Have a teak table & chairs by Wegner for 66 years. Never needed to use place mats. It was heat & waterproof. I did oil it often with teak oil & a little turpentine. Have not taken care of it for many years now and would like to restore it to the waterproof & heat seal it had. It is in almost perfect condition. I am old 99!

Thank you Henrik for a very informative video, you have inspired me to do refinish my table which is the same as yours and some 40 years old. I have one question namely how would you darken the teak legs of the table, mine are very smooth and light in color. with thanks. Gerry

Henrik, you did such a lovely job on your Teak Dining Table. We have one almost exactly the same. I have never refinished anything before but you made it look so easy. I am thinking about trying to do our Teak Dining Table and was wondering how much time will it take from beginning to end? I have all of the necessary tools that you have in your video to do it myself but I'm just trying to find the courage to press on. I will need to understand how much time it will take to refinish and how long you should wait after finishing before you can use your dining table again? Our entire home has nothing but solid Teak Furniture from Demark and if I am successful with refinishing our table then I would be able to refinish our other furniture. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us. Out of all the videos on KZbin your video is absolutely the best! Also, could you please confirm the types of sandpaper you used and in what order so I can make sure I wrote them down correctly.

Thank you for your very nice compliments. Very much appreciated. First - please make sure its solid. Not veneered. you are welcome to send a photo. And i will let you know. 2nd. We used a festool sander setup which means we could do it indoor, in the dining room and did not have to move it outside or cover. It took from start to finish 38 minutes. We used 80 grid and 120 grid sand paper. Also we only did the top of the table, and the leaf. One thing, most furniture made in Denmark in teak are lacquer treated. Either sprayed, carpet, or with a roller. The ones with not too much lacquer are the ones that benefit from constant teak oil. (And of course the ones that are oiled only) From now on this table, which we re-finished is oiled only on the top, and lacquered on the base and the bottom. This means it really needs to be cleaned with the white Zinolin more often, and get the Zinolin teak oil 4 times per year. BUT- it also means it has the best possible look and feel on the top. Send me some photos of your project. And i will try to help you out. Thanks again for your comments

Henrik Hundevad Henrik, thank you so much for your quick response. All of our furniture is 100% solid Teak. My mother fell in love with solid Teak Furniture from Demark and would buy nothing else. It was the best investment because the furniture is well made and will literally last a lifetime if taken care of properly. I will sort out a picture tonight and send it to you as I would like to put my two leaves in. I just had tile installed in my kitchen so I thought I would do it outside under our covered patio. The weather is lovely now so I won't have to worry about rain, wind or extreme heat. I'm going to the store now to find the Teak oil you mentioned. We have been using the one from the House of Denmark all these years. Hope I can find it. Once again, thank you so much. This will be a lovely Christmas present for my 87 year old dad and 79 year old mum.

I just came across your video and had the same question as a few others regarding whether or not my table is solid teak or has a veneer. How would I go about sending you a photo to verify for me? Very much appreciated!
@henrikhundevad34997 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary. We used 80 to start an 120 to finish. Higher grids are better for polished and more shiny finishes. Teak looks best with a more flat finish. Important to use the Zinolin Teak Oil- let it dry and then re-apply. The outdoor ones leave too much on the surface. By it at almost any Scandinavian Furniture store, Or ATG, now "the mine"

Hi there. I have this exact table i had just bought used and wish to refinish myself, especially after the quotes from various local furniture refinishers of $1300 to $1700. No way! The top is quite similarly worn as yours with a cup stain on top. 1. Looking at your video, it doesn't seem necessary to strip the finish. In what case would i need to do so? 2. How would i get rid of that cup stain? Would the stain remover you shown in the video be appropriate? Apply after the first sanding? 3. This would be my first wood refinish project. Is it fairly simple with the tools you used on your video or should i practice on some small cheap table i might find cheap online? Thank you!
@henrikhundevad34994 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian. If your top is solid, you can sand until your stain is gone. No need to strip before you start sanding. The cleaner we use, is not a stain remover. More like an advance Windex, that is ok to use on wood. If you have a good orbital sander, its not hard. If your table is solid you have pretty far to go before you do any damage, that cannot be fixed. Good luck.

Hello. Great video. Thanks for putting it together. Only thing I want to mention is the man in the video doing the sanding has quite severe "allergy shiners" (dark spots around his eyes), which are indicative of a chronic allergic reaction. Just FYI. Thanks again.

I have a teak dining room table made in Denmark with extensions that come out each side of the table. I love the versatility of the table and the look. The extensions still look very good, not glossy, but smooth and clean. However the table top is pretty beaten up after about 40 years of wear and tear. It has stains, scratches, glass rings. I think the table had a veneer finish. How can I know for sure if it has a veneer finish? But, If it is veneer I understand I should be very careful when sanding it. Can I still use an orbital sander? What Sand grit would you recommend? How will I know when I have sanded it enough? Will it sand down to the gray appearance?
@henrikhundevad34994 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan..I think may be you have a dutch leaf table? Those are probably veneer. If you are not sure. send me a picture and i let you know. Sanding veneered surfaces is tricky. I would hand sand it. in the grain direction carefully with 80 grid sand paper to 120 or 150. Carefully being a keyword. Better very carefully. Once you are through it becomes really tricky to repair. You sand and see nothing- then boom one more stroke and you see the sewing lines under the veneer..oops..and that is what you have from now on. Some people like to make large s lines with a soft pencil. Then sand until the line is done. Then evaluate and repeat if yo think it's ok. it gives you a little guide to not remove too much. There is no pre-set enough. Depends how thick the veneer was to begin with and how much they sanded off at the factory. And that could wary a lot through the day or the week. Hope it helps you out- keyword you mentioned yourself. Very carefully.. And i would not use any mechanical device. Just hand sand. Carefully.

@@henrikhundevad3499 Assuming i am able to hand sand it correctly, do I proceed with hard surface cleaner, water, very light sand, then teak oil applications?
@henrikhundevad34994 жыл бұрын
@@janschick9493 Cleaning is for getting dust out before oiling. The water part is sometimes for raising the poors and then a quick re-sand. I would skip the water part and go to teak oil. Zinolin is now NordiCare. So look for NordiCare teak oil or Zinolin teak oil. Good luck.

Hi, great video and advice. I've owned a teak dining room table for over 30 yrs and recently got it out of storage. I cleaned it down with mineral spirits and 1/8 parts ammonia & water to remove grime and streaks that started showing when I used a detergent. I also hand sanded the top (220 & 440 grit to help remove the grime) and some parts of the table top are now lighter than others. I am ready to add a layer of teak oil, but am uncertain if I'll have a uniform appearance once I add it? Wondering if I need to uniformly sand it - or OK to go ahead. Would appreciate your thoughts?

Hi Henrik, awesome video! Very informative. We have a beautiful teak dining room table with leaves. Unfortunately, it's veneer with solid edges. The leaves look like they have a glossy finish. But the rest of the table is dull and the finish is gone. Do you suggest carefully sanding the veneer or using a paint remover? Can we use the danish teak oil instead of a wipe on clear matte finish product? Thank you very much for any insight. You are a true craftsman!
@henrikhundevad34994 жыл бұрын
Sanding veneer tables can be tricky. The teak veneer is not very thick. You sand and all of a sudden you can see the sewing lines from the underside come through- and no way back. On teak if you use too fine a sand paper it becomes to glossy and shiny. One trick is to make pencil lines and then only sand till they are gone. Sand with your hands and a sanding block. Sand, look, new pencil lines. Repeat. Then clean it well and apply teak oil. Now Zinolin has changed its name to NordiCare. Same stuff. Prettier bottle.

Great video! I have just been given an old G Plan table which has been varnished. I shall sand it, then use a teak oil. I am in the UK so will just have to see what brands of oil are available. Do you use a particular brand? Thankyou
@organic32805 жыл бұрын
You're right. Teak deserves a proper oil finish. I think that poly or varnish ruins a beautiful teak piece, whether it's veneer or solid.

Thank you very much for the great video! I have a similar table by Nordic Furnishings, Ontario Canada that I want to refinish. It's solid wood. How can I be sure it is teak? If it's not and I sand it, will I have to stain it? If it's teak, how do I know if it's lacquered of oiled? It has some scratches and a scuff that left a light spot. Looks like there was a stain someone tried your clean and sanded toomuch, you can feel the irregularity on the wood and see it is scuffed . I put teak oil on the Light spot and it did not change the color. Any ideas? Any other brand of teak oil you can recommend? Zionolin is not available around here or on Amazon.Thank you for your advise!

Try themine.com Zinolin is available there. Else most Scandinavian furniture stores carry it. I would imagine they would be happy to ship it. centuryhouseinc.com f.ex. To make sure its teak? Send a picture maybe..If you sand it, and its not teak, you may not want to use teak oil. If you sand it to the bare wood, its not important if it was lacquered, because its not any more. Hope this helps..Good luck.

This is great information! What grit of sandpaper did you use? Does steel wool and turpentine have the same affect between standings?
@henrikhundevad34998 жыл бұрын
A lot of people like steel wool. It can leave little metal pieces that rust. Therefore I prefer not to use it. Turpentine works well. I just have become really happy with this Hard surface cleaner. For grit- try to end on 120.
@henrikhundevad34996 жыл бұрын
I am not a big fan of steel wool for this kind of purpose. May leave little pieces of steel, that later on rust.

No not after the second sanding. The water raises the poors. Then the second sanding. Then just brush or vacuum.
@henrikhundevad34996 жыл бұрын
No - the cleaning with water is to get rid of dust- and it raises the poors a bit. easier to get in the second round. kind of like when you shave.
