Refugees' Dead End in Italy: Breaking Borders

As Europe faces a huge refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people flooding into the continent to flee war, poverty, and political oppression, its response has been chaotic. Thousands have died making the perilous boat journeys across the Mediterranean as European governments squabble among themselves on how to deal with the situation.
At the end of June, France closed its border with Italy to refugees and migrants, trapping hundreds in the Italian border town of Ventimiglia. Money was low by the time most people reached the town, so they had to seek help in two camps - one run by the Red Cross and the other by European activists - for food and shelter while they waited in vain for the border to reopen.
VICE News travels to the French-Italian border to speak to those who are stuck, as well as organizations and activists struggling to cope with the situation.

Actually, when I traveled from Switzerland to Italy by train in 2007, the Italian police hit a baton on my seat to wake me up and produce my passport. Note I am a white woman with blond hair and blue eyes, and fortunately I was traveling with an Italian local who was living in Switzerland. I am surprised that the Italian government has allowed the situation to get to this point based on my experience. Immigration needs to be controlled for the benefit of all involved, otherwise it creates chaos and instability, in my opinion.

I don't understand what is going on in European politics these days.. I am immensely sorry that so many people suffer in the world but the EU countries obviously cannot accept 4 billion Africans and Asians who are suffering from war, political corruption, disease or who simply want "European" standards of living. There is not enough space and resources. Our welfare systems cannot support millions of unskilled newcomers who don't even speak any European language. It's often doubtful whether they even support democracy and our way of life - which BTW also differs among the member states. Since so many immigrants have been coming to the EU illegally and pushing their way by force these days I think the logical step is to secure our borders as much as possible and turn these people back. We can allow some immigrants but only such who we are willing to welcome. It should be our decision, not theirs. If the world sees we allow everybody, why should anybody living in Africa and poor parts of Asia stay in their home countries.

I'm not from Europe but I think that european countries have a right to secure their borders if they want. Its for their own security. These are clearly not all "Syrian refugees" who are running away from ISIS...most of these are economic migrants from north africa who are trying to take advantage of the welfare system and asylum programs that are for ACTUAL refugees. Maybe vice considers these border police "racist", but if they weren't there, europe would get so overwhelmed by migrants that they wouldn't even be able to afford to take care of their own citizens anymore.

Outrageous, i left the UK a few days ago. In France i destroyed my passport, and later today I will get into a small boat to leave for the UK. I have changed my name to Omar X. After i sneak back on the boat, the UK Immigration Officers will put me up in a Hotel (4 Star) and the Government will give me £49.50 each week. I will live in the free hotel for a year or two as i wait for a free flat/home. During that time i will not have to pay for TV license or water bills/ electricity bills. I will eat 3 free meals served to me each day in the hotel, as i access the free WI-Fi on my i-Phone 6. Hard Life
