Why colors are visible when light passes through a prism ? And why colors are not visible when they don't pass trough a prism ?

As sunlight for example (which is composed of many frequencies "colors") travels through air or vacuum, it travels at the speed of light, but when it passes through a prism ( n >1), each color will travel at a certain velocity that is different from other colors, this means that it is interacting with the prism in a different way and thus it refracts at a different angle. This leads to the "splitting" of colors.
