I have found that gluing aluminum flashing to 1/4" thick wood material, makes an excellent shield; it's dirt cheap and can be cut with wood working tools.

Now, my wife keeps asking me if I have seen her bread board! Thanks for posting. Lots of good advice there. Regen receiver project is on the "to do" list - assuming my wife doesn't find out where I stashed the bread board.

That breadboard was contaminated and it needed to be replaced :)

I love your broadcast band radio builds, both crystal and the simple regens. This looks like another great one. Any chance you could delve into that little beauty you showed at the end of this vid ?? Possibly a view inside and maybe schematics and such ? For the most part that's how I build my projects, in nice little wood enclosures, even most of my crystal builds !! Great stuff, keep it coming 😁😁

I've built several Hartley's and Colpitts types. It will be nice to tick off the Armstrong as a low voltage example! I think I'll go with a metal open box type chassis with the point to point wiring accessible from the bottom and tubes mounted on top with the tuning cap remoted to the metal faceplate and volume and Reaction controls mounted in the side of the chassis, sliding the shafts through the faceplate holes! I'll shield a power section for a 24VAC transformer, rectified and filtered from mains power. I might go with a tube output transformer to a small speaker. I did manage to find surplus 12AV6 for $5.90 ea and 365 pF single section 350v Air Caps for $17. Feels like I'm getting ready to build a Heathkit!

If you don''t have any aluminium for the front panel, you can use a sheet of single-sided copper-clad board.. The copper side should face backwards, and you can cut away the copper around the hole for the 'phone jack, to prevent a short. Nice project. 4X4LF

Solid core #18 bell wire is cheap, available at every hardware store in 25 or 50 foot coils, and works well for old school breadboard construction. Insulation isn't the most tolerant of less than ideal soldering technique though.

Hi Mike, great little build series. I have a question about some of the cap values on the schematic. Caps C2 , C4 , C5 , & C8 all have just a number value. Can I assume those are all pF or is that incorrect ??
@MIKROWAVE1
@MIKROWAVE1 2 жыл бұрын
Generally yes; no suffix means pF. so a cap that says 100 is 100 pF . A resistor that says 560, is 560 Ohms. etc..

Preferred Regen..Capacitor throttle or potentiometer? Previous regen. built in the late 50s used two 954 acorn valves. OV1 style. The plates of the 954s were ..no connection ... but the screen grids were used as anodes. Any idea what was behind that? 2nd question.Have you ever seen valve bases for acorn tubes these days? 73 de G3NBY. (Former Colonial Oppressor. No taxation without Representation.) PS Thank you for suggestions about the lumpy, vernier reduction drive.

Greetings from Downunder. I have a question. Could reflexing be achieved by coupling the output of V2 through a capacitor to the grid of V1?
@MIKROWAVE1
@MIKROWAVE1 2 жыл бұрын
Reflexing is a wicked game that really brings some fun into any project like this. The trick is bypassing and keeping the two (or more) frequency ranges separated- Audio, IF, RF, BFO, Oscillator etc..

TELEFUNKEN GMBH Space Charge Vacuum tubes are most likely still available, has anyone purchased 8 or 9 KORG 6P1 vacuum tubes and built a radio with them i.e a flat vacuum tube, three of these flat tubes can be configured to operate exactly like the SO42P with a B+ OF 50V and a heater voltage of 3V and you can take half an Integrated Circuit socket for tube sockets.

I have some 12AV6's in my eBay cart waiting for me to click on "Buy." Still waiting to see how this turns out and for you to post a schematic. Remember, you said that this is supposed to be a beginner's project. But so far, it kind of feels like a project that allows you to show off your knowledge to beginners. I hope this comes together somehow so that I can build it for myself. It would be very helpful if somewhere along the line you would post the final schematic and BOM, please. Probably would have worked better if you had done that up front.
@MIKROWAVE1
@MIKROWAVE1 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the final schematic will come when the unit is finally working - ha. A lot of folks apparently like the dual triodes like the 12AU7. Well sure - but I wanted the freedom to go 12V or 24V and try both voltages and compare results. So maybe two 12AU7's and you get an extra pair for more amplification or buffering.

@@MIKROWAVE1 What about using two KORG NUTUBE 6P1 units and using one as the front end and one as the output stage, the heater will require 1.5-3V and the B+ 9-18V and you can use a 24 pin IC socket.

Hi. I am going to make this project. Can I use an stereo phone jack connected in left and right terminals and leave unused the ground part? Or may be a problem with it. And... What about to use 12v of the car for filaments and 2 9v batterys in series with 12v to supply the plates. Is ok to use 30 v? Thanks to share your experience. My best wishes from Mataderos, C.A.B.A., Argentina.

A good trick that will eliminate the shoulder washer! You would use tip and Ring and not the grounded sleeve. The results with more voltage would be more audio volume.

So I don't know which is the right title to somebody like you who has a. Big knowledgement in a tech cuestion. Something like thanks you genius or thanks you professor. Something unformal but respecfull. Ok, now "I leave the poncho" like we say in Argentina when one end a very long speech in an amateur conversation. I suspect already that triodes with less GM (gain) are better candidates than the 12AV6. All of the 12AT6 tubes that I have tried work at lower voltage. I suspect that the 6C4 and 12AU7 will be excellent choices. We will find out soon.

No joke.....I have quite a few older parts, coils, sockets, 1,2,and 3 gang var. caps.....need to do something with them....they guy's family dumpstered many parts, but I got the rest....and some radios as well.....one works, and the other was an IC-7700 w/bad finals......$900 later, I have a $6K radio.....and a butt-load of extra parts (IC's, transistors, caps , resistors, coils, cabinets).....a junk box dream....

@@cooker4409 for ham band Regens where you are doing CW and SSB, you normally only use 1 365 pf section as the band set, in concert with a band spread variable of say 25 to 60 pF that is the actual main tuning. To do 80 and 160 maybe 2 sections to hit both bands in one sweep, but again the band spread is the actual tuning.
