out but wondered roughly how much there should be in a shock so that when I drain them and see how much oil there is currently it might give me an idea as to whether they have leaked in the past and the seals are shot - so probably not worth refilling. Useful video, thank you. Chris

No point in refilling if they are leaking. You will have to get new ones. You will always find something to fit. Just measure the fully out and fully in length and get ones from something else. You could even get air shocks for a few extra quid.

I wonder if you have ever cleaned a non-rebuildable shock and gotten the old crud out and replaced the oil afterwards, and if so is there a way to determine how much oil to replace it with. Thanks for the video, I always wondered if there was a way to replace oil in shocks that don't leak.

Hi there, i watched this video and tried to do this on a steering shock absorber. The shock seemed to be a oil filled and not gas filled. When i drilled the hole the oil sprayed a bit as i were drilling but nothing dramatic, so im pretty sure its a oil filled as if were a gas it should be a lot worse. So, i then get a 30w oil and sent the shock so a guy could weld a nut over the hole so i can close it with a bolt, and when i want to refill again i just open it and close it again. Well this guy opened the hole a little more and there was a little rubber on the inside and when he was opening a bigger hole he also drilled that rubber, and i dont know if this is bad or not?? Why? When i get back with the shock i refilled it with the new oil, but i got a leak trough the weld beads. I then filled the weld with epoxy jb weld. The problem is i kept getting air inside the shock when closed. I fill with oil and the shock makes a good motion(stiff) trough the travel, but when i close it and pump it it starts to make movement stop as air i sttopping the shock travel and getting soft...Do you have any ideas to fix this? Thanks.
@Hensen1954
@Hensen1954 10 жыл бұрын
Maybe if you pump it more the air will be dislodged. I have never had a problem when I do the work as in the video.
@sasacata
@sasacata 10 жыл бұрын
Hensen1954 . I believe the problem is with the plastic bag inside, its filled with air and works as air stop or a space filling as no gas is needed in that application. for example my plastic bag was pierced, so when the shock was compressing the oil was taking the space in the pierced plastic bag making the shock lock like air was still trapped inside. so here is a warning to you all ou there, do not pierce that plastic bag or you will throw a shock out. it is imposssible then to make the shock work without that. i will try to get a hold of another one so i can try again.

a few questions, does the hole have to be at the bottom ? since i will try this on an old shock absorber with a slight leak is it safe to add oil till half of the reserve tube assuming the pressure tube is fully filled ? if so, i plan to drill in the middle so if oil overflows then the reserve is half filled. how much pressure is there in the reserve cavity during operation, reason i ask is how i will seal the hole if i have no welding equipment. thanks!
@Hensen1954
@Hensen1954 9 жыл бұрын
Greetings, I drill at the bottom because the oil is there, and it does not interfere with the up and down movement of the dust cover / shroud. I think every shock I have done has had about half the amount in the oil can I use in the video, so I am guessing an eighth of a pint. You dont have to weld up the hole, you can tap and bolt or just use a rubber plug / cover, held in place with a sturdy jubilee clip. There is pressure in the inner chamber when the piston is in motion, but that is in comparison to the second chamber, not between the inside and outside of the shock. Experiment as you wish, you dont have to worry, its not filled with dynamite !!
@johnadams3115
@johnadams3115 9 жыл бұрын
Hensen1954 . thanks for the prompt response. i will experiment on soldering a shrader valve and see if it works too if i pump in nitrogen or maybe just air. the reason i asked some of the questions is that i will have to install it in the car to see if it works well and it's the coil over type so not that easy to install/uninstall. thanks again.
@johnadams3115
@johnadams3115 9 жыл бұрын
john adams was experimenting on this, and found out that if you put too much oil you won't be able to compress the piston rod all the way down to the bottom at least by hand. so i temporarily sealed the hole, rubber and jubilee clip is fine, and checked that the rod bottoms otherwise who knows where all that pressure would go,

If you weld it with the hole facing up, the oil will be lower down, so it does not catch fire easily. However, sometimes, if you dont weld quickly, the gas catches fire, but it is nothing more than the flame from a match - no problem at all. They dont explode, lol.

+Bryan Foat Please read other comments, however, why add extra oil for towing. Do you put extra oil on your engine to drive up hills ??
@boosted4runner86
@boosted4runner86 8 жыл бұрын
because as soon as you put a caravan on any car it lowers the ass off the car even if the ball weight is low. going up a hill has nothing to do with it and i aint stupid i was just asking a question as atm i have air ride shocks that can be pumped up when towing but you would think if you could put oil shocks on it would be a more stable ride and less risk of an air line blowing and potentially causing an accident. my question is can you add more oil for more ride hight or would you just bleed the oil out and put a thicker grade oil in?
@Hensen1954
@Hensen1954 8 жыл бұрын

I tried tapping with 1/8” NPT (tapered pipe thread in US) it barely works as the shock wall is so thin. A plug and epoxy putty (quicksteel) will hold the plug and help it seal tho, which is a lot simpler than welding, albeit uglier. If you want more damping use thicker oil, not more oil, the shock should be full already as it is.

im pretty sure thats the nitrogen added to keep the oil from foaming and this same tactic will work on those shocks if you have a nitrogen tank just compress the shock then set the regulator to about 5 lbs (no higher or you might damage the shock) and air it up to full extention just before welding it up. just be careful when drilling it at first, hydraulic fluid could squirt out with tremendous force ... it should be zero lbs of pressure in the shock fully extended unless its a precharged shock but always protect the eyes. If you inspect one of these shocks you will see where the factory punched a small hole to add the nitrogen then sealed it up with a spot weld .

Theres always a bur when drilling what about the risk of swarf getting in the valves? Shox don't affect body roll in corners, they will affect the momentary roll when the car attempts to move but will allow full body roll as the shock is weighted, there is no spring to support weight shift just a reduction in the speed of the roll. Shox are to dampen the resonance of the springs not hold a car up.

I took my car (Dodge Neon 05) to a car repair shop to check the shock absorbers, and they offered me to repair them, because they were apparently locked. The struts with the shocks were dismantled, and the manager told me that he repaired them, changing the oil. He showed me that now they could be pressed down with a hand, and this didn't seem to me to be right. They installed and I left the place. The result is that now the car is bouncing on the springs of the struts, they have no damping. Also I notice that the suspension is lower behind than it was before. The driving is unbearable, the car bounces on the springs with the minimum road bump. When I asked the person in charge of repairing the shock absorbers if he had assembled them with a lot of pressure, he replied to me: "Since it's a small car I did not put too much pressure in the shock absorvers." How is this possible? How can you regulate the shock absorber with much or little pressure? Pouring less oil? He offered to increase the pressure on the shock absorbers again. What should they do? Increase the amount of oil? According to what I understood in your video, you have to pour the same amount of oil that comes out, no less, no more. Is that right? I have to go back there next wednesday, I would really appreciate your advice.
@Hensen1954
@Hensen1954 7 жыл бұрын
Greetings. I looked at the Neon shocks / struts. They are only 71 dollars new for a pair, so very cheap. Anyway, back to yours. Something is very wrong. Yes, you must use the correct amount of oil. To make them stronger or softer, you change the thickness of the oil - and just a little bit thicker makes a huge difference. Try squirting water out of a syringe, then try treacle !! Nearly impossible. If the car bounces like you say, its bordering on very dangerous, as well as uncomfortable. The Neon is not a heavy car - about 2700 lbs - so for road use I would go for oil rated at straight 15 grade. However, I was not sure about the shocks being "locked " ?? Does that mean seized ?? The situation does not seem logical to me with the above information, that the repair shop told you.

Now I'm not sure if that's a valid test, at least with this car. I am not moving the car too much until the problem solves. It is unbearable the bouncing. They told me to go tomorrow to fix it. What I want to know if they can restore the shocks increasing the pressure, specially the height, since I see that the suspension Is lower than before and that makes the springs to work in excess. By the way, I appreciate your advice of buying a new pair of shocks, but I live in Venezuela, a country turned in a new Cuba, and shocks and all car parts are very expensive. I am doing this as a temporary solution. So, my final question is: can be solved? Can they increase the pressure of the shocks pouring more oil assuming they didn't fill the shock with all of the oil it should contain? I got the feeling that the manager wanted to save in oil, because of the price he charged me. Thanks in advance for your answer.

Read below. Many ways, but I weld it closed. You can use a plug or bung, up to you. But, I always use a blob of weld.

Well, I only used straight oil of a given viscosity. But would never use old oil when its so cheap to get the3 good stuff.

@Hensen1954 Great video, thanks for sharing. If your ever interested I am sure you could easily do some voice over work, you sound remarkably like one of my favorite actors, Hugh Laurie. I am sure you've heard that before. By the way check out "The Night Manager" if you haven't already, great mini series.

if trying this see first comment, weld nut over hole and cap with a bolt while no oil is in the shock. if you have a sealed steel pipe, fill it with oil and simultaneously seal it while heating it to several thousand degrees, what you are likely building is a pipe bomb....................
