This, minus the chia seeds, is essentially Bircher Muesli - developed around 1900 by a Swiss physician for patients in his clinic. The original muesli was soaked overnight in water (and lemon juice) and eaten with yoghurt, and was essentially raw rolled oats, with fruit such as grated apple added before it was served. Also, there was generally a lot more fruit than oats in Bircher muesli (pretty much the opposite proportions to modern pre-prepared mueslis). Modern 'quick oats' don't need the long soak as they are steam treated to soften them. As some commenters have noted however - the more processing, the more the chance of cross contamination (and it does reduce the nutritional value somewhat). The above isn't meant as any reflection on the poster of the video - his combinations sound delicious! I think it must be easier to find actual raw rolled oats here in NZ - perhaps we have fewer of the multitude of processed options? I've never had trouble finding them, anyway. A point however: the poster who noted that only around 1% of the population have problems with gluten is essentially correct - about 1% of the population have coeliac disease, or true 'gluten sensitivity' - a genetic autoimmune condition that damages the wall of the small intestine and results in malabsorption of essential nutrients such as vitamin B12. It can't be cured - you have to go 100% gluten-free - but it can be tested for, so you can know for sure if you have it. And about 0.4% have a true 'wheat allergy' (again - doctor diagnosed) which is a true allergic response to wheat, which may show up as skin, respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms. There is however NO scientific evidence that the fad (as that's what it is - another dietary fad) for eating 'gluten-free' is necessary or even healthy for most people, as we get many necessary nutrients from whole grains, and a lot of the time those whole grains are obtained from wheat or oats. So the message? See your doctor if you think you have coeliac or a wheat allergy; and otherwise, ditch the fads and simply eat a balanced diet. And yes - I am a doctor, and work with dieticians (as in people who have degree qualifications and are registered dieticians - not 'nutritionists', who don't have to have any qualifications or be registered, so avoid!) and have worked with people who have the above conditions. The only good thing any of us can see about the fairly recent 'gluten-free' train that everyone is jumping on is the much wider variety of gluten-free foods now available for the people who actually need them!

Mine turned out thicker than yours appears to be, which is what I was hoping for. It was probably the almond milk. It turned out very good and it's a great quick thing for me to grab and take to work because I never have time to sit down and eat breakfast before I leave.

Love this video, Jack. If you want to make this even more healthy, try adding up to a tablespoon of ground flax seed. It's a good source of omega 3's, fiber and it helps to lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol. Just be sure to use ground flax seeds, or grind the whole ones yourself. The whole seeds aren't digestible, so you won't get any of the benefits if you don't grind/crush them. My favorite flavor for overnight oats is strawberry vanilla. So refreshing on a warm summer morning.

Muscle Head Yea, I know what you mean. I love to put chia into my recipes but alone?...Uh, no. It is suggested that chia can help with weight loss by acting as an appetite suppressant. You mix 1 tablespoon of the seeds with 4 oz. of water, stir and let it gel. Then drink it down. It is supposed to give you a full feeling so you don't overeat. I tried this once but it was difficult to drink. Like swallowing unflavored gelatin....ugh!.

I read a comment that someone said that you have to smash the Chia seeds. That's not true. You can eat them two different ways. You can either soak them in liquid for up to 20 minutes and let them expand, or you can just add the seeds to whatever you're drinking and they'll expand in your stomach. They're supposed to absorb the liquid of what you put it into. They almost seem like a tapioca consistency. Also, I read a comment where someone asked if they could leave out the Chia seeds. You can, but the Chia seeds help to make it thick. If you leave the Chia seeds out this dish will be runny.

If you leave them out it won't thicken like it shows in the video. Chia seeds expand in liquid to sort of a tapioca consistency, and that's where you get the thickness of the product you see in the video. Jack probably should have mentioned the advantage of using chia seeds in something like this aside from the fact that they have protein and fiber. They thicken.

Jack, I really wish you would stop using these stock images on your thumbnails. It reflects badly on YOUR final product. If you feel that what YOU made is not good enough for a thumbnail, then maybe you should start over or try something until you're happy with its aesthetics. This is not the first time you've done this. Your refrigerated oatmeal does not look like the refrigerated oatmeal in the thumbnail.
@psylent77710 жыл бұрын
This isn't really a stock image, it's a thumbnail taken from a page where I'm guessing that Jack got the idea. Check out www (dot) theyummylife (dot)com/Refrigerator_Oatmeal and that page has the exact image. Pure oatmeal is preferred, but most oatmeal on the market is quick oats, or heavily processed. Meaning they are cross contaminated with wheat and other common market grains and hence contain gluten or cause cross reaction for celiac or gluten sensitive people. So in essence this is the worst choice for most people who are lactose intolerant or gluten sensitive. It looks tasty though, I wish I could have that. But if I do my gut would balloon in a few hours to something akin to Jabba the Hutt.
@marcopolo300110 жыл бұрын

I ended up watching this because I didn't know what the texture of oatmeal was supposed to be like, I made some for the first time and not sure if it was too much or too little water. It's nasty and that intro made me so hungry :(

Yep all by itself it doesn't taste all that great Alex but when you add sugar and raisins or countless other things it is great. Good luck in the future. :)

Dianna Flowers I guess it was just a cheap brand or something, it had some cinnamon flavor but it was hard to taste it over the wood flavor lol

Poached peaches or nectarines with lemon rind on top of chia seed pudding is an awesome dessert/light breakfast. I substitute yogurt with the pudding in parfaits!
