YAY! Thank you so much, I needed this - I've always used Annie Sloan but it's kinda hard to get around me... glad to know there are others that may even be superior to that one! Thank you - you did a great job!!!

Is there a price breakdown? I rent so I’m looking for something that will be able to move with us if we have to leave this year but if it isn’t too expensive then I can always donate/toss it.

I haven't done a recent cost breakdown. A reader did in December '23 and said it was about $300 for supplies where she was located.

What would happen if you finished OVER the white wash? Like for the paint wash or oil stain method?
@RefreshLiving
@RefreshLiving 7 күн бұрын
You can finish with a clear coat over all of them which would add durability but wouldn't change the color in any way as long as you use a water based topcoat. I wouldn't recommend topcoating with oil based topcoat as it yellows over time and will make the whitewash look pretty gross.

How do you secure it to the wall of your house? I’m concerned about predators tipping it over
@RefreshLiving
@RefreshLiving 7 күн бұрын
I used two screws (one on each side through the siding and into wood of the house). It's also screwed the the base in several places. We don't have any sort of big predators though, so you might have to do more depending on the animals you're dealing with

Thanks for sharing this very good test of cabinet paints. I was just looking at Benjamin Moore's Advance paint this afternoon. Your review helped me to choose Benjamin Moore Advance paint (high quality product and bonus: their store is near my home!). Thanks again! I'm going to check out some of your other videos on paint supplies.

What roller where you using for this test? What setting did you use for the sprayer? I have the same one and plan on using Advance.

1/4" mohair roller - that or a high density foam roller I've found are the best for hybrid alkyds. I honestly don't remember the spray setting for Advance. I always test spray on cardboard to get it right. I know it didn't require the highest setting- somewhere midrange I believe.

The Behr takes sooooo long to cure. I had to leave a door for 2 days and it still took my thumb print when carrying it. …and then you start taking about a 3 month cure. Nope.
@RefreshLiving

YES! Honestly, I am starting to think that this paint just doesn't fully cure to a hard finish in the way others do.

Ive used BM Advance countless times, sprayed, brushed and rolled never had any bubbles? IMO best one out there way more durable than SW Emerald.. Advance levels out fantastic but as stated has a 16 hour recoat that is a pain; however, if painting a cabinet I want durability so will deal with it. I recently painted a door and since Advance is only available in semi gloss for exterior I used Emerald, i will say it sprays nice & levels off fantastic but I am not seeing the durability people say about it at all. After i let the paint cure for 2 days I installed it, left some dirty hand prints on the blue so grabbed a wet paper towel and lightly wiped off to see marks where I wiped it? No matter what I did they never went away and had to touch up area then we have pollen in full swing so the black lockset was covered in that I wanted wiped off in doing so my nearly existent finger nails ever so lightly scratched the paint and left a mark that I had touch up. I had left over paint so used on my plastic shutters had same experience with lack of durability, scratched so easily and found myself touching up constantly. It was so bad that i went Home Depot and had them mix up Premium Plus exterior satin and SW color and used this. I used Emerald white color on my interior trim and doors and that is the only time I will ever use it. I recently sprayed a bathroom cabinet using Advance, looks fantastic cleans up excellent and a very hard finish that has yet yo scratch.

you are supposed to use half vinegar and half water. it's also supposed to be hot. Not salt. that is maybe why you had a poor result. you time it also, about 20 minutes.

tip for keeping brush marks out of corners is to dab it on instead of brushing it on. and for steel fire doors ive always used mo hair roller but we also have always used oil based for those. and a tip for getting hairs or lint out of a roller is to take some super sticky tape and wrap it in it and pull it off.

This is nice. I'm trying to do it outdoors, but I'm having a hard time, and now I can see why. My first caterpillar disappeared after it was so big, and I guess a bird ate it. Now I have 9 and just realized one of them was eaten by ants, I'm so heartbroken. I have more work to do. Thank you for your video.

The salt is just an abrasive, add it to the ketchup to give it a little extra scrubbing power (if you're scrubbing with the ketchup. Like ketchup, soak, then salt and scrub to get the grime, then the cleaning step; either rinse and dry or rinse and basso, whichevs), use kosher salt for some large jagged granular scrubbing power as mortons is little smooth squares. Not a bad thing, just different. The acidity of the solution (whether you use ketchup, vinegar, whatevs) is just there to break down the organic matter (people oils 😁) portion of the grime or reverse any oxidative tarnish. So really, you have a whole plethora of substances one could use. JUST DO YOUR CHEMISTRY FIRST!!!! And you wont copper your brass like that white vinegar did.... (which was crazy! I didnt think itd be THAT strong! I wonder if there was some kind of galvanic/ionic reaction for some reason....I mean, beyond the zinc/acid reaction. still....weird....)
@rhmayer1
@rhmayer1 10 күн бұрын
The salt is not just an abrasive (and when dissolved loses that abrasive quality). Salt, when dissolved, becomes a polar solvent, like water, but stronger (with the ionic properties of salt providing + and - charged ions at the molecular level). And the acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon, ketchup, etc.) do more than just break down organic matter like grime and oils. They also provide acid etching to the tarnish/oxidation.
