One of the things that was really cool about this collab is their ages at the time: 25 (Hwasa), 31 (Jessi), 41 (Lee Hyori), and 51 (Uhm Jung Hwa). Uhm Jung Hwa debuted as a soloist over 30 years ago!! She's also the one with the super red hair here and the voice that Bulldog kept noticing.

Lee Hyo-ri wanted to bring together some of the baddest female in kpop and she did. All different generations and ages. They are all so fierce that anyone of them could walk into a store and ask for a refund and no questions would be asked nor their request denied. They all have boss energy. Um Jung-hwa actually had thyroid cancer in the past. Her vocals were affected by this. When recording this song she had some difficulties singing certain part. All 3 other women cheered her on and encouraged her. Also her 'manager' Yoo Jae-Suk got her a vocal coach to help her out. You guys should check out the episodes that takes viewers through their journey for this song. I wish they had done more songs but it was only for this one and it was for charity. All this was during covid so they really weren't able to perform in front of a large audience. For, I believe the last performance, they are in a concert arena. Everything is dark except the spotlight on them. They're singing and all of a sudden, when they start the chorus, you hear fans singing and doing fan chants. The 4 women got emotional hearing their fans. I think that was such a sweet surprise for them. 😊

So "Refund Sister" was basically a pet project that spawned from an idea from Lee Hyori during one of another pet project, SSAK3 (You guys should see that segment too) from her involvement during a segment of the famous South Korean reality program "Hangout with Yoo/How Do Yoo Play?". It involves quite big names in the K-Pop industry. Hyori had always admired the pioneer and the so-called "Madonna of the K-Pop scene" and that's Uhm Junghwa. She then tossed the idea of getting Hwasa and Jessi along for the ride and there we have the "Refund Sister". Uhm Junghwa liked the idea alot also thus she jumped in and it became a revitalization program for her too as prior to the project, she was actually retired as she lost her iconic voice due to thyroid cancer and despite beating it and recovering from it, her vocal cords were damaged which destroyed her morale thus when she heard that her juniors were making a program that involved her, she jumped into it and it turned out to be a complete masterpiece. Jessi needs no introduction as she's... Well... Jessi and Nunu Nana just brought her into more fame in South Korea and outside. Hwasa also blazed her own solo career during Mamamoo's hiatus and with her smooth but yet sultry vocals and her cool outlook with her attitude often being said to be accommodating and slightly aloof at times, it made sense why they wanna work with her. Hyori herself was also quite a legend back in the early-mid 2000s as her style in songs were just like a Korean Britney Spears but with a more deeper voice. With 4 superwoman of the K-Pop industry, it became a sensation. Also, they're gaps in age represents each age "class" that they're in with 50s (Junghwa), 40s (Hyori), 30s (Jessi) and 20s (Hwasa).

So to add, a couple of facts about the project - The line "don't touch me" that was in the song was initially tossed around as a joke and also on insistence by the 4 singers towards their producer of the group and also the host of the whole reality program, Yoo Jaesuk who goes with the name "Jimi Yoo" for the project and due to the toughness of the line, they added it into the lyrics to make it more impactful - The 4 of them are actually quite close to each other one way or another thus it made sense why they wanna do the project together and it went off without a hitch - As mentioned before, Hyori (Yellow) is a legend in the early-mid 2000s that she's basically Korea's "Britney Spears" whereas Uhm Junghwa (Red) is a legend of the late 90s-early 2000s with hits like "Poison", "Festival", "Invitation" and she's basically Korea's Madonna. Both of them are extremely great singers in their own right and Hyori even doubles as a songwriter now at her own free time whilst living in Jeju. - The whole MV from start to finish was said to be done under 100k USD at approx just 30k total which was unheard of as at that time of filming, an average MV shoot would cost over 100k USD - If you read the whole lyrics that's translated, it just screams "girl power" which, I am all for because it balances toughness AND how woman can stand for themselves also

it was part of a variety show of Yoo Jae Suk (the most famous host in Korea). Multi episode skit where YJS is their manager and formed a girl group. It showed how they were formed, chose their song, practiced their choreography, filmed the MV and debuted in the music show of MBC. Similar project was done also for SSAK3 with YJS, Hyori (the girl in yellow in this MV) and Rain (male soloist)

So this was a one time collab for charity. Each member is from a different generation of Kpop with one member in her 50s, 40s, 30s and 20s… Jessi and Hwasa being the youngest two

Naw it wasn't for charity. During SSAK3's project, Hyori tossed out the idea that she actually wanna sing with Uhm Junghwa, Jessi and Hwasa as another showpiece and Yoo Jaesuk liked the idea too. However, the then-project director of the whole reality program, Kim Tae-ho, pulled the strings to make it happen and, it did. It became a revitalization program for Uhm Junghwa too in the process as she was actually retired from singing after her recovery from thyroid cancer which destroyed her vocal cords and the whole program just worked wonders. It wasn't for charity per-se. The profits did go to charity but that's how the whole projects has been. It has been the same thing from the start of all music projects with "Hangout with Yoo" from Yu-plash to Yusangsuel to SSAK3 and then Refund Sister.

If IU is the Taylor Swift of Korea (don’t come at me, I like IU’s music better, I’m just comparing their popularity) Then Lee Hyori, (lady in yellow in the video) who formed this group is Korea’s Beyoncé. She is an absolute legend.
