It's been said that the reason modern humans (H Sapiens) outperformed other species of humans is because we have a much deeper innate curiosity. Others when faced with a stream would be like "I wonder what's on the other side" and that was it, never crossing unless there was immediate need to, whereas we would cross just to satisfy our curiosity. In a sense it can be said that our love of learning is what really makes us human, we learn for fun, including about things that have no direct or immediate impact on our lives.
