Hi, Matt, I got two questions that I want to ask you. (I'm a English learner) The first one is you said in this video reading-dominant in early stage of language learning could have a really negative impact on people's pronunciation, but in refold methodology it said in the stage 2A that watching TV with subs could be really good because it gives you 3-channel comprehensibility which increase your comprehension, and the acquisition happens when you comprehend the meaning of the sentence, so when I watch the TV shows or do my immersion, should I turn on the subs or not? I'm kind of puzzling a lot which is more beneficial?(and I know it depends a lot, and in my case, my language level I could say like in stage 3 I think? because I'm very careful to not output at early stage, and I'm learning (like refold said) to speak, and I can understand probably 99% of this video with a sub title, maybe I listening u a lot and just get used to it XD) The second one is I'm planing to do immersion for like a good year at least, so you said in refold in stage 3 we should adopt a language parent and spend 50% of time to do active listening and 100% of time of passive listening, but in stage 2 you suggest having a good grasp of everyday-conversation domain is more beneficial, and we should watch and binge a lot of TV shows, and also your intensive immersion content can supplement with free-flow immersion content, which can choose the same domain(and I've already have a list of TV shows for intensive and free-flow immersion), so it seems a bit contradictory... and should I adopt a language parent or should I watch the TV shows? which sounds good? And lastly, I'm a huge fan of you, and I really appreciate the content you put out there and the endeavor and dedication you've made in learning languages, which benefits and motivates countless individuals that you might not realize, and also I think sharing is caring, you've already done a really good job, Thank you

I'm curious about this too, but my gut feeling is that reading subs is not detrimental in the same way that reading alone is because it's not subvocalized. When we read text on its own, we simulate the sound of the words in our head. But subtitles sort of mask that process, since we're mapping the meaning of the words onto a voice that we're already audibly hearing. That's just a guess, though. I have no data to back it up. However this would only be true if the audio is playing while you read the subtitles.
