Hey there language learners! One of the MOST common questions we get is "what does it mean to be fluent?"
Maybe you've found yourself asking that question recently as you're working your way through the language and wondering where the fluency finish line is.
We've got some news for you: Fluency is a spectrum, not a destination.
In this video, Ben goes over how we view fluency at Refold, and what those definitions actually mean and feel like when you reach them.

Yeah.... functional fluency I hit just after 1.5 years learning German, but I feel like even if I studied just as much for another 1.5 years I still wouldn't call myself "advanced fluent". There are just so many goddamn words?????? I listened to a lecture once saying that according to some test, most university educated English speakers know just shy of 20,000 words (I think this test used word families= 1 word). Extremely well educated ESL speakers typically knew only 8-9000, even those teaching a university subject in English who'd been living in an English speaking country for years. The highest value they measured was 11,000. The lecturer's explanation for this was that these very clever people knew all the everyday vocab, all the most common words in books and movies, and even a deep pool of words in their subject area, but had read relatively little outside their subject area and had a vocabulary comparative in size to someone... I think entering middle school? Anyway. That was my call to action: read loads of books in German!!! Get really into slightly obscure and complicated video games in German about market economies or diplomacy or state management! So far so good, but although I'm beginning to feel seriously awkward about my continuing presence in a C1 course, it's going to be a slow road measured in quarter-year if not 6 months blocks of incremental progress.

I don’t know… I love studying the language, I just do it for fun, but at this point a feel kind of stuck at the same level, that’s why I challenged myself to create an English Channel. I know it takes time but I want to get to the advanced fluency. At the moment I don’t have the financial means to move abroad and accelerate the process, so… I’ll do my best from Brazil, where I live.

I did travel with a guy from Taiwan who was determined to eat *everything* with chopsticks. He did everything from sandwiches to pizza to birthday cake. He's clearly the most fluent person in the world.

I use chopsticks all the time lol. So much better for mindful eating actually. Obviously not with* every* meal but still

will I be able to watch movies and tv shows without subtitles by reaching functional fluency in the language? if so, how much will I understand more or less ? just an estimate for me to know when I reach this milestone😅

Almost certainly! Functional fluency is a level where you don't really need another language. You could do most things, just at a slightly lower level, in that language. It's pretty much impossible to say exactly how much you will understand since there are so many factors, but 95%+ is a solid estimate. You'll really know when you reach that milestone when you can do anything you want in that language without feeling like it's holding you back.
