Today I'm working on a Gibson Les Paul Custom brought in by a client.
In this video I show you how I go about fixing some fret buzz and tuning stability issues on this Gibson Les Paul.
To tackle the tuning problems on this guitar I needed to replace the nut.
And to fix the fret buzz a full fret leveling, re-crown and fret end dressing job was required.
After a set of new strings and a setup I ended up with a very good playing guitar.

I really love a good fret job, kudos on that. Before masking off the frets I always put a long strip of masking tape along both sides of the neck. That way you can project the binding a bit more and you can rip off all of the masking tape in one go. That's not only useful, but also very satisfying. And I always intonate comparing the 12th fretted note to the harmonic. Intonating on just the harmonic doesn't make sense, since the string will simply oscillate in a standing wave, which is exactly one octave above the base note. There's no way of telling if the node of the standing wave is exactly on the 12th fret or not.

Hey Synic42, Thanks for reminding me of the masking tape trick. I used to do the exact same thing but for some reason stoped doing it. Time to make it a habit again. You're right about setting the intonation. Comparing the harmonic with the fretted note makes the most sense. Thank you for sharing this.

Hi Tony, This guitar had a nut replacement before so I didn't expect any lacquer, or in this case a lot of glue on the sides of the nut. But you are correct in saying it's a good idea to score the edges of the nut before removal... just in case. Thank you.

For intonation adjustments, you are comparing the 12fret harmonic to the fretted note. The notes get sharp because when you fret a note you are stretching the strings down to the fret, which makes it sound sharp. The 12th fret harmonic is just a reference. You could just compare the tuned open string to an octave higher fretted note, but it’s easier to use the harmonic since it’s the same pitch. Especially if you are using a strobe style, or other digital tuner.

@@UnquendorGuitars Well you don’t intonate the harmonic. You just use it to check that the string is in tune. The harmonic bypasses the frets. 😃

Enjoyed the video! I tend to intonate my high e and b strings ever so slightly flat, when fretted. I find it gives a good balance for taming the major 3rd interval clash on high gain without sacrificing intonation for non-clashing notes. Kind of half way to the Van Halen string detune trick.

Your work is very nice. You take your time and put great care into everything you do. When I do fret leveling, I like to use the Sharpie Chisel markers; they're nice and big. I noticed you were using the rocker after using the beam. That's a good habit especially when working on a guitar of that value. You did all that you can to keep those frets as organic as possible. Those frets are nice and beefy, almost as good as the frets you use on your guitars. Maybe, hopefully if things work out a certain way, I might ask you to build a seven string. Your necks are substantial. The contact from your necks to the bodies is really beefy. Your guitars look solid, like they would last a lifetime. Your inlay work is impeccable. The details are so important; the output jacks, the locking tuners, the bridges that you use, the pots and the switches etc.

I intonate using the 2nd and 14th frets. Comparing an open note to a fretted note is almost comparing apples to oranges. If you have the saddle adjusted so that the 2nd and 14th are in tune, you will have good intonation over the fret board. Open chords are always a challenge for tuning. Sweetened tunings like Peterson can help, but it's always a compromise.

I was wondering if you adjusted the pickup heights from the strings. Also the pickups look as though they are not parallel to the strings (when viewed from the side of the guitar) but seem to be angled toward each other. What I mean is that the neck pickup front edge (neck side) looks higher than the pickup rear edge (bridge side) and the reverse for the bridge pickup.
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
I adjusted the pickups off camera in my office. I always adjust pickup height by ear instead of measuring. I believe this gives me a better result as no two pickups are the same and by adjusting them by ear you can also adjust them to tase. I can't recall if the pickups were at an angle. It might look that way due to the camera perspective. But I'm sure they were set up properly when I handed the guitar over to the owner.

When I intonate my guitars I always intonate by the fretted 12th note I completely agree with you on it if you do it intonated your not fully pressing the string down that can cause a big difference in the note when playing because the harmonic is just grazing your finger over and there is a lot of pressure in-between the harmonic and the fretted note. I also check and make sure it's still in tune farther down the fretboard so it sounds completely in tune

For intonation, I use 12th fret fretted, 12th fret harmonic and 7th fret octaves on a strobe tuner that has built-in compensation for irregularities in tuning guitars. Peterson's seem to be the most accurate. Definitely a critical element in intonation!

For those with tuning issues,I check the G-note on the low E string. If your tuner reads sharp then your nut is too high and will have bad tuning at the end of the neck. I always check that along with the open and twelth during intonation set up.

Hi Mr Front ranger, I think I usually go for a 20-25 degree (from the vertical) bevel. I kind of eyeball it to be honest. This guitar had already been re-fretted by someone else and they had a fairly 'large/flat' bevel. For my rounded frets I need a rather steep bevel that is in proportion to the width and height. I'm sorry but I don't know how to explain this in just text.. might do a special video on this..

@@garyswift83 I used to sell them on eBay until the crash in 2008, then things pretty much dried up and I wasn't making anything over the cost of the parts. Good parts are still available, and I'd recommend a JTM-45 or 50 watt Plexi, as either one sounds great just plugged straight in, and they take pedals well. First time I played through a proper tube amp, (one I built) it just blew my mind. Not sure what the cost would be, I'd have to run through the current component prices, and work up some numbers. A KZbinr some years ago had a vid demo-ing an amp he bought from me, and I'll try and find it.

What was the purpose of the tape on the 12th fret when you were leveling the upper frets? Was that to create fall away?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose, Yes it is. First I level all the frets. And when they are all level I stick 2 layers of very thin masking tape on the 12th fret and mask of half of my leveling beam with another piece of tape. This gives me a very slight angle to create a fall away for the lower frets. Usually stopping as soon as I 'start hitting' the 15the fret with sandpaper.

I learned to intonate by making sure the fretted 12th fret was identical to the harmonic on the 12th fret, because they should be the same note. I guess comparing the open note to the fretted 12th note (which I think is what you mean when you explain your method) should work just the same, the notes are only an octave apart.

What do you charge in your area? I just did a similar make over on a 12 string electric and spent waaay too much time 16hours or so, fret level, crown, dress, and tweaking the nut, then setting the intonation on the bridge and tightening all the hardware etc...16 hours (I’m a bit slower than most a perfectionist and ran into some weird problems on a cheap guitar) . And now it’s plays like a dream with vintage flat wound strings on it, but I have no idea what to charge the fella. Great video love this stuff cheers!
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Felix, Thank you. What I charge kinda depends on the type of job and customer to be honest. I always do a full inspection on the guitar and try to guesstimate the amount of work. If I can make a pretty accurate estimation and I know the 'type' of client I will offer a fixed price based on the estimated amount of work and parts. But if I expect there might be a chance any issues may arise while working on the guitar I try to agree upon a hourly rate with the customer. I recognize the perfectionist part and spending way longer then expected on a job. This is something you have to take into account when making the estimate if you can. Setting a price is very hard in my opinion. As a luthier you want a fair payment for your time and effort while most clients often feel you're too expensive. It's a fine balance you'll need to find also depending on the quality of your work, location and direct competition. For example, in my area there are at least 3 music stores offering guitar setups and repairs including strings at a price for which I can hardly buy a set of new strings. But they only offer setups and repairs to try and lure clients to their shop so they can try and sell them other stuff to make their profit. But my clients are willing to pay me more because of the quality of my work, and maybe my coffee. So thank you for the question but there isn't an easy straight forward answer I'm afraid.

I've found that the Peterson Strobo Tuners are necessary for a proper intonation as they are one of the only tuners that will resolve down to .01%. Some may argue that a standard digital tuner's .1% accuracy is "close enough". To that I would say that after spending the time for a setup using anything less accurate just doesn't make any sense. That .01% accuracy difference can be critical as the tolerances of the played strings can kind of stack up and produce some strange dissonance tones. The Peterson Tuners are not that much more expensive considered the significant increase in accuracy/resolution. Great job with those fret ends, you made it look quick and easy Sir ;-)
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
Hi HK Guitar, Thank you very much for the compliment. I've been looking into the Peterson Tuners and am thinking about getting one. Although I agree with you you need to be as precise as you can be in areas where it counts. I think, and this is my personal opinion, that 0.1% accuracy is "close enough". Especially if you take into account that a player might use a different pressure on the strings than I used while setting the intonation. Pressure on the strings while playing makes up for more than the 0.99% accuracy difference in the tuner used. But this sad I value your method and I thank you for sharing this.

Liked your video. Only one issue. As I get older I'm having problems hearing and Distinguishing voiced in a crowded room. To much back ground noise. If I can make a suggestion. Use the music for your intro and fade it out completely. The work you do. Tapping Sandi g is music to my ears. The artists work is most impressive. Tha k you for a wonderful video. Make more please.

You do nice work. Setting the intonation to the harmonic is not the way to go. The harmonic should always be the same as the open fundamental. It divides the vibrating string in half. Setting the intonation with the string fretted at the 12th is what you need to allow for a true division by 2 when the string is fretted.

Hi Arthur, Thank you for your comment. This is the method I also use. But it is great to hear and read how other people are approaching intonation.

Which means that the customer is ridiculous. So he does not want to replace the cracked pickup frame but he does not even know that after such a horible amateurish re-fret that destroyed its biding the guitar has already dramatically reduced value is no more nowhere near original...

black nut looks so out of place. Is that a real gibson ? The reason I ask is I thought Icould see the truss rod channel in the nut slot, and Gibson necks are drilled, there is no channel.

Of course it’s not a two way truss rod, I’m surprised you didn’t know that from the beginning. Gibson uses a one way truss rod, and I don’t think there are exceptions. Of course, epiphone users two way trusses. Also, a better way of getting a Gibson nut out s to tap it from the fretboard towards the headstock.
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, Thank you for your comment. Yeah I did know that, but apparently not while I was shooting this video. Sometimes the most basic knowledge flees my mind when filming. I couldn't tap the nut out towards the headstock because the headstock veneer was up against the back of the nut.

@@UnquendorGuitars Have you seen the technique of taking a very thin hand saw, and splitting the nut down the middle, then tapping from neck side and headstock side inwards which collapses the nut? It's a good technique for future reference if you get stuck. Thanks for your videos.
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
@@tonycarpaccio9550 I have read about it, but I didn't think of it while filming this. I don't do repairs that often, I mostly build guitars from scratch, so sometimes those little tricks used by experienced guitar techs aren't second nature to me yet. Thank you very much for the tip and your compliment.

Hi Michael, Thank you very much for your honest and helpful feedback. I have been wondering about this myself if the background music is 'to much' and if I should change it up a little. I must say that KZbin tends to emphasize the music more then it is in my original edit. That's something I have to take into account when editing. I'll try to keep your suggestion in mind. Thank you again.

It just goes to show, Gibson's quality gates are utter shite. I had to return two 2016 Gibson Flying V's as they were unplayable and any intervention, i.e. any third party set up, even if I recut the nut, Gibson told me, would have invalidated the warranty. Just set them back.

Hi Chris, I'm sorry to hear you had bad experiences with your guitars and the lack of customer service from the big brands. There is always a chance something not being as it should with a product but good customer service should make sure things get handled in the clients best interest within reason. I hope to do better if I ever had a complaint on one of my guitars. In this case it was an older model, had been played a ton and had a terrible re-fret job and nut placement done by someone else.
