I have to say, “somehow Palpatine returned” right at the start actually made me laugh Edit: Autocorrect changed "Palpatine" to "Palestine" apparently

Thank you as always for your perspective; I’m American and hyper-involved in my own local politics, so I really appreciate your breakdown of your own political landscape with your trademark brand of clarity, humor, and wit

Hello, Canadian (parasocial) friend, I'm relieved on your behalf that the election up north went ok. I've been sad. I'm working my way through fury. I stood shoulder to shoulder with a friend on Wednesday while we were both on the student pick-up line (we're teachers). I told her I was sad. She said she was happy. She told me her reasons. I've heard them before, and I understand she has faulty information. I didn't bother explaining my side this time; she's heard it before, but she doesn't really listen. But then we compared our down-ballot. On issues of what the laws should be, we completely agreed. On issues of who we trust with those laws, we are completely opposite. I'm still mad. I still don't see how she can't see through my eyes. But I'm holding on to the little pieces we have in common. I'm not even sure why I wrote this comment. Maybe for the glimmer? Hope glimmers, right?

Like I've said elsewhere: not my circus, not my monkeys. But I live near the circus, and those monkeys can fling their poo a long way. And I have friends who are trapeze artists.

Thanks for the support. We need it but also take care of yourself. You are correct, there has been a right shift in the politics of many countries. The “example “ of the United States is not helpful.

I appreciate this video. I too am worried about where Canada is headed. Trudeau has problems for sure, but a lot of folks just seem fed up of the Liberals being at the federal level for so long, despite some of the good that has come out of it. I'm in Ontario and hear folks complain about Ford, while at the same time blaming the housing crisis on immigrants and welfare queens, people who are immigrants or second generation themselves. I think back to Harper's proposal of implementing policy for the government to deport people who don't have birthright citizenship and and also have a second citizenship. I've heard people blame the state of hospitals and education in the province on the Liberals. It's just disheartening because a lot of Black and Brown folks I know are going to follow the lure of economic populism right off the cliff.

Scott Moe is now trying to say he actually didn't make trans rigjhts a central theme of the election and isn't really gonna do more crimes against humanity. I'm so angry right now. As a disabled woman who's lost her benefits and is watching what little securities she had melt, I'm just beyond hope. Now its just rage.

You all will be fine. Stop giving yourself anxiety about who holds the presidency. Seriously, for most of you, your lives will be exactly the same.

You're affected, too, because a lot of us are eyeing the porous northern border and rubbing our chins speculatively.

It's really scary that what's happening in the US is happening in Canada and Europe, too. I think the mistake the Democratic Party keeps making is, they need to give up power to get power, and they don't want to do that. Any party that doesn't want to be right wing _has_ to listen to people in the real world and do what they are asking, even if it means individuals in the party have to give up their political ambitions, financial gains, and, frankly, their inflated egos. The right wing has an easier time generating support because it caters to people who live in a fantasy world and fantasies cost them nothing. I think the Democrats see that and believe they can do the same thing, but they can't because their base of support contains people who are grounded in reality. You are right that politicians need to give us something, but they also need to be willing to give up something. They can't cling to power - or powerful alliances, like the US has with Israel - and expect people who see reality will just accept it. And there will always be people who see reality. You can't force people to sleep and never wake up. All you can do is use violence and intimidation to keep people who wake up from speaking about reality, and that leads to terrifying things - which is where we are now, unfortunately.
