Becky Salan even though you probably won't see this... Republicans and Democrats, at the time the book was written, were not the same Repubs/ Dems as we know them today....Hobbs and Cedric lean more towards what a contemporary audience would recognize as Democrats. Note their distaste for the rich snobby Earls, etc. So the film producers WERE counting on the ignorance of the audience and adjusted to represent the authors intention.
