Refinished Card Catalog with Natural Quartersawn Oak Wood

I found this antique card catalog at an estate sale and wanted to bring it back to life without painting it. I stripped away the old finish, sanded it down to natural wood, and refinished it with stain and a clear protective finish.

When you sanded it, did you get all the old stain off? Or could you, I mean? I'm a big fan of red oak with tung oil and oil-based poly, at least on floors. I've been tempted to buy old oak pieces and strip them. But I am always worried that I wouldn't be able to get the old stain off.

Because oak has such deep wood grain, some of the coloring from the old stain does stay in that grain. I guess you could sand the heck out of it and get rid of most of that, but I don't mind the look. Once you strip off the old oil finish, it really is pretty easy to sand back the stain to natural wood (or at least close to it)
