I was refused entry in Hilton Head to go do a hike. Other cars and vehicles were allowed in and they even had a guard gate saying the daily use fee, but they refused me entry because......
Hilton Head was a total bust except for King Neptune sundial. I just wasn't feeling it and there were way too many people and I was literally having problems finding things to do unless you wanted to play golf. Not my thing. I wanted to love Hilton Head, but not so much on this van life travel vlog day.
I've loved most of South Carolina so this was really a bummer!

★ My Story
Hi, I'm Amber and in May 2017 I started full time RV living. I started this nomadic journey after selling my house and all my belongings to pursue this crazy dream of traveling full time in an RV and creating incredible memories.
After 1 year of traveling, I sold my 26 foot Winnebago Class C RV for a more nimble Class B van on a Promaster 2500 chassis. Now in my 4th year of RVing in my camper van, I'm still loving this RV lifestyle and being a digital nomad. I almost always boondock in nature and really enjoy that off grid living.

I’m from HH/Bluffton (since 1979) and I have to respectively disagree. Bluffton also has plantations that do not allow RVs. She was trying to get into Sea Pines, not parking at Coligny or Burke’s beach or Folly Field, or....

I’m so disappointed that my home was a fail for you Amber! I wish I knew you were here! You could’ve parked your van at my house & had my car for the day. I have an Islander Beach Park Pass so you could’ve went to the beach there which usually only has a few people. Sea Pines Plantation doesn’t allow RVs anymore because RVers would stealth camp once they got inside. Security got tired of making them leave so they just banned RVs all together. The other plantations would’ve let you in. You do only see shops & golf courses from the main road but the true beauty of HH is inside the plantations where you see the big oak trees, palm trees, water & beaches. We don’t have many historical sites but do have a few. Ft Mitchell, Baynard Ruins, a historic lighthouse, Ft Howell, Mitchelville Freedom Park which you would’ve loved & my favorite Honey Horn Plantation. Coastal Discovery Museum is there which tells the history of HH. Would’ve been a great place to hike. They have a beautiful butterfly house. You can go on the docks & watch people crabbing or throwing cast nets. Sea Pines Forest Preserve is beautiful so I hate you didn’t get to go hiking there. They have a beautiful wild flower meadow, ponds, picnic tables & plenty of alligators. Audubon Newhall Preserve is outside SP & would’ve been plenty of hiking. Pickney Island Wildlife Refuge is a great place to hike or ride your bike. My niece & I used to take our bikes there. It is so quiet & peaceful. Dolphin Head is my favorite place on the island. It truly is heaven on earth. I was so excited to see your HH video but it wasn’t what I expected. lol Now that I educated you on all the wonderful things on HH that you didn’t get to do, you’ll have to come back one day & give us a second chance!

Sandra! Yes and this! My dad moved there in 1979 and I lived there most of my adult life. My family and best friends are there. My Revel will be there every month. I absolutely love and adore HH. erin oneill me too! I wish Amber would’ve had a better time! I see Revels, Travatos & other vans all over the island so there are plenty of vanlifers here. I even saw somebody parked at my job one night. I walked over & told security not to bother them.

I don’t think they assume dumping, they presume RV’s on driveways for months. That is not all of HH, it is simply a gated community that is run by property owners. Many places to go there that are non-gated and welcoming. It will be the place me and my Revel are seen the most, as it is ‘home’

@TheFlyhi1213
@TheFlyhi1213 3 жыл бұрын
@@judit1783 I appreciate the question and will try and help, with the full disclaimer that I do not have my Revel yet and have only lived/visited there without a class B. With that being said, there are many plantations there (gated communities) with their own rules and regulations, just like anywhere else. And they may simply not allow RVs (there are two VERY nice RV parks on the island, on the water). I was very discouraged to hear Amber wasn't allowed into Sea Pines with her van.. I will have to do more research on this, but I saw my first custom sprinter RV and class B, both parked in Sea Pines. I LOVE going into Sea Pines, even 40 years after the first time. I'm guessing if a visitors pass was obtained as a walk-up to the Sea Pines pass pick up place, instead of the drive through security gate, and pass put on van windshield, it would not be an issue once going through the security gate. Also, there is a parking lot right outside of SP and you can actually walk through the gate and catch a free trolley that will take you all over the plantation. You can also bike through the gate, and there are SO MANY fabulous trails throughout. But, there are also great spots all throughout HH. To describe here is difficult, but my advice is to ask for a local hangout, go there, and just start asking around. The locals truly love their island and want to help - we realize tourism drives the island's economy. Another really easy option is to park van in close by shopping center, and uber into said plantation and enjoy all that it has to offer. Sounds cumbersome, but it's really not. Also, there are plenty of spots to go that are not in plantations and public. Thanks again and cheers!

I’ve lived in Bluffton for 8 years. Before you come to HHI visitors should know that roadside large signs (no Golden Arches) are banned. That makes for a more natural setting but hard to find places. My understanding is HHI is a planned development. Some guy divided the whole island into 5 plantations (they are moving away from using that term but it is still around.) All are private in various forms. Sea Pines is the largest, most expensive to buy a home in but has a fee if you are just visiting. We have taken out of town guests to the lighthouse at Harbortown for a pretty walk around. HHI is crowded especially spring break, RBC golf tourney, weekends. We only go to restaurants mid-week. We like the beaches Autumn thru Spring but after May forget it. This is not meant to be a tourist commercial but if you are thinking of coming, be informed.

Gosh, this video made me sad! HHI is my true love. I could have directed you to some amazing historical areas there, in non-gated areas. Sea Pines resort is very exclusive and it’s a shame they exclude vans w hookups. Btw, I watched the sundial in Shelter Cove being erected when I was a kid! And that awesome park is owned by the Town of HHI. They have bought up so much land to keep it preserved. I went there every day during Covid with Mugsy. Still so sad you did not get to enjoy the island’s beauty - a lot of non-touristy stuff to appreciate. Btw, your vids are perfect and no need to be epic.

If you go back to Hilton Head visit Mitchellville, the first self governed town by freed slaves, established during Civil War times, visit Fish Haul beach, a beautiful quiet place, examine one of the ancient shell rings left by the Indigenous Native American populations 400 years ago; visit the Discovery Museum and the grounds at Honey Horn to take a beautiful walk and learn about the local vegetation and if you go Tuesday mornings you will happen upon the local farmers market. There is so much beauty and history throughout the Island + much of it free and accessible to anyone. You just need to know where to look. I am sorry you missed the best Hilton Head has to offer.

Just wanted to comment on the resort not letting you in. From what I understand, some resorts don't allow RV's and larger vans on the property. It normally has to do with past RV's dumping their tanks at the resort or treating the property like a campground or the parking lots. It sucks that your van falls under the RV umbrella for things like this but I have seen people just park somewhere else and take a cheap Uber ride over.

Private resorts can make just about any rule they want. Forbidding vehicles with hookups might be to prevent people from pulling out lawn chairs, grills, awnings; dumping grey water in parking lots, etc. Otherwise resort would have to patrol, enforce and perhaps have confrontations. Sorry day was not great but loved the Neptune sun dial! I have researched and tried many approaches to healthy eating and weight. For me I think fasting, keto, and others are pretty gimmicky and no based on solid, peer-reviewed research. My own investigation has led me to now rely on Mediterranean foods minus dairy (I am lactose intolerant). I eat mostly organic especially the Dirty Dozen. Only grassfed humanely raised animal and fish proteins and local when I can get it. Never farm raised. Pretty much zero processed foods including “healthy” choices that when you read the labels aren’t good for you. The levels of sodium alone are staggering.. Rare takeouts because often loaded with sodium and who knows what else. I’m now less than 10 pounds to normal weight having lost 18 pounds after 18 months. I have also walked outside daily-for enjoyment not exercise!-in my neighborhood for 411 days straight. I can attest to weight loss being all about what you eat and not miles covered in your walking shoes. I have not any weight due to walking although have gone down a pant size due to increased fitness. And don’t forget being outside walking leads into only to improved physical fitness but also mental and soulful. I do walk briskly leaving beloved dog at home (he gets his own two shorter slower walks a day). You’re doing great! Just keep going. Do trust me there is no silver bullet and the best thing is to eat the very healthiest as food and keep getting outside!

Did you try to park at Coligny, the public beach? Plus there are several other public access points along 278 where anyone can park and go on the beach. As far as Sea Pines, if you park outside of there in a public area such as Harris Teeter and walk over to the gate, then catch an Uber to get to Harbortown. Totally do-able. Just need to do some homework. Or have a friend in Sea Pines who can pick you up and/or get you a gate pass or bike in.

I put a removable basket on a radrunner, it has a bad plate and you attach it first. Then the basket attaches to that. Then with a push of button the basket is off. It helps keep wires from flying around also without chaffing. The base I just put a few tie wraps on for extra support. You just have to take a picture and look for the cheaper bike products. I painted it from white to black to match the bike better.

Hilton Head was my favorite beach vacation ever and it's a shame you never made it there. The boardwalks over the marsh brought the wildlife up close all day, but especially early in the morning. I took over 1,000 pictures when I was there. Our resort even had an alligator in one of it's ponds.

Aw, girl! You're a REAL person with an awesome energy! You wouldn't like the vibe at Hilton Head. Hilton Head is an overblown, snobbish, over-rated site. The Carolinas has beautiful scenery, but real people are truly where it's at. That's why I follow you! :) If you want a REAL and extremely tasty Lobster Roll, the ONLY place to get one is in MAINE. I know you've done Maine previously, but not with a Native Mainiac. LOL Anyway, if you go to Red's Eats on Water Street in Wiscasset Maine, you will have a lobster roll to brag about ;) Keep on keepin' on! I love your videos!

The well off went into Hilton head.. property taxes rose so high , families that had been there for years were forced to sell because they couldn’t afford property taxes. Many of families had been there for over a century but were forced out. Many started off as share croppers. Always had bad taste for Hilton Head just knowing what they did to average Americans. Sad the government allowed it to happen. You cant go in unless you are wealthy.

The problem with blind lobster rolls certain places just basically take some Lobster throw it in too much mayonnaise and stick it in a hot dog roll. Everyone is used to eating lobster hot with butter and they figure it's going to be the same kind of experience but you got to season it properly. Not swimming in mayonnaise

I looked online to see what was so great. Doesn't look a lot different than any other tourist trap. You can find a ton of these up the East Coast. Complete with strip malls with those fake wood look signs. What a bunch of malarkey. I read the water is very muddy, probably from over use. Go to Maine. Start at Kittery and go along 1 and 1A and sea the coast in its mostly natural state. And Lobster? There was a guy on the way into Booth Bay that sold the lobster he caught for really good prices. He steams them right there. September is best for sweet lobster. And don't fall for those on tv lobster rolls shacks, twice the price and half the lobster! Anytime you have lines going down the road a mile, you know your not going to get the best service or quality. Unless its breakfast, then its probably worth the wait.

I write everything down that I eat and give it a calorie count. I am not on a diet, I do this for portion control. I eat very healthy but with a slow metabolism, watching portions is the key for me for weight control. Eating out makes it harder to control weight as I usually eat more and foods I don’t eat at home. Also you don’t really know how it is prepared and the extra fats and oils they use add up.

The Sea Pines Resort is over 8 square miles so I wonder if they actually do own Harbour Town. Anyway, looking at their website and reading a little about them, they are obviously a place that only wants to cater to the rich, so if you don't look or act rich enough, they probably don't want you there.

As a long time resident, and not independently wealthy, I have to disagree. The Town of HH has taken great strides to make it what it is. For instance, it was the first place the Red Roof Inn was not allowed a red roof. It is a naturally beautiful place and Sea Pines is a privately run, so they make the rules. It’s like trying to take an RV into a resort in Jupiter, FL. Anyway, it’s my ‘home’ and we all were just working stiffs living in the lowcountry.
