This week for the “Bitcoin Magazine Podcast,” we have a replay of last week's interview between Adam Back and Pete Rizzo on Satoshi's legacy. Back is the cofounder and CEO of Blockstream and the inventor of proof of work.
Back reflected on discovering Bitcoin and searching for the best information about it in the early days. He worked hard to understand the technical components as well as all of Satoshi's writings about Bitcoin. Back is not a fan of over-glorifying Satoshi or quoting them, as he doesn’t believe it is as important for individuals to learn from Satoshi's thinking as it is for them to define Bitcoin based on the product and network itself.
Back and Rizzo reflected on the differences between the stated intent of the Bitcoin project, what is actually being built and how Satoshi contributed to that ethos. Enjoy this wide ranging conversation on Satoshi's authority, influence and legacy.
Topics discussed include:
How Adam started to try and understand what Bitcoin was
Is there any value in understanding what Satoshi thought about Bitcoin?
The aversion in the Bitcoin development community about speaking about Satoshi
How, under Satoshi, Bitcoin had a very different development model
Bitcoin Core is today more of a meritocracy. So, why does Bitcoin need a meritocracy?
Satoshi has been gone for 10 years. Is Nakamoto still influential in Bitcoin today?
It’s been said that nobody understands Bitcoin. Was it possible for Satoshi to understand Bitcoin?
The biggest mistake that Satoshi Nakamoto made in building Bitcoin
Was it necessary to remove Satoshi ?
Where does Satoshi Nakamoto rank in terms of the biggest intellectual contributors to Bitcoin
Why do you think Satoshi hasn’t moved their Bitcoin

I like how Adam always leaves hints for those who are attentive. In Bitcoin’s whitepaper you can only find Adam’s name. In another interview he said I’m not not Satoshi. During whole this interview he was discreet and was careful with his words and just in the end he said it “was fun”. It’s fun to answer questions about yourself like you don’t know who you are.

@@topdog5252 Yes. That's why Satoshi is anonymous. He wanted Bitcoin to stand on it's own. Owned and used by the people, not some CEO or inventor. In another interview Adam states that hierachical thinking is counter-productive and unnecessary. Hence, Bitcoin has no leader - it's a currency for the people. That, and Satoshi knew that a successful pseudononymous currency would be used by criminals so wanted no trace-back in case law agencies got involved.

Interesting way both, the interviewer and the interviewee, found to show what the actual Satoshi thinks without officially unveiling the identity, making Adam answer the questions in 3rd person. Great initiative and contribution from Pete Rizzo, thank you. And also thank you to Adam to keep his alter ego alive through this method. It it always interesting to know what Satoshi thinks of the current state of Bitcoin. I missed one question though, I'd have asked him why doesn't he burn that 1M early mined bitcoins sitting in his wallet? Is he planning to dump on us one day? What else?

All Thanks to Adam! Bless U Sir! Satoshi is Adam, and he figured a way to create an L2 in his own name (Lightning); and build on top of bitcoin to use with the banks; which he assumed was necessary (thus keeping the small block size); would help with government adoption of BTC. BTC still works on it's own, and you can build L2s on it, so it did not matter to him except to see it adopted by the entire world. Moving to Malta about the time Satoshi disappeared (Malta is the world famous EU tax haven; a powerful passport is available for a cool $1M); he is still managing BTC development (in minute detail as head of Blockstream); his emails to Satoshi erased and not available (because they would prove he was Satoshi), it was obvious to many that worked with him during formation of Blockstream that there was really no question.
