Today we analyze a skeptic's case against the Bible's inspiration. The article we are examining is from the web site patheos.com and is called "Six and A Half Reasons Why The Bible Is Not Divinely Inspired". We'll look at each of these reasons, one at a time, and thoughtfully examine the case against the inspiration of the Bible. I find that skeptics attacks on the Bible are sometimes thrown out there without much self-reflection and I hope that carefully thinking through these objections will reveal that they are unsound. My greatest hope is that a skeptic will watch this video and find that they have been rejecting the Bible for unsound reasons. Your comments are welcome.

It is the difference between reading scripture with or without the Holy Spirit. As an atheist, I read the Bible just to pick it apart and wave how nonsensical it all is in the faces of Christians. Fast forward to now and I am a Christian. The same book is all new and makes great sense.

Same thing happened to me. The Holy Spirit opens up and guides us through the scriptures. Luke 24:45 explains this very clearly. We all must be born again John 3:5-8 in order to find freedom and true peace in this world. After we are born again John 20:20-22, we are complete in and by Christ; not perfect, but complete.

Jesus Christ Saves...I agree, brother. I don't necessarily need it for myself, although it is very edifying as you said, but I study apologetics because I have children that are entering High School and soon, college. I want to expose them to the assault that will come on their faith, and show them there are answers to the attacks. I don't think the enemy is using topics like evolution to attack as much, because science is really not on their side, and so they are focusing all of their guns on the Bible and the Character of God. I think they know that this is how they get people to doubt and walk away from the faith. it goes something like this: Call into question God's character (is God all loving and good? if so why did he kill the Canaanites, etc...he must be a murderer), and use examples like that to diminish God's goodness and His standing as the standard for morality, and then attack the Word of God to prove that God is not all knowing, therefore just another made up deity and/or prove that the Bible is not the Word of God, therefore all this stuff about sin, needing a savior, Jesus dying on the Cross is just a made up story, therefore you should abandon the myths and treat them like Greek Mythology. All of this is to call into question Christ, and get you to abandon your faith in Him. And this tactic works really well, to lead the uninformed astray, unfortunately. Bless you, man.
@JoshDub78

These same people are using this tactic in the exact same manner to kill patriotism in America. Call into question the character of the founders, then attack anything they wrote as illegitimate because they are not men of good character. Therefore, the Constitution is not legitimate, so we need to replace the whole system with something else. It's no coincidence that the communists/leftists who are working to destroy America are the same atheists working to destroy God, specifically the Biblical God. If you can get people to believe there is no God, and we are all just animals, it gives them license to treat us like cattle. Just like they do in all communist countries. Steal your hope and faith, kill your spirit, and reduce you to only caring about your physical survival. That way you will do anything to acquire basic needs like food, clothing and shelter, including giving up your liberty and submitting to the state power. Communism is pure evil, Satanic even. It's no surprise to find out they are the ones who kicked and screamed to get God out of the public sight in America, while at the same time using the exact same tactic to de-legitimize our current Constitutional system. Same people, using the same tactic on both. They also use this tactic to attack fathers and the family unit. Not comparing the founders to God of course, but just exposing the people who do it to prove that it's just a tactic being used by the same group...Leftists with an agenda.

To Point #1: If the Bible had all info on a given subject in one book/chapter, that section could be corrupted or lost over time and all that teaching would be lost, altered or diminished. Instead, teachings are distributed throughout so as to prevent having a teaching lost through an attack on a single book or chapter. Pretty smart of God to do that!

Hi, Mike. I hope you read this-I have been enjoying your videos. You missed an obvious response to the claim that "Every single action of God in the Bible... took place inside that little circle." 51:15 The Bible mentions by name places from Spain (Romans 15) to India (Esther 1 and 8) to Ethiopia (mentioned 38 times). And several whole books of the Bible were written from Rome or Greece. But I think the verses that apply best to all the atheist quibbles are Isaiah 55 : 9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." and Matthew 11 : 25 "...thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes." The quote from Isaiah shows that the thoughts of God are in a higher dimension than ours. It is not through our own wisdom, but only through God's gracious revelation to us, that we can even begin understand them. The passage from Matthew (and several similar verses) make the point that it is not the purpose of God's word to satisfy the idle curiosity of mockers. God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Atheists make themselves the judge of God, and think that God is somehow obligated to prove his existence to them. It is not God's purpose to convince everyone, but to reveal himself to the humble. If the atheist does not understand this, it is a not a bug-it is a feature.

I’m a nerd and I love to study, learn, read, explore. The Bible is massively interwoven and it speaks to me in new ways all the time but from a personal level. The Bible is delicately persevered and yet speaks to everyone who receives it with an open heart and mind. I have a doctorate but no book I’ve ever read has the amazing truth, impact, influence that is in the word. I benefit every time I spend time with God in His word! Thank you Mike. @@PortmanRd No. Actually, it's organized quite nicely. It starts with Genesis and then the other 4 books of Moses, than Joshua, then Judges and Ruth. Then Samuel and Kings. Chronicles comes next and then Ezra and Nehemiah. Obviously, you could argue about the placement of Job and Esther (Job coming from the Patriarchal era and Esther being from before Ezra and Nehemiah.) Then it transitions over to poetry books (and Job does fit in nicely with Proverbs and Ecclesiates), and then prophets. So the OT is organized in a way that follows the story. The NT gives us the Gospels, and then Acts and the epistles and then the letters with names of people and finally Revelations. Perhaps you're like Matt, wanting it to be a guide book for life, neatly organized by subject. Well that's not what the Bible's for. It's telling a story, and for example, Kings and Chronicles cover similar ground, but remember it's written at different times. They weren't sitting next to each other, making sure that they were covering different topics. It's the Jews who put the OT into the Tanakh, aand then the Church putting the NT books together with the Tanakh. The very fact that the Bible is as connected as it is is truly awe inspiring, and I have no idea what book you've been looking at, because the Bible has so many connections and tie-ins. It's telling the true story of God's kingdom, God's covenant, and Jesus. It's not a 'Follow these rules and your life will be 100% better' book. It's a book telling you what's wrong, what God's people were told to do and what they did, what God told His people about how He would fix it, how He's fixing it, our response and finally, how it's all going to end.

Actually, for a big part of my life, I'd pick it up at times and give it a go only to find it all too hard. Then, after prayer teachers like yourself started appearing in my life. Now, 8 years on it has become so much clearer and makes sense of life and our human condition. I just regret that it took me so long. I'm so grateful for your teaching of the greatest book on earth, for yesterday, today and tomorrow. The texts speak to me now, I can read the same verse over and over and get a new or different insight each time. This is embarrassing. God didn’t just sit down one day and decide to write the Bible. The Bible was written over thousands of years by different people, through different perspectives, showing different times and the progress and regression of humanity. Without such a vast array of perspectives, details, history, poetry, etc. we would not be able to comprehend The Bible in such a nuanced way, universally and for all time. The Bible sometimes tells, but a lot of the time it shows what cannot be simply told through (true) stories, including Jesus’s parables.

God made human beings to exercise their emotional capacity in loving each other. But He obviously expects us to recognize Him as the Creator and also have love and reverence for Him. Which is fair,no? He is not preparing us for a cosmic purpose or so that we feed His power or whatever! He is in control of His creation including the satan's actions. Our test is to love each other properly in our assigned bodies and refusing to harm others no matter how much their words or actions pain you emotionally. Mental disturbances are emotional disturbances and are the reasons for murder, assaults and any evil you could think of. That emotional fragility is your test and not accumulation of wealth and accomplishments. It is self-sacrificial love even when it doesn't benefit you or even when it actually harms you. That is the narrow path that leads you to God the Christ. People who go to hell are never confused as to why they are there- indifference towards others or outright hostility. God wants you to care for others even when they are trying to harm you.

One of my favorite things about wiki's are the citations, and their warnings and explanations of when there are a lack of them. I'd like to come back to pages and see their bibliography grow, links figured out, and those warnings slowly diminish whenever there are more(hopefully correct) answers. It's not only helpful to realize but honest, and gathering true knowledge should have that experience! Feels a little like reading a book and being in the middle of watching it finished, and learning from it. :)

On the topic of atheist lists of contradictions, simply hold them to the same standard. Find one contradiction you can refute and then dismiss the entire list as untrustworthy. Their response will be, "Well, that's just one example and I don't pretend that it's infallible." While all of that is true, they still subscribe to their beliefs based on their sources (replacement for Scripture) being superior (in trustworthiness, quality of information, etc.) which is what you need to point out before, again, simply dismissing the rest of their list. One of the most useful things in debating things like this is merely to hold the atheist ("hashtag science") to his own standards and the supposed superiority of his position. Don't get caught up in their games. It's essential to remember that 99% of the time, they're not looking for a win, they're looking to score points and any potential loss of a point just leads to them shifting the goalposts. For example, when I was young, the "hashtag science" atheists of my time were all about geography and archaeology noting that there simply weren't the locations of the Bible to be found were they claimed to be and in the few cases they were, there was no supporting archaeological evidence. The issue was these supposed experts didn't understand the names had changed over time and in fact, once located, the archaeological evidence was compelling. Did they admit their errors? Did they use the new enlightenment of evidence for the Bible to adjust their methodology when studying the Bible (moving from pure skepticism to one of reasonable trust?)? Nope. They just shifted the goalposts. That's why you don't here those arguments any more. There is no intent on their behalf to deal honestly and this is one of Mike's fatal flaws, regularly treating as though they are dealing honestly. Scripture tells us they are not and we should not treat them as though they are. We can still be decent to them but there is near zero reason to belief that they are engaging honestly.

Psalm 113:130 "“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” KJV. I had the privilege of knowing a simpleton who was indeed a Christian. She asked me if we would know if one of our loved ones did not get to enter God's Kingdom. I did not have the answer. She went on to explain her belief that it would be as if we had never known them. She never mentioned Matthew 25. But, out of the mouth of Babes in Christ, she repeated what is written in Matthew 25 almost verbatim. I always remember this verse whenever someone not as schooled gives a very simplistic answer. I do not elaborate on their answer thereby disrupting their level of understanding. God Bless

A great majority of young people get their information online these days, and the internet is a grand and often undifferentiated blend of hearsay, factual information, entertainment memes, echo-chamber social self-congratulation, and targeted propaganda. Whenever I hear about someone saying of the Bible: 'Well, no, I've never read the whole thing but I've heard enough to know what's in there.' I also wonder WHO has been telling them what they've heard-did it come from other young people, from conservative Bible scholars, from Marxists/atheists who have an axe to grind against the Bible and who say ANYTHING about it in order to gain advantage, from liberal Bible scholars (e.g., Bart Ehrman) or other popularizers of German Higher Critical-derived venom, etc.? Probably just as bad, WHO doesn't read something-completely-for themselves first in order to at least BEGIN a valid assessment of it?

I think you’re on the right track. With people who are very obstinate the best thing you can do in my opinion is to get them to think, not be argumentative and to pray for them. To be specific, I would ask them 1 or both of these questions; 1. IF there were irrefutable evidence for God (don’t get into specifics), would you believe? 2 Make sure to say this with a genuine sense of curiosity, “Do you hope you’re wrong?” Just remember, all you can do is present The Gospel with love and kindness and pray for them. If you do that then you’ve done your job and God is pleased. God bless you and your family

And the answer to your question is yes: mathematics, operator instruction manuals, service manuals, legal contracts, legal rulings, science textbooks, scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals, and anything else that is considered to be too important to be open to more than one interpretation.

1:00:00 he totally misses the real ending. Basicly saying this is what it was like in the time of the judges, when everyone did what was right in their own eyes instead of listening to God. Like this is the end result when people groups turn from God. Which had been proven time and time again as we saw with germany in ww2. They rejected God in favor of evolution and eugenics. The end waz the devaluation of human lives and violence. Honestly I've found this happens a lot. It's always been a heart issue in my experience. Not a heart that wants to know the Truth. A heart set to hate God and his people presumptuously, so he's going to totally make stuff up. Idk if someone died choose to him or he was hurt by hypocrites that claimed to follow Jesus, bit something like that is usually behind someone willing to go to such illogical lengths to fight "christianity" and the good God of Abraham. He's suppressing the Truth in unrighteousness, and unless he's totally reprobated i believe he knows that's what he's doing. Whether he believes it's not True anyway so it doesn't matter if he does so, I'm not sure. Hearts that aren't set to finding Truth aren't gonna see the Truth. They'll continue to suppress and reject the things of God in pride. From what I've seen in my limited experience. The first step to believing is always humbling ourself. Its sad. It's such a little thing and yet the pride of life traps so many in a snare.

The Bible is perfect. How can anybody say it's 'a mess?' It starts out with Creation in the first chapter, and ends with the last millennium, the last 1000 years out of a total of 7000 years, telling us what to expect during that last period of time before everything finally enters into an eternity of bliss, everyone having been tested and found either worthy or failing their test. There won't be any souls in eternity who have not been tested thoroughly to find out who the Meek are who will inherit the Earth. Then we have God's people, some who knew Jesus personally, and giving an account of His life and teachings. LIke the 4 gospels, written by 4 witnesses, yet all agreeing. Then we have epistles of Paul to the churches. Paul was an amazing person who started out as an enemy, unbeliever, but when he converted and repented there was no one who worked harder or sacrificed more than Paul to start the churches and minister to the believers. The Old Testament has prophets and accounts of the lives of God's people. Knowing these details is so helpful to me. I read about Joseph, and figure if he could endure all that he did that I can put up with some persecution myself, and not to be amazed or shocked that it's happening. The Bible tells us everything we need to know about our own lives, where we are headed and what God expects from us, and details on the lives of other believers, where they succeeded and failed. This is real life truth, written by real people who we know about historically. They existed, and the Bible is written by real people, yet it fits all together because God was inspiring them to write. It's not like the Bible was written by one man who stuck his head in his hat and dictated a lot of nonsense (ie Joseph Smith). It was written over a period of 1500 years, and it has a coherence that shows God was inspiring all of it. I would not want to change one word of the Bible. I don't claim to know and understand every word of it, but it is so rich that I don't think any person can do that. That is more proof that it's God's book. That's another thing -- it's God's book, and ultimately it's a book about God, so that we can read it and understand who our Creator God/Savior God is. It's not a book about Solomon or David or Peter or Paul in the end. Or Mary. All these people are incidental to God's Book that God wrote to us, so we can know God and know who He is and what He wants from us. Anybody who thinks the Bible is 'a mess' -- is not interested in God, knowing God, or pleasing God, and looking for excuses to write God and God's Book off. There is nothing more important than knowing God, and we should be thanking God every day for our Bible. Many people don't own one, can't get one, and people in the 6000 years before us did not have a Bible as we do. Thank God for my Bible. I can't imagine my life without it. If the Christians were working harder to provide people the world over with a Bible in their own language, I don't think we'd be on the brink of WWIII as we are now.

I don’t see why anyone think that God should have inspired people to write about quantum mechanics in the Bible. The Bible is written to teach is about God, about His love for us and for us to know how to get saved. Why should he have wasted people’s time to teach them about science? We can learn science on our own, but we can only get to know God through Jesus Christ.

To the transgender question. I would say feeling yourself, or identifying yourself to be a different gender from your biological gender isn't a sin. Having an attraction to someone of your same gender isn't a sin. Sin comes into play based on how we act regarding those feelings. It's not a sin to have a serial killer mentality, but committing murders in a response to that mentality is. The important thing is how we act and our thoughts. Thinking about having sex with the same gender is different from simply having an attraction to a person of the same gender. The former is a sin, the latter is not. Of course, if you think about it, thoughts are actions and feelings are not. Thinking is an act, it's making decisions. Feelings are not actions, but can be acted upon, even if that action is just thinking about a physical act that we don't end up choosing to do.

Identifying yourself as a different gender than what God created you is a sin because God said He created them male and female. He created them, not you, and not our personal feelings. It’s literally stomping all over the image of God to say that. And yes, continuing to desire the same sex and not giving that up to Jesus is a sin whether you act on it or not. We are supposed to hold our thoughts captive, and we are no longer slaves to sinful depraved minds.

It’s conspicuous that so many atheist and skeptic apologists were either “former” Biblical theists or raised in that environment, which seems to indicate that their activism is driven by some personal animus and not by any evidence or rational thought. They had some bad experience in church or their religious home and now they have some axe to grind. Rarely will one encounter an atheist or skeptic who was raised in a home indifferent to religion and then grow up to be an activist skeptic.

As a former atheist myself, the arguments against Christianity are ignorant at best. I missed out on having a relationship with God because I was influenced by secular culture that paints religion as a brain washing cult for the dumb. I never even had read the Bible or understood that there was a cohesive storyline in it until exploring Christianity for myself out of desperate need. God always calls us back to Him. That being said, this reminds me of recently a date I went on and the guy was a self-proclaimed capital-letters atheist. I let him ramble on and on to see what he was getting at and what his thought process was. He saw the sadness overtake my expression as I realized how lost and broken he was. He was going on and on about how at 6 years old he went to church with his mother who raised him as a Christian, and he just thought the whole thing was dumb and made up and he felt he could see right through the whole charade. So he says he could've written the Bible himself, that it was written by some very dark people in order to control others. I'm ashamed to say I once thought religion was used to control others as well - it is in the case of cults and such - anyhow, this guy thought he was so brilliant that he could've written the Bible himself and he is so much smarter than everyone that he just feels sorry for people who believe it and that it's pathetic, but that if I was his wife he would tolerate my going to church if that's what I need. Needless to say I never saw him again.

Mike, thank you for this video. Please correct me if I'm wrong but as Christians we are filled and inspired by the Holy Spirit, we understand the Bible as we read and grow in spiritual maturity, therefore an atheist could not possibly understand fully the teachings or the inspiration behind those teachings? My personal experience confirms this theory, when I first started to read the Bible as an interested but unsaved person, I could not really fully understand the Scriptures, however, with perseverance came enlightenment which in turn strengthened my conviction in the truth, my understanding of any previous perceived contradictions were made clear, an atheist could never grasp this concept unless they were willing to explore this as a possibility, quit being stiff necked and maybe soften their hearts a little and allow themselves to consider this, I have gradually come to see the Bible is consistent, speaks for itself when we allow it to and reveals it's intellect and beauty as the Holy Spirit works within me, it's such a shame the atheist misses out on this experience! We need to pay for them, if they want to mock and scoff at what I say, fine, we get used to it!

The second is the instructions to bathe and wash hands, with running water, several times throughout the OT. It didn't give reasons for it, it was just expected. It was one of the reasons the Jews had a much lower infection rate during the black plague.
