When the polishing gets to the point where it's just a pain in the butt (yes I know you're young and energetic and it's just a pleasant work out at the moment!) but believe me in a few years, when you're not as spritely & you have a bigger boat, you will want an easier way! Well there is one... nano technology is your friend. We've just switched to using a product called ceramic base & top coat which you just wipe on. No buffing and no re polishing all the time, honestly its a game changer!
@SailingMagicCarpet3 жыл бұрын
I had to use them when I worked in the boatyard but as long as we can polish we prefer that. One does not know the long term effects of nano technology going into the oceans and lakes. But they sure work well in terms of protecting the skin&deck -aladino
@svfairisle3 жыл бұрын
@@SailingMagicCarpet and you don’t know the effects of shedding polish and then tiny bits of gel coat into the ocean either which is what will happen. Your gel coat is in good condition but as the sun gets to it and it oxidises it will go chalky and be shedding billions of pieces into the ocean. Nano technology is a way of stabilising a surface so that doesn’t happen as much. Being afraid of a name and avoiding it for the wrong reasons doesn’t make you green!

For example : The Hard ,, refitting & maintenance is taken very seriously , particually by Aladino,, its his thing , and so it should be , he is quite the craftsman , with no detail being left out ,or overlooked. So the upcoming episodes will be great for technical side of the channel . But there are also the sailing & musical sides to this channel, which also provide that same invigorating feel . So thanks guys ,for putting together one of the best KZbin channels out there...!!! We all love a surprise, but i hope the format dosent change to much . Much Respect from Down Under

It's amazing the amount of things you have to do for the refit of Magic Carpet. Aladino really has an impressive knowledge of boats. I feel so guilty after watching this amazing video. When we decide to upgrade to a bigger boat from our Catalina 27 we decided to buy new, we didn't want a hanger queen or a boat that had been neglected for years and one that would be sitting in a boatyard for 2 years while we refurbish it so we purchased a brand new Privilege 615 Catamaran, we kept this boat for 8 years, sailed it to the Bahama's a few times but mostly just lived aboard her in the Florida Keys. We just recently sold her and when they did the boat survey and they could find nothing wrong, the company doing the survey told us they never come across a boat in such impeccable shape and it showed in the resale price, we actually got more then what we paid for her. We didn't quit sailing we just made a few adjustments, we bought a condo in Key Largo, Florida and purchased a 2020 Corsair 880 Sport Trimaran, what a fun boat and wicked fast....
@DFX2KX3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I wouldn't feel too guilty about going new instead. If you've got the means to do so, new isn't a bad option, for the very reasons you noted. Not everyone has the skills or inclination to tear a boat apart and rebuild it.

Excellent tutorial through perfect filming, that shows all Aladino's experteese and accuracy. Besides, as I'm still locked-down by year-long Covid restrictions, it reminds me of the yearly maintenance at springtime ( "camping" inside the boat on the hard) at the boatyard in Greece. Windlass anchor locker modification. Saw this on another site. "The biggest problem is that a windlass does not work properly unless the chain and rope have enough drop to supply some tension, like tailing a winch. This means a chain locker at least 30 inches deep, preferably clear to the keel. Insufficient drop is one of the most common reasons for poor performance." Agree with getting weight aft, is the slope of your chute going to cause a problem?

Very interesting as always. If i may ask a question? At about 16:00 minute mark, you commented that your boat in basically a coastal cruiser as opposed to a 'blue water cruiser'. My question is this, when you decide its time to leave Europe and being in big water is necessary, do you plan to get a different boat or? Thanks, just curious?
@operator03 жыл бұрын
I think the last part of the video was hinting at that. This boat could make it across the Atlantic on her own if the weather were right, or they could ship it over on a cargo ship, but wouldn't it be much easier if they just had a boat that could handle big seas and blowing wind. Also, it would be really hard to raise children on a boat this small, and they strike me as the kind of people who would want a family in the future. In fact, the really big change might be that she is already pregnant and they are fixing up the Vindo to sell it and buy a bigger boat for the third crew member.....maybe. I guess we'll know more in a few weeks.
