I wish you and Paul an amazing New Year filled with lots of joy, accomplishment and new adventures! I once went to a village in the south of France for an Artist Residency. I did not speak French and no one in the village spoke English. Everyone saw I was a new person but no one spoke to me. I started going everywhere in the village with my French/English dictionary to accomplish my daily tasks and to begin to speak French. Everyone saw that I was making an effort and soon all of the village people were helping me to find the words and wishing me "Bon Courage"! They looked forward to my coming so they could contribute to my progress and it was fun too! Then I decided to volunteer to teach art to children in a special environmental school. This volunteering greatly enriched my French as the children loved correcting me and teaching me! Soon I was able to speak much more and gain vocabulary quicker. There is nothing like volunteering to gain language skills and make friends! I even did a language exchange with adults teaching them English as they taught me French. I suggest you volunteer in something you love like working with animals. See what is available where you live. People love volunteers and it really touches people's hearts. The whole world is open to you as a volunteer. Then you become part of the village where you live and enter more into the culture too! I stayed in the village for 6 months and it took me three days to say goodbye to everyone! I hope my experience will be beneficial to you. Being out with people creates friendships and I was then invited to people's homes and really had a much deeper encounter with the people and culture. Maybe this is something exciting that you would like to do in the New Year! Thank you for all of your videos spoken straight from your heart!

Polly, this was a joy to read. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me, I could picture it all. What an adventure it must’ve been within those 6 months. I have always wanted more of a connection with the locals and a sense of community and it is something I lack here. I will have to look into volunteering like you did.
