Refinishing & Restoring Honda VF1000R / NS400R Comstar Wheels

In the case of Honda's VF1000R and NS400R from the mid 80's one of the more challenging aspects of a restoration is the Comstar wheels. Many restorers are reluctant to tackle this but it can make or break the overall look of a resto. In this video I take you through the techniques and process I used on a set of Comstar wheels from a 1985 VF1000R, one of the most underrated limited production run superbikes from the mid 80's. Nice vid, I bought a new NS400R back in 1986. Loved it, but Comstar wheels were so much more difficult to clean than others, and even for the day really limited tyre choice. If memory serves me correctly it was a 110/90-17 rear. I bought a GSKR 750 slingshot in 88 and really appreciated access to wider rubber and a 3 spoke wheelset.

Both fantastic bikes, I have a couple of 86 GSXR1100's but always wanted to ride the short stroke 89 GSXR 750. A client has an NS400R we featured on the channel, trying to convince him to restore it, restored a few RZ's and RG's but never an NS.

Got a 900 miles from new vf1000r in my collection. Totally as it came from the factory. Like they say "u only get an original once. Appreciate the work you,ve put into yours though. Unfortunately although they are stunning to look at and the build qualty superb, honda built an overweight bike. Suzuki,s gsxr in 85 showed the way forward. Hondas next v4 was something special as we all know rc30.

Awesome, maybe you could share some photos! Although they are far too heavy to be considered a serious homologation bike I really enjoy riding them. It’s that buttery smooth torque of the 1000cc V4 motor against the soundtrack of those gear driven cams. I have seen prices on these rising, so hopefully they are starting to get the attention they deserve.
