Could one take the guts from a smaller chest freezer and build a slightly bigger, but much better insulated box for it? I have access to a free, but smelly, small working freezer but I want a bigger one. I'm a pro cabinetmaker so I could make a nice tight box. I could add 4" or 6" of insulation and make sure the door seals perfectly.

Is it worth it to recoil a deep freezer if the evaporator coil is messed up for whatever reason? What about the condenser? Is it worth recoiling those?

I wouldn't bother with the condenser tray.... the inside pipes is the only ones worth doing. If you compressor is good, but it sprung a leak. You only looking at the cost of the pipes. And obviously your time.....

Thanks for the video. I have some questions at 6:00 you said most fridges (isnt it a freezer?) have more tubes than your 29 mtr. I have taken out my ice vitrine completly and it amazed me howless tubing it got alaround in pur foam just two tubelines. And i guess they where there only where hands make contact so it feels could at the outside, but has noting to do whit cooling the vitrine. And about that black iron thing on your fridge to cool off heat. I dont got it on my ice vitrine can you explain that. Because it is a big profeaional ice vitrine. Why i want to know all of this i i wanted toakr something like you did and you said fridges have more tubing MORE THAN THAT WHAT YOU GOT. What i have to do than for a FREEZER. and why this icevitri e is so big and have so lesa tubeing while itsl says to freez dow to minua 36 degrees. Can you help me further thanks anyhow Michel

Hi there. Yes sorry meant to Freezers. All depends on gas volumes. And that is calculated by the size of your compressor in the freezer. I use 6mm copper tubing, so it has low volume, most freezers have 8 or 10mm tubing, normally aluminum is used, and that's cheaper but aluminum doesn't last. The oil found in the compressor causes corrosion. Copper lasts a lifetime. The black thing? Are you referring to the accumulation chamber? Trick I picked up from a old professional mechanic. The oil in the compressor sometimes finds its way into the pipes. Because I use 6mm tubing it has a narrow path , oil could clog the flow. So the accumulation chamber is like a catch box of sorts. Hope it helps! Thanks for commenting!

Formulas are how the old school guys were thaught. My knowledge is all trail and error. Capillary length and size determines the flow rate, the quicker the flow the weaker the cooling, the slower the flow the better, but not too slowly. There is a sweet spot.

We know today's deepfreezers either have alumunium or iron evaporators and condensers but had it been a copper evaporator inside puff insulation ( time of 1st make ) then 1. what is the probable percentage of leakage? 2. Or even puff insulation do cause any chemical reaction to perforate the copper evaporator. I have watched your video along with many other videos but amazed to your good quality job and thrrow knowledge with confidence, so I request and if you may answer to my these two queries.
@aldovanzyl-jackofalltrades8446
@aldovanzyl-jackofalltrades8446 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and responding. In my experience IF copper was used it would last forever, but copper is expensive and that's why it isn't used when built by manufacturers. They want it to break. The puff insulation has no chemical reactions I believe, but seals the moisture build up on the pipes in and this causes rust. See some of my other videos for that. I just love fixing the unfixable, and don't really care if it cost me a lot. Its all worth the experience! Thank you for your kind words once again.

Could I build it like you have done here and thencover it to look more aesthetically pleasing? What compressor do you suggest? Yes, I know a guy that did that, he covered it with chromedeck plate, looked awesome actually. Not sure what compressor to use in 12v range. Normally its calculated by the volume of gas in the pipes. So this rebuild takes very little gas because its only 30 meters and 6mm copper pipe. So a small compressor can do the job easily

Hello Aldo, Thanks for this awesome video. I'm having some issues with my chest freezer and I'd like to get some recommendations from you. I have a 429 litres freezer which had worked for about 7 years without issues. Then one day, it stopped freezing even though the unit was on and compressor was working. I called a fridge mechanic and he said there was no refrigerant in the system due to an internal leak. He recommended that we change the piping from aluminum to copper. A few days after we did, the freezer stopped cooling again and I called him back. He checked the system and said the compressor was bad and needed to be changed. I bought a new compressor that was the exact same model with the one that went bad. I called the mechanic but he was unable to come for days. So I got another mechanic who installed the compressor and charged the system with refrigerant. But from then on only the top half of the inside of the freezer actually freezes and forms ice even at the coldest thermostat setting. The bottom half doesn't freeze, doesn't form any ice; it just stays cold. I called back the mechanic but he couldn't figure out what was wrong. He even added more refrigerant but then the freezing reduced to only the top quarter of the freezer while suction line to the compressor was freezing up and forming thick ice which later melts and floods the floor. I reverted to the first mechanic who said that the R134a refrigerant was too much so he reduced it. He then cut open the pipe just before the dryer and let out all the refrigerant and tested the system and said the system needed to be flushed as it had some dirt in it (The other mechanic didn't do this before installing the new compressor). In the process of flushing it with what he said was cooking gas, he discovered that the capillary was blocked and had to run a new one along with a new dryer. I did see quite a lot of dirt come out as he was flushing it. He then charged the system with R134a refrigerant but still, only the top half of the inside of the freezer was freezing with the bottom half only cold. He also couldn't explain what was happening. I called a third mechanic and all he did was add more refrigerant which again made the compressor suction line to freeze and the freezer to be more noisy than before. I had to reduce the refrigerant before the noise reduced and though the compression suction line doesn't freeze I still see droplets of water all across it. The three mechanics don't seem to know what could be wrong. However I have been doing extensive online research and based on my research I have a few thoughts as to what could be the reason but I want to run them through you. They are: 1. I suspect that the copper used in re-piping the inside of my freezer may have been larger in diameter than the original aluminum pipe. The mechanic said he used 3/8 Inch diameter copper pipe running them at the same length with the original aluminium that he took out. The pipe he took out looked to be kinda smaller than the one he put in. Could an increased diameter pipe make the compressor originally designed for a smaller diameter insufficient for freezing the entire system since the effective volume of the pipe the refrigerant has to go through has increased due to the increased pipe diameter thereby making the work being asked of the compressor greater than it can give? 2. If the scenario above is the case, I'm thinking of getting a compressor of higher power. The one currently installed is 1/3HP. I'm thinking of getting a 1/2Hp compressor. But then again I saw online that getting a higher rated compressor than the system was designed for would introduce a mismatch, as its pumping capacity would be too large for the capillary and the refrigerant won't flow fast enough to keep up with the compressor. Also the compressor would consume more electricity and the sunction superheat and liquid subcooling would both go up. Higher superheat and subcooling means that the compressor, the condenser, and the part of the evaporator that will now be liquid starved will all run warmer while the rest of the evaporator will be colder.. Sunction pressure could be in a vacuum (which isn't favorable) and discharge high. So please what do you think about me getting a higher power compressor? 3. I read somewhere that if there is air in the system it could cause only half of the inside to freeze. I also saw somewhere online that said if the system has air in it, only the top half of the condenser heats up the bottom of the condenser doesn't. So I checked the condenser and noticed that only the top half of the condenser warms up a bit during operation of the freezer but the bottom half doesn't. It's just at room temperature: not cool and not warm. Could it be that there's air in the system and it's preventing the bottom half of the inside of my freezer from freezing? 4. Another thing I noticed was that the new capillary that the mechanic put isn't quite as thick in diameter as the one originally installed in the freezer. Could the use of a smaller sized capillary affect the freezing and cause this half way freezing? 5. Also could a faulty or bad thermostat be the cause of only the top half of the inside of the freezer freezing? Please I'd appreciate your words of wisdom and guidance on what I could do to solve this problem once and for all. Also, I'm sorry for the long message... I just wanted to give you a full back story of my travails with this freezer. Thanks... I look forward to your reply
