What's so cool about being alive is that we have game to play with this body that gives the opportunity to experience a beautiful place in this vast universe where life as its known can be played with ❤

Joseph does a nice job of explaining things. Regarding not attaching to views - the Buddha even stated not to attach to his own teachings, but to use it as a raft to “cross the river” (to reach enlightenment) - i.e., to not to cling to the raft after using it to cross the river.

I love and highly value Joseph’s contributions. I just wish he would use a quality plug-in microphone rather than use the built-in mic on the computer. It really distorts his voice and requires a certain filtering when you listen.

Joseph Goldstein shares his meditation practice directly by sitting with us for the first fifteen minutes as he drops into Mindfulness. Then, he demonstrates precisely where to find the dimmer switch that modulates and controls Bare Attention. He may not look or dress like a Guru or Holy Man, but this is exactly what the Absence of Self looks like. Brother Joseph personifies Vapassana and shows us what a true Arhat looks like...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arhat

Via mindfulness: By reframing feelings as “not-self,” (in lieu of “I am ___”, say “there IS ___”) we are less entangled in and encumbered by them. Me: Ironically, some psychotherapists suggest “owning” feelings, i.e., reframing in the opposite direction-“I FEEL ___,” or “I am angry,” etc., if they perceive the client to be using maladaptive distancing mechanism (detaching from the affect or “not taking responsibility” for one’s experience, etc. Go figure.

So, this may be a naive question, but why do people do these exercises? What motivates them to do this? Why would we make these efforts? Also, if there is no self, why is there a body? Why do we exerience ourselves as a body with a self? If there is just (?) consciousness / awareness itself, why this experience of a life, in a body? How does the body connect to the consciousness and vice versa?

To see things as they really are more accurately, and see with clarity the nature of dukkha/ “suffering”

The body is conditioned, it arises because of causes and conditions. Awareness / consciousness too is conditioned. Nothing whatsoever exists by itself.

For me, the motivation doesn't come from self/ego. It comes from something else. There's a way in which, despite being well supported by science, doing all this stuff seems irrational to the ego. Why would I just sit and "do nothing"? Almost its whole orientation is towards acquiring things and trying to feel better by having this experience or that experience. All the while, the ego is arising within the unlimited.

These are extraordinary questions, incredibly deep. The best way to explain them is to ask you to do the simplest possible meditative exercise, which will probably bring you to some sort of realization: find a comfortable place and sit down in a comfortable position. Allow your body to relax for a few moments. Then, keep your attention on your breathing. Maybe focus on the sensation of air coming in and out of your nose, maybe on the sound... Whatever works for you. Focus solely on that. You will quickly realize that thoughts start to arise - unbidden, unwelcome - and suddenly you're lost in them. If "you" are focusing on your breathing, then who is the one doing the thinking? Where do those thoughts come from? How can there be thoughts if there is no one to think them?

Body is made out of atoms. Is that correct ?yes ,then atoms are 99.9 % empty .Even sub atomic particles are not material but energy. So our bodies and everything in the universae are just illusions .Mental factors are also energy that are ceaselessly changing .Thats why lord samyak sambuddha preached all conditiond things are impermnance suffering and not self (not atman)Buddhism is to practice not to argue .Vertues life /seela concentrated mind /samadi ability to see beyond this five sensory organs /panna is the only way to nibbana .May you all gain highst seela samadi praggna as all enlightened arahants Buddhism gives explanation to all universal phenomena .Sadu sadu sadu 🙏🙏🙏

If there is a body, there is the body’s chief evolutionary -the ego, the self-identifying self that keeps the body working, eating, procreating to survive. Ought it to be : “There is the ego-evolution’s machine?”

31”-32”: Buddha said the eradication of “I am,” is the attainment of Nibbana here and now.

It seems to be semantics ... of course the "self" is a concept, what else could it be?
